How to shut down after updating Windows
Hello. A few weeks ago, there were updates available for my computer, as I discovered when I was about to it down. In the menu, the option to shut down was replaced by «Update and shut down», and the one to restart was «Update and restart». I found it completely great. «At last, they understood that people don’t want to stand in front of their PC while it updates to turn it down, because they just want to sleep!»
But that was the only time I saw that option. Today, here is what I see in the menu.

(Note: Yes, this version of Windows is in French. But since I’m comfortable with English, know support is more easily available in English and have had a bad experience with Microsoft’s French customer support, here I am.)
So, to begin with, let me translate. The options you see are Sleep, Shut down and Update and restart.
No Update and turn off. Why? And how do I turn my computer off after installing updates? I mean, I know that to install them properly, Windows needs to be stopped, and then the installation needs to be done before Windows is fully running. But there just has to be a way to make it shut down for real once that’s done, right?
I mean, after so many years of Windows, Microsoft just has to have noticed that people do -not- want to wait in front of their computer to update it. They want it to update on its own when they go to sleep, and be fully done with it — and not still running, geez! — when they wake up.
Even if this isn’t an option of Windows — which would be questionable and sad — I know it can’t be impossible. If FileZilla and WinRAR can shut my computer down after an operation, Windows sure can. On top, it seems it WAS possible to shut down and update just a few weeks ago.
So even if it’s not in the options anywhere, I’d like you, if it’s within your power, to:
1. relay this to the developers so they consider adding this most basic and user-friendly function;
2. most importantly, teach me how I can tell my computer to shut itself down after a Windows update.
Thanks in advance!
PS: This question just popped through my mind. How do automatic updates in the Windows Store work? I’m pretty sure I told it to automatically install updates yet this week, my computer was turned on and off several times, but I had to open the Store to update the apps it was telling me were not up to date.

Exactly.
As it stands right now, you can schedule a restart, but if your computer is already turned off, then nothing happens. So there is effectively no way to install updates at a time that doesn’t impact usage.
If I try to install the updates before I leave work at night, I have to wait for them to install and then either interrupt the power on (as described above), or wait who knows how long and then shut it back down after the updates have finished installing.
I don’t want to have to leave my computer running all night whenever there’s a Windows update, or be forced to sit by it and wait patiently so that I can turn it off after the updates have applied. Especially considering there’s no way of knowing in advance how long a particular round of updates will take to apply.
What’s the point of scheduling installs for times when you’re not likely to use your computer if you have to set alarm with yourself to make sure the PC is on (and not sleeping) at the appropriate time for the update? That makes no sense at all.

I just did an update and now my tablet (8.1) shuts down after a few seconds.
I attached my keyboard but can’t get it to stay up long enough to do anything.

I can’t do either of those because the tablet shuts down before I can type anything. I can’t get a command prompt.
Is there a way I can boot to the command prompt?

Thank you but I found that this Samsung Tablet could boot to Troubleshoot by holding down Volume+ while pressing power.
I did a system restore to the time before this latest update and I am back running.
But now I don’t think I should install any updates or the same thing will happen.
Do you have any advice?

I have stopped doing any updates because I am afraid I will return to this shut down problem.
I was hoping there was a report that others had this problem and someone found out why and fixed it.
I can’t go through this again and won’t update until I know the problem is solved.

I am using Samsung SmartPC XE-500T1C Windows 8.1.
I managed to solve my problem from info gathered from different sites.
1. Restart into safe mode. At login page Windows 8.1, press shift+ Restart. This took me to Diagnostic Screen.
2. Select [Troubleshoot] option.
3. Under Troubleshoot select [Advance Options].
4. Under Advance options select last item [Startup Settings]. Description says «Change Windows startup behavior».
5. Under [Startup Settings] select [Safe Mode]
6. Once in Safe Mode, go to Device Manager.
7. Look for device Intel Dynamic Platform And Thermal Framework Manager. Uninstall all items under this device. Select delete driver where prompted.

Power down computer.
Wait 10 minutes.
Setup will automatically restore your previous Windows 10 build or previous version of Windows.
Launch command prompt with administrator privileges.
Press Windows key + X
Click Command Prompt (Admin)
Type the following command:
rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN
Hit Enter on your keyboard
Exit command prompt
- Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
- Restart a few times and try again.
- Disable General USB Devices (example — Smart Card Reader).
- If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumdrive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.
- Do a clean boot and try again.
- If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both and attempt setup again.
- If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi and proceed with the installation.
- If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
- If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account
- If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

Laptop shuts down after Windows 10 update
Since updating Windows last week, my laptop will consistently shut down a couple minutes after being turned on.
The screen goes black and then the power and hard drive activity light turn off, which suggests it has shut down but when I power it back on all programs are still open.
This happened with the April update as well but I was able to ‘fix’ the problem by reverting to a previous version, however this time it won’t revert.
I have checked for new drivers and I am up to date.
Also it’s completely fine in safe mode.
My laptop is a Medion Akoya P6647 (MD 99062)

One other option is you can try rolling back to the previous build. I would recommend reset Windows 10 keeping your files and apps . . .
To do this
1. Start your PC as Windows attempts to load and the spinning dots appear, press and hold Power Button for 5 — 10 seconds. This is known as a Hard Shut Down
(Do this twice )
2. Turn on your computer for the 3rd time and it should come up in the Recovery Environment
3. You will be prompted for System Repair/Safe Mode/Command Prompt
4. Go to Troubleshoot — Advanced Option — Revert to previous build of Windows
5. If this is unsuccessful, go to Troubleshoot — Advanced Options — Reset this PC
Choose to keep your files and apps,
