Customize SharePoint from Mac OS
Create and edit SharePoint files form Windows is simple with SharePoint Designer but if you are a Mac user, you are in though spot!
You can do pretty much everything from the browser but upload a file every time you want to change CSS is a tedious process.
In this article, I’ll explain how you can save time and how you can get access to all the files and folders needed to customize SharePoint sites from your Mac.
This article only covers SharePoint on premises unfortunately SharePoint Online is not accessible with this tricks.
Option 1 – Map SharePoint as a network driver
This option uses the WebDAV protocol that provides a framework for users to create, change and move documents on a server, typically a web server or web share.
- From finder click on Go Connect a Server
- Type the address to your SharePoint site including the protocol
- Type your credentials and wait, this may take a few minutes
- Once it’s mapped it will open Finder and will show all the files as a network folder
As an alternative you can map only the library where you want to work. (e.g. Style Library)
How to edit the files?
To modify the files first, you need to check them out, since this option is not available in Finder you will need to it through the browser.
Note: Visual Studio Code used in the steps bellow is optional you can use any other IDE.
- On your browser navigate to the library where you have the branding files (e.g. http://sharepoint.com/Style%20Library/Forms/AllItems.aspx)
- Check out all the files you will be modifying
- Open Visual Studio Code
- Go to File Open
- Select your SharePoint shared driver
- Select the library where the files are located and click Open
- In the explorer pane select the file you want to modify; it might take a few seconds to sync the file
- Save your file and keep in mind that you will need to wait a few seconds
- Go to the browser, check in and publish your files as major version to make them visible to all the users
Bellow you have my SharePoint with a red page title customized on Mac.
Option 2 – Microsoft Document Connection
This option is only for users still using Office 2011, if you have already upgraded to 2016 this software is no longer available.
To open SharePoint sites your Office version cannot be Home or Education, on this versions the SharePoint option will be grayed out.
- Open Microsoft Document Connection
- Click on Add Location and select Connect to a SharePoint Site
- Fill the address and credentials fields
By default, this software does not display all libraries, if you want a library that is not listed you will need to provide the address to it in the address field
Once the library opens you will have the option to Edit, Check Out and Check in the files
The edit option opens the local software defined for the file type
Conclusions
Option 2 is faster than Option 1 and does not require you to go to the browser to check in and check out the files but it uses a software that is 5 years old and was discontinued.
On the other hand, if you are editing multiple files at the same time Option 1 allows you to see the tree view, Option 2 requires you open all the files individually.
With Option 1 you will add the infamous DS_Store files to the libraries and Windows users will be able to see them.
None of the options is perfect but at least they provide a solution to customize your SharePoint site from your Mac.
Unfortunately, SharePoint Online is not supported but you can keep an eye on this thread seems that Microsoft have plans to support it with the one drive app.

ARCHIVED: How can I use SharePoint on OS X?
The SharePoint on-premises service is being replaced by SharePoint Online, available since July 2016. For more, see ARCHIVED: About the SharePoint retirement.
- If you are a SharePoint site owner whose site has been disabled, you can visit SharePoint Standard Farm Migration to request an extension/re-enable. SharePoint will be permanently disabled no later than June 2, 2017; most sites should have migrated to SharePoint Online by March 31, 2017. Sites scheduled to be disabled on March 31 were disabled on April 3, 2017.
- ARCHIVED: SharePoint My Sites were permanently retired on April 3, 2017.
Web browser support
Safari
Safari is the only browser that Microsoft officially supports for use with SharePoint on OS X clients, and offers the best experience. For limitations on Microsoft’s support of SharePoint with Safari, see Plan browser support (SharePoint Server 2010). The Silverlight plug-in is required for advanced user interface controls.
Normally, Kerberos or NTLMv2 authentication is required to access SharePoint at IU. Safari supports both Kerberos and NTLMv2 with no additional configuration required. If Kerberos is available, it will be used; if it is not, NTLMv2 will be used.
Some additional features may not be supported with non-Windows browsers. For instance, Internet Explorer for Windows is the only browser that supports ActiveX, so any ActiveX control will generally not work with OS X browsers.
Other browsers
Chrome and Firefox for OS X are not officially supported by Microsoft for use with SharePoint. However, you can access SharePoint using one of these browsers if you take some additional steps.
Normally, Kerberos or NTLMv2 authentication is required to access SharePoint at IU. Chrome and Firefox for OS X currently support only Kerberos authentication, but by default, this setting is not enabled. To use Chrome or Firefox with SharePoint:
- Authentication using Kerberos
- Obtain a Kerberos ticket-granting ticket (TGT) by doing one of the following:
- Log into ADS with your Network ID username and passphrase to bind your Mac to IU’s Active Directory Service. Once you have logged in, you’ll automatically have a Kerberos TGT.
- Launch Ticket Viewer. For details, see Authenticate against IU’s Kerberos realm in macOS
IU’s Kerberos servers are only accessible to computers that are on the IU network. To use Kerberos authentication from off campus, you must first establish a VPN connection.
Configure your browser.
- Chrome: Be sure Chrome is not running, and then open the Terminal app and enter:
Chrome will now automatically authenticate to SharePoint (as long as you have a Kerberos TGT).
- Firefox
- Open Firefox, and enter about:config in the address bar.
- Dismiss the warning that appears, and double-click network.negotiate-auth.trusted-uris .
- Enter the following:
Firefox will now automatically authenticate to SharePoint (as long as you have a Kerberos TGT).
