How to Change Mouse Sensitivity on Windows 10

The mouse is a key peripheral that is used for input since the rise of computers. But a lot of users have been unhappy by the default mouse speed on Windows 10. Since preferences vary a lot from person to person, some users feel that their cursor is moving to fast while others feel that the default speed could be faster. Sure, some high-end external mouses have their proprietary software capable of adjusting the mouse sensitivity, but there are a few native ways that will enable you to do it from Windows 10.

Windows 10 is equipped to let you customize your mouse sensitivity in a variety of ways. Besides changing the mouse speed and its related settings, you can also adjust the number of lines that will be scrolled with each mouse wheel movement.

If you are not satisfied with the sensitivity of your mouse in Windows 10, we have prepared a collection of methods that will enable you to customize the mouse speed to your personal preference. Please follow whichever method seems more approachable in your particular situation. If you find that one method is not applicable, simply move down to the next one until you manage to resolve the issue.

Method 1: Change the Mouse Sensitivity via the DPI Button

If you want to avoid doing any tweaking inside the Windows menus or the registry editor, your best choice is to use the DPI button located on your mouse. Although not are mouses will have one, most peripherals of this type will include a DPI button that will allow you to switch to different sensitivity settings.

Here’s a quick guide on how you can modify the mouse sensitivity on Windows 10 via Control Panel:

1. Press Windows key + R to open up a Run box. Then, type “control” and hit Enter to open Control Panel. Open Control Panel
2. Inside Control Panel, click on Hardware and Sound, then click on Mouse (under Devices and Printers.
3. In Mouse Properties, you can select the Buttons tab to change the button configuration and increase or decrease the double-click speed. Mouse Properties
4. If you want to adjust the sensitivity, select the Pointer Options tab and use the slider under Motion to adjust how fast your mouse pointer is. You can also check the box associated with Enhance pointer precision to make it more snappy. Adjust Pointer Options

Method 3: Changing the mouse sensitivity via Registry Editor

A more technical way of modifying the mouse sensitivity settings is via Registry Editor. This will require you to get a little technical and is potentially dangerous, but if you follow the instructions correctly you won’t run any risk of damaging your registry files.

This method will allow you to make some correlated registry changes in the speed settings to increase your mouse sensitivity to maximum. Keep in mind that raising the value beyond the ones specified below might end up slowing your mouse rather than making it faster.

Here’s a quick guide on using Registry Editor to modify the mouse sensitivity settings:

1. Press Windows key + R to open up a new Run box. Then, type “Regedit“, hit Enter and click on Yes at the UAC (User Account Control) prompt to open Registry Editor with administrative privileges. Open Regedit
2. Inside Registry Editor, go to the ribbon at the top and choose File > Export, then select an appropriate location in which to save the registry backup. This step is done to ensure that we have the means to restore the registry to its previous state in case something goes wrong. Export File

Note: In the unfortunate event that your registry does get damaged during this process, go to File > Import and choose the backup that you previously created to restore to a healthy state.

Using the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate to the following location:

Move over to the right pane and double-click on MouseSpeed and set it’s Value data to 2 and click Ok to save the changes. Change MouseSpeed Registry Value to 2

Next, double-click on MouseThreshold1 and set it’s Value data to 0 and hit OK to save. Set Registry Value of MouseThreshold1 to Zero

Finally, double-click on MouseThreshold2 and set it’s Value data to 0 and hit OK to save the changes.

After completing the steps above, your mouse sensitivity is set to the maximum. Close Registry Editor and reboot your computer to force the changes to take effect.

Change mouse settings

You can customize your mouse in a variety of ways in Windows. For instance, you can swap the functions of your mouse buttons, make the mouse pointer more visible, and alter the scroll speed of the mouse wheel.

Open Mouse Properties by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type mouse, and then click Mouse.

Click the Buttons tab, and then do any of the following:

To swap the functions of the right and left mouse buttons, under Button configuration, select the Switch primary and secondary buttons check box.

To change how quickly you must click the buttons to perform a double-click, under Double-click speed, move the Speed slider toward Slow or Fast.

To turn on ClickLock, which enables you to highlight or drag items without holding down the mouse button, under ClickLock, select the Turn on ClickLock check box.

Open Mouse Properties by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type mouse, and then click Mouse.

Click the Pointers tab, and then do one of the following:

To give all of your pointers a new look, click the Scheme drop-down list, and then click a new mouse pointer scheme.

To change an individual pointer, under Customize, click the pointer you want to change in the list, click Browse, click the pointer you want to use, and then click Open.

Open Mouse Properties by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type mouse, and then click Mouse.

Click the Pointer Options tab, and then do any of the following:

To change the speed at which the mouse pointer moves, under Motion, move the Select a pointer speed slider toward Slow or Fast.

To make the pointer work more accurately when you’re moving the mouse slowly, under Motion, select the Enhance pointer precision check box.

