Ubuntu
http://www.shrew.net/download/ike
- checkinstall: sudo apt-get install checkinstall
- cmake: sudo apt-get install cmake
- libedit: sudo apt-get install libedit-dev
- libssl-dev: sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
- qt4: sudo apt-get install libqt4-core libqt4-dev libqt4-gui

@stramaz —> «Unable to build ike» seems a problem with ike package, not shrew itself. Anyway, I checked and ike builds fine for me. Can you report in https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ike/ ?

Hi @figue, thank you for your answer. I use Checkpoint on my mac to connect to this corporate network I was talking about, so I guess I need this client as well. I’ll try to build it tonight.

Anyone knows how to adopt my current shrew-vpn-client config to vpnc since I’m getting the same error as @v_mk when trying to build even ike manually?
chrishamm commented on 2019-03-20 19:26
Agreed, vpnc is what I’ve been using and it works well. No idea if it supports smartcards though
figue commented on 2019-03-20 19:17
Hi @lordchaos. Did you check vpnc? In my case, I need Shrew because of Checkpoint support, but depending on the VPN, probably is better vpnc or any similar clients.
lordchaos commented on 2019-03-20 15:35
The company I work for offers VPN access for Linux clients with the shrew client. However, I’m kinda hesitant to use it though as it seems the application has not had any update since many years. Is there a different VPN client that might support the same functionality? By the way, it needs to have support for smartcards.
figue commented on 2018-11-07 00:43
I’m still using this everyday, so I adopt it. Thanks.
chrishamm commented on 2018-11-06 17:28
Feel free to adopt this package, I don’t use it any more.

Using OpenVPN client on Ubuntu 18.04 works as well:
- File: client.ovpn
- File: user-pass.txt
- Command: sudo openvpn —config client.ovpn —auth-user-pass user-pass.txt
Full details below:
Downloaded the file client.ovpn following this [1] page. Select third option after Windows and Mac to download this file.
Created a plain text file called user-pass.txt which contains username in first line and password on second line.
This works from CLI now.
Install the Shrew VPN client [1] on Ubuntu (tested with Ubuntu 18.04) :
Obtain your VPN config from the archive, and import it using the GUI interface:
Verify that the configuration has been imported as a new site as below:
Now we can connect to the VPN:
IMPORTANT: In case your network interface has a MTU greater than 1380, then you will observe issues with your VPN connection. Setting correct MTU of your machine’s network as described below, will fix this issue.