- Obtain a Kerberos ticket-granting ticket (TGT) by doing one of the following:
- Log into IUanyWare.
- Click the Web & Mail icon, and then click the IU SharePoint icon.
- Enter the URL of your desired SharePoint site.
For more about using IUanyWare, see:
WebDAV support
If you have Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or later, you can use the Finder’s Go > Connect to Server command to connect to SharePoint. In previous versions, you will only have read access to your site; write access is not available.
For the following main WebDAV URLs, replace sitename with the name of your departmental or group site. For personal (My Site) sites, replace username with your IU Network ID username.
- Group site: https://www.sharepoint.iu.edu/sites/sitename
- My Site: https://my.sharepoint.iu.edu/personal/username
Consider these limitations enforced by SharePoint:
- You cannot store files larger than 1 GB.
- Filenames cannot begin or end with a period. Also, the following characters cannot be used in filenames:
Microsoft Document Connection
You can use Microsoft Document Connection (included in Office 2011) to access files on a SharePoint site. This application is similar to SharePoint Workspace 2010 on Windows, and works as a middleman between the SharePoint site and the other Office applications on your Mac.
Using Microsoft Document Connection, you can:
- Read files
- Edit files
- Upload files
- Check files in and out
However, you cannot:
- Create folders
- Drag and drop folders from your local system to a SharePoint site
- Delete files
- Edit file metadata
- Edit live; you must click Refresh to see your changes
When adding a new SharePoint site to Microsoft Document Connection, use the WebDAV URLs listed above for departmental (i.e., group) and personal (My Site) sites.
Microsoft Office 2016
It is possible to open and save documents directly to SharePoint from Office 2016 for Mac OS X. In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint:

We show you how to install Microsoft’s OneDrive and Sharepoint on a Mac, so you can share files with other Mac and Windows users
If you or your company uses Microsoft OneDrive or Microsoft SharePoint for cloud data storage in a Windows PC environment as part of Office 365, it can also be setup to work the same way and access and edit files on a Mac OS device such as an iMac, Mac Mini or Macbook as follows.
There is no such thing as a “SharePoint-App“. SharePoint is basically the Business version of OneDrive but your computer (Windows or Mac) uses the “OneDrive-App” as the program that syncs files between your computer and the Microsoft Cloud.
To setup SharePoint initially, you need at lease one licence of Microsoft Office 365 (Business, Business Essentials, Business Premium, Enterprise E1, E3, E5, SharePoint Plan 1 and 2)
However, to access SharePoint files you only need the “OneDrive App” (available to all Office 365 Personal, Office 365 Home or higher. Office 2011 does not have the OneDrive App and was not built to use OneDrive or SharePoint (even though you may have limited success using)
Your mac should also be using Mac OS X 10.12 (Sierra) or later.
So if not already installed, start by downloading and installing the “OneDrive App”
Firstly open the Onedrive App on the Mac (if already installed) or install it by either of the following methods:
- Download the app from the Microsoft Site https://products.office.com/en-us/onedrive/download
- or from the Apple App Store by clicking on the App Store icon
and searching for “Onedrive”
A comprehensive guide is also available from Microsoft at the following address
Once Onedrive is installed, you can then login to your companies Sharepoint or your personal Onedrive account and “sync” your files to your Mac using the OneDrive App
How to Sync SharePoint Files to a Mac
Login to your Microsoft Account using a web browser, there are a number of ways such as:
or directly to the company Sharepoint site such as
https://your-sharepoint-name.sharepoint.com
And open OneDrive or SharePoint in your web browser
choose OneDrive or Sharepoint using a browser and depending on which files you wish to sync
Syncing OneDrive Files
Syncing SharePoint Files
Once in OneDrive or Sharepoint click on the “sync” icon
This should force the “OneDrive” app to open on your Mac (SharePoint uses the OneDrive App)
Select the files or folders you wish to sync.
On the top taskbar of your Mac, you should see the Onedrive icon start to become animated as the the files start to sync, depending on the number of files, these may take some time to download
To access the files that have been synced, right click the “Onedrive” icon, and select the Onedrive or Sharepoint folder you wish to access
Other available options here can be found under “Preferences”
You can choose to have a “local” copy of OneDrive or Sharepoint files on your computer or choose to leave them in the-cloud and open them “on-demand” if you are running the latest Mac OS (Mac OS 10.14 or newer). This feature is not available on older Mac OS versions.
You are not restricted to only having data from OneDrive or SharePoint. You can have both and/or multiple accounts for different users (see below) to add a new account click on the “Add an Account” button
The “Office” tab, allows All Office Applications to sync files and you can choose to automatically “merge” conflicts or keep copies of both files and manually work out the changes. Be careful choosing “Always keep both copies” in a situation where there are multiple team members modifying files simultaneously, as you could find yourself with multiple copies of every file.
A recent development on Mac OS, is that if you also run Windows on your Mac using Parallels with OneDrive running, hitting the “Sync” button will force the Sharepoint sync to the Windows version and not the Mac version.
What should I use OneDrive or SharePoint. What is the difference?
Beware of “Sync-Problems”
It is not guaranteed that all files will immediately sync, especially if you are “uploading” files to SharePoint or OneDrive from your local drive
You may see a warning such as this
Clicking on the “X” opens another window that highlights the problems with the syncing. Clicking on the magnifier symbol takes you to the file or folder and allows you to correct them.
Common OneDrive/SharePoint Sync problems include:
“Names or Folders containing characters that are not allowed” such as:
- Blank leading Characters
- Blank Trailing Characters