To speed up the process of selecting a choice when a dialog box appears, under Snap To, select the Automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box check box. (Not all programs support this setting. In some programs, you’ll need to move the mouse pointer to the button you want to click.)

To make the pointer easier to find when you move it, under Visibility, select the Display pointer trails check box, and then move the slider toward Short or Long to decrease or increase the length of the pointer trail.

To ensure that the pointer doesn’t block your view of the text you’re typing, under Visibility, select the Hide pointer while typing check box.

To find a misplaced pointer by pressing the Ctrl key, under Visibility, select the Show location of pointer when I press the Ctrl key check box.

Open Mouse Properties by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type mouse, and then click Mouse.

Click the Wheel tab, and then do one of the following:

To set the number of lines the screen will scroll for each notch of mouse wheel movement, under Vertical Scrolling, select The following number of lines at a time, and then enter the number of lines you want to scroll in the box.

To scroll an entire screen of text for each notch of the mouse wheel, under Vertical Scrolling, select One screen at a time.

If your mouse has a wheel that supports horizontal scrolling, under Horizontal Scrolling, in the Tilt the wheel to scroll the following number of characters at a time box, enter the number of characters you want to scroll horizontally when you tilt the wheel to the left or right.

Переход в свойства мыши

Чтобы настроить все вышеуказанные параметры, для начала следует перейти в окошко свойств мыши. Разберемся, как это сделать.

Для тех пользователей, которые не привыкли перемещаться по дебрям «Панели управления», есть и более простой метод перехода в окошко свойств мышки. Кликните «Пуск». В поле поиска вбейте слово:

Регулировка чувствительности указателя

Прежде всего выясним, как выполнить регулировку чувствительности указателя, то есть, настроим скорость движения курсора относительно перемещения мышки по столу. Именно этот параметр в первую очередь интересует большинство пользователей, которых волнует вопрос, поднятый в данной статье.

Переместитесь во вкладку «Параметры указателя».

В открывшемся разделе свойств в блоке настроек «Перемещение» находится ползунок под названием «Задайте скорость движения указателя». Путем его перетягивания вправо можно увеличить скорость передвижения курсора в зависимости от перемещения мыши по столу. Перетягивание этого ползунка влево, наоборот, замедлит скорость движения курсора. Отрегулируйте скорость так, чтобы вам было удобно пользоваться координатным устройством. После выполнения необходимых настроек не забывайте нажимать кнопку «OK».

Регулировка чувствительности колесика

Можно также отрегулировать чувствительность колесика.

Для выполнения манипуляций по настройке соответствующего элемента переместитесь во вкладку свойств, которая так и называется «Колесико».

В открывшемся разделе имеется два блока параметров, которые называются «Вертикальная прокрутка» и «Горизонтальная прокрутка». В блоке «Вертикальная прокрутка» путем переключения радиокнопки имеется возможность указать, что именно последует за поворотом колесика на один щелчок: прокрутка страницы вертикально на один экран или на указанное количество строк. Во втором случае под параметром можно указать число прокручиваемых строк, просто вбив цифры с клавиатуры. По умолчанию это три строки. Тут также экспериментируйте, чтобы указать оптимальное для себя числовое значение.

В блоке «Горизонтальная прокрутка» все ещё проще. Тут в поле можно ввести количество знаков горизонтальной прокрутки при наклоне колесика в сторону. По умолчанию это три знака.

После выполнения настроек в этом разделе кликайте «Применить».

Регулировка чувствительности кнопок

Наконец, взглянем, как регулируется чувствительность кнопок мышки.

Переместитесь во вкладку «Кнопки мыши».

Тут нас интересует блок параметров «Скорость выполнения двойного щелчка». В нем путем перетягивания ползунка устанавливается временной интервал между щелчками по кнопке для того, чтобы он засчитался, как двойной.

Если вы перетяните ползунок вправо, то для того, чтобы щелчок рассматривался системой как двойной, вам придется сократить интервал между нажатиями кнопки. При перетягивании ползунка влево, наоборот, можно интервал между нажатиями увеличить и двойной щелчок при этом все равно будет засчитан.

Для того чтобы посмотреть, как реагирует система на вашу скорость выполнения двойного щелчка при определенном положении ползунка, кликните дважды по иконке в виде папки справа от ползунка.

Если папка открылась, то это значит, что система засчитала два нажатия выполненных вами, как двойной щелчок. Если каталог остался в закрытом положении, то вам либо стоит уменьшить интервал между нажатиями, либо перетянуть ползунок влево. Второй вариант действий является более предпочтительным.

После того, как вы подобрали оптимальное для себя положение ползунка, жмите «Применить» и «OK».

Как видим, настроить чувствительность различных элементов мышки не так уж сложно. Операции по регулировке указателя, колесика и кнопок осуществляются в окне её свойств. При этом главным критерием настройки является подбор параметров для взаимодействия с координатным устройством конкретного пользователя для максимально комфортной работы.
