Compatibility with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard

If you are using Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, please ensure you are running Mac OS X 10.5.1 or later before you download and install the Sound Set Editor.

Step 1: Download the Adobe AIR runtime

The Sibelius Sound Set Editor now uses Adobe’s AIR technology.

Step 2: Download the Sibelius Sound Set Editor

Click below to download the Sibelius Sound Set Editor. The same file is required for Windows and Mac.

Step 3: Install the Sibelius Sound Set Editor

• If necessary, double-click the sse.air.zip archive to extract the sse.air file.
• Double-click the sse.air file to start the installation
• This application is not currently signed, so you will be warned about the publisher of the application not being verified; click Install
• You are prompted to choose an installation location and whether you want a shortcut on your desktop; adjust these settings as you like, then click Continue.
• You are told that installation has completed; click Finish.
• If you chose to run the Sound Set Editor immediately after installing it, it will now launch.

Templates

The following templates are available to help get you started with creating your soundsets. Download one of these and use File > Open in the Sound Set Editor. If you complete a sound set, please email it back to us so that other people can also use it.

NOTE: These templates include all the program names and program numbers for the device.
If the device has a General MIDI bank we have filled in the sound IDs but other than that the sound IDs need to be added to the Programs tab of the sound set in the Sound Set Editor. Before putting in the sound ID for each pitched instrument, you will need to change the Type from Drum map to Sound.

In the Drum maps tab the drum kit patches are listed but you will need to define the Name, Sound ID and Pitch for each sound in each drum kit. We have filled in one pitch as an example although it may not be exactly correct and is purely to show the type of information which needs entering.

Our testing of various Sibelius products on Apple’s latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, has yielded the following results.

Sibelius 7

Sibelius 7 is fully supported on Mac OS X 10.7.

Sibelius 6

If you are running Sibelius 6, you should ensure you are running Sibelius 6.2 for the best experience: chose Help > Check For Updates to make sure you’re up-to-date.

To register Sibelius 6 on Mac OS X 10.7, you must choose the Register using a web browser on this or another computer radio button on the first page of the Register Sibelius dialog. If you try to register online, i.e. using the radio button that is chosen by default when Register Sibelius opens, as soon as you click Next you will be told that there is a problem contacting Sibelius on the Internet. Don’t panic: you can simply go ahead and register via your web browser instead.

Sibelius 5

If you are running Sibelius 5, you will need to update to Sibelius 5.4, otherwise you will experience a crash when showing the Mixer window.

If you encounter an error message that your serial number is corrupted, see here for the solution.

To register Sibelius 5 on Mac OS X 10.7, you must choose the Register by phone, fax or email radio button on the first page of the Register Sibelius dialog. Sibelius 5 is not officially supported on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, just as it is not officially supported on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. However, aside from the above issues, you should find that it runs without significant problems.

Sibelius 4 and earlier

Because Lion no longer supports Rosetta, which allowed PowerPC applications to run on Macs with Intel processors, versions of Sibelius prior to Sibelius 5 can no longer run at all on Mac OS X 10.7. Sibelius 5 was the first Universal Binary version of Sibelius, i.e. the first designed to run on both PowerPC and Intel processors.

Sibelius First and Sibelius Student

Sibelius 5 Student or later and Sibelius First should all run on Lion without any particular problems, except for the issue concerning online registration (see information for Sibelius 5 and Sibelius 6 above).

Scorch

Scorch runs correctly in Firefox 5, provided you set it to run in 32-bit mode. Scorch does not run in Safari (version 5.1 or later), Google Chrome or Opera on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

PhotoScore and AudioScore

PhotoScore 6 and AudioScore 6 and earlier are not supported on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, and will prompt the user for the Product ID every time they are launched.

This same problem happens in v7.0 of both PhotoScore and AudioScore but has since been fixed in PhotoScore (v7.0.2) and AudioScore (v7.0.1), which are both compatible with Lion.

Auralia and Musition

Auralia 4 and Musition 4 run on Mac OS X 10.7 with no known incompatibilities. Earlier versions of Auralia are PowerPC-only applications and cannot run on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion at all.

G7 is a PowerPC-only application and cannot run on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion at all.

Groovy Music series

Groovy Music Shapes and Groovy Music Jungle are PowerPC-only applications and cannot run on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion at all.

Groovy Music City 1.4 is a Universal application and runs on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, though it is not officially supported on Lion.

Sibelius Instruments, Sibelius Starclass, Sibelius Compass

These products are all PowerPC-only applications and cannot run on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion at all.

The GPO4 and JABB3 sound sets listed below are updated versions of the sound sets included with Sibelius 6.2. If you are not yet running Sibelius 6.2, download and install the update before using these sound sets.

To install a sound set:

• Download the sound set you want, and extract the archive.
• One or more XML files (e.g. Garritan JABB 3.xml) will be extracted.
• Copy the XML file or files to the following folders:
  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 6\Sounds
  • Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 6\Sounds
  • Mac OS X: /Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software/Sibelius 6/Sounds

(You may have to create the Sounds folder yourself.)

Sibelius Sound Set Editor

The Sibelius Sound Set Editor is a free application for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.4 or later that allows you to create sound sets for Sibelius 5 or later.

Note that downloading a sound set does not make these sounds available to you. Trying to use a sound set for a device or sample library that you do not own will produce incorrect playback and other error messages.

Installing a sound set

To install a sound set:

• Download the sound set you want, and extract the archive.
• One or more XML files (e.g. Sibelius Essentials.xml) will be extracted.
• Copy the XML file or files to the following folders:
  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 5\Sounds
  • Windows Vista: C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 5\Sounds
  • Mac OS X: /Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software/Sibelius 5/Sounds

(You may have to create the Sibelius 5 and Sounds folders yourself.)

Sibelius 7 is fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Sibelius 6 on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

The latest versions of Sibelius 6, Sibelius 6 Student and Sibelius 6 First are fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. To check that you are running the most up-to-date version of Sibelius 6, choose Help > Check For Updates from within Sibelius. Alternatively, you can click here to download the update »

This update is recommended for all Sibelius 6 users, even if you are running Mac OS X 10.5 or earlier, or Windows.

Important notice about hardware compatibility

Sibelius relies on third party device drivers for many aspects of operation, including screen display, MIDI and audio playback, printing, scanning, and so on. If you intend to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6, please be sure that your existing hardware is fully supported on Mac OS X 10.6 before you install the upgrade.

If you currently use an Avid (formerly Digidesign) audio interface (e.g. Mbox 2 series, Digi 002/003 series) or M-Audio audio interface (e.g. ProFire 610, Audiophile Solo/Firewire, etc.), PCI sound card (e.g. Audiophile series), or MIDI controller keyboard (e.g. Axiom or Axiom Pro series, Oxygen series, KeyRig series etc.), please check compatibility information on the M-Audio and Avid sites before you install Mac OS X 10.6.

Previous versions of Sibelius on Mac OS X 10.6

Versions of Sibelius prior to Sibelius 6 are not officially supported on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Sibelius 6 users should update to Sibelius 6.2.

Users of Sibelius 5 and earlier, and of Sibelius 5 First and Sibelius 5 Student or Sibelius 3 Student, should note that these versions of Sibelius are not officially supported on Mac OS X 10.6. Our technical support staff will not be able to provide detailed help with running older versions of Sibelius on Mac OS X 10.6.

Provided you follow the important information below, you can run Sibelius 5 and earlier without serious problems on Mac OS X 10.6:

Sibelius 5.2.5, Sibelius 5 Student and Sibelius 5 First:

Sibelius 4:

• Sibelius 4 users must install the Leopard Compatibility Update from www.sibelius.com/a545 to run Sibelius 4 on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
• Note that Sibelius 4 is not a Universal Binary and will also require Rosetta to be installed: you may be prompted to install Rosetta the first time you run Sibelius 4.

Sibelius 3, Sibelius 2 and G7:

Users of Sibelius 3, Sibelius 2 and G7 should be aware that playback through your Mac’s internal sounds (QuickTime Music or the DLS Music Device) is not functional and will produce errors on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Unless you have an external MIDI sound module or synthesizer connected to your computer, you will not be able to hear playback.
