Server 2012 windows updates fail

Windows Server 2012R2 Updates failing with error 800F0922

This has been happening to all of my Windows Server 2012R2 Servers for a month or so now. It seems that the Monthly Security and Quality Rollups are the offenders, but sometimes others fail as well. The servers are VMware 6.0 VMs and normally updates are managed by Kace K1000. For the purposes of troubleshooting this issue however I have Kace updates disabled.

No matter what way I try to install the updates, manually by downloading them from MS or through Windows Update the updates install, prompt me for reboot, and then the OS rolls them back when it boots back up. It then tries the update again and begins its cycle of failure all over. All in all the failure cycle takes about 30-40 minutes; it’s been extraordinarily frustrating.

So here’s what I’ve tried.

I’ve spent more or less the whole week working on this and have gotten nowhere. The 800F0922 error code is supposedly related to secure boot being erroneously enabled in UEFI but these are VMs built with a BIOS firmware. I’ve checked the UEFI on the VMware host machine because I thought maybe it was a setting coming from the hypervisor level, but secureboot is not enabled there either.

I’ve done the normal windows update troubleshooting tricks, rebuilt the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory, tried with all services disabled in a clean boot environment, reregistered dlls, run sfc /scannow (no errors were found), run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, I also got creative and tried installing the BitLocker feature to see if that was of any help.

All in all nothing I have done has gotten me anywhere. I’m in exactly the same spot I was in when I began looking into this. I haven’t even been able to positively identify the issue as a Windows one or a VMware one.

If anyone has run into this before or has any advice I’d be extraordinarily grateful.

I have finished doing the following fixes and still I get the same error message.

I have run and or check and fixed the following:

Time and date are fine.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

The Operation completed successfully.

Ran the WindowsUpdateDiagnostics.diagcab utility several times with reboots. It says it fixed 3 issues and I still the same error.

In the Windows Updates – “Choose your Windows Update settings, I have tried several different options with or without the boxes checked. No luck.

Firewall is turned off and ports 80 and 443 are open.

Antivirus Vipre has been stopped and disabled.

Ran MalwareBytes and no errors were detected; also Windows Defender is not installed.

This is a DC in our production environment, so I cannot reinstall the O/S at this time or do some type of restore.

Can you try thi fix

I’ve been having a similar problem recently within the last month with Windows Updates. My problem was related to our proxy server. I had to set WinHTTP to use the proxy. To do this, open a command prompt as an administrator. Type «netsh winhttp show proxy». This will show your current proxy settings. In my case, it was set to direct access (no proxy server), which has always worked but for some reason decided to quit working recently on a few servers. I then type in «netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie» which will import the proxy settings from IE and use them for winhttp. I then was able to run Windows Updates. At the end, I changed this back by typing «netsh winhttp reset proxy» which resets it back to direct access. This setting has caused me other «weird» issues such as the exchange management shell not opening, so I only turn it on to do windows updates and then disable it after.

By the way, if you open C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log, you will find a lot of useful information which will be «live» while you are running it. You just need to close and reopen to refresh it and scroll to the bottom for the most recent information. This can help troubleshoot.

One last thing worth checking which has also bit me a few times is to check the date/time in the BIOS. I’ve had it set to a different country and it was 12+ hours off even though within Windows the date/time was correct. Once I corrected it and had them in sync, I was able to run Windows Updates.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, but we do not use proxy servers. Also the time/date time zone is correct.

And I have deleted those directories around 4 times now. Always get the same error.

OK, now I deleted the windowupdate.log file and the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ directory and ran Windows Update to get a fresh log file. So here is the end of that new log file with errors messages

Question

I have set up a virtual network with two virtual machines. The first VM is Server 2008 R2 and is set up as a domain controller. The second VM is Server 2012 R2, and has been joined to the domain. The DC (TestVM1) is also set up as a DNS server. From TestVM2 (Server 2012 R2), I am able to log in using a domain login, and I am able to browse to a public website.

I was able to run Windows Updates from TestVM1, but when I attempt to run Windows Updates from TestVM2, it fails.

The Windows Update client shows «Error(s) found:» and «Code 8024402F».

Errors in WindowsUpdate.log include

In most cases, the above errors are caused by small interruptions in communications between the computer to be updated and the update to be downloaded. These issues usually resolve themselves. Before you try the troubleshooting the error codes, try one or both of the following.

Exit Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then restart Windows Update to check for updates.
Turn on Windows Automatic Update so that updates are installed automatically every 24 hours.

If that fails, please try the following :

1. Click on Start, and then click Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type «net stop wuauserv» without the quotes at the command prompt, and press
Enter.
4. Delete (or put in recycle bin) the contents of
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (but not the SoftwareDistribution folder)

5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
6. Now try Windows Update again.

Tried to run Windows update and it failed again in the same manner. (Log showed it had also failed at about 4:30 AM EST)

Stopped the service, deleted the files, started the service, ran Windows Update, got the same failure.

Again tried steps Mekh suggested. No joy.

Have you configured anything on the TESTVM2?

The error code 0x8024402F usually occurs when there is connection issues with the Internet.

Verify you are connected to internet.
Make sure that Windows Firewall is turned on.
Disable all third-party firewalls [if any] temporarily.

I can open IE on TESTVM2 and connect to the internet.
Windows Firewall is turned on.
There are no 3rd party firewalls.

I have done very little to the VM since installing it.

1) I added Process Explorer
2) I added some shortcuts (Command Prompt, Notepad, Process Explorer) to the desktop

Windows Update continues to fail. Last attempt was at 5:46 PM EDT.

I would recommend you to spin up another testvm and join it to the DC and check if you can run the updates.

If the updates go through, you can delete the TESTVM2.

Just spun up another VM. Used image «a699494373c04fc0bc8f2bb1389d6106__Windows-Server-2012-R2-201409.01-en.us-127GB.vhd» (as I did previously). Verified that I can connect to a web site on the internet with IE.

This time tried to run Windows Update before joining the VM to the local domain. No joy.

WU succeeded in getting a cab file from:

The web server fe2 is running a local cert for the web site.

Tried stopping wuauserv, deleting the contents of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution and restarting wuauserv. Still no joy.

I created a Testvm using the same image and the updates are going through. So, I am trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at this issue.

Could you please let me know the VM size and the region?

I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time. Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed that as a test and got the same error message. I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up. No joy as well. My logs are below:

Derek Desktop Engineer

I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time. Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed that as a test and got the same error message. I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up. No joy as well. This is a VM server running on ESXi 5.1. Server 2008 servers dont seem to have an issue. Server 2012 server don’t seem to have an issue. Only this new Server 2012 R2 server. My logs are below:
