How to Share Your Screen on Skype

Show friends or co-workers what’s on your screen

If you use Skype, you don’t need an expensive conferencing service to show your friends or colleagues something on your screen. The original video-chat service has long supported a screen-sharing feature, provided you launch it from a desktop version of the app.

Instructions in the article apply to Skype on Windows 10, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Skype for Business is also addressed on the platforms where it’s available. Additionally, While Skype is available for web browsers, the Screen Share feature is not.

What to Know About How to Share a Screen on Skype

There’s one common requirement when you want to share your screen. You must be engaged in a voice call with your contact. You don’t need the sound, but it’s useful to explain what’s happening on the screen.

When you’re in a voice call, you can show someone what’s on your screen, though your sharing capabilities vary by platform:

• Windows, macOS, and Linux: One person can share a screen with everyone on the call.
• Android and iOS: You can take still snapshots, but not share the screen.

How to Share Screen on Skype for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Recent versions of Skype have come a long way to make the application consistent across desktop operating systems. When you’re connected to a call, Skype provides a one-click process to share your screen that’s similar across all platforms.

Select the Share screen icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.

If you have more than one monitor or display, select which one you’d like to share. Click Share Screen to start.

Confirm what’s being shared. Skype places a yellow border around the screen.

To stop sharing, either select the Share screen icon again or hang up the call.

How to Share Screen on Skype for Business for Windows and macOS

Skype for Business is Microsoft’s corporate version of Skype. It comes from their previous messenger called Lync. The process to share your screen is similar to the consumer version of Skype, as you need to be in a voice call, but the on-screen controls are slightly different.

In a video call, select the Share Content icon at the bottom of the screen, second from the right.

Select Share your Desktop to share the entire desktop or select Share a Window to share a single window.

Use this menu to stop sharing or end the call.

How to Share Snapshots on Skype for Android and iOS

Mobile devices can’t share live screencasts in calls, but these devices can share screenshots.

Screen sharing is the equivalent of video. If you’re on a mobile network, it uses your data rapidly. Unless you’re only text chatting while using Skype, access a Wi-Fi network to avoid overage charges.

On iOS or Android, tap the Plus when you’re on a call. This tap displays the actions you can take during a call.

Tap Snapshot.

Skype takes a snapshot of your screen and automatically inserts it into the call’s text chat.

You may not notice it with the voice call taking up the full screen, but the chat indicator in the lower-left corner of the screen shows a new message. That’s where you’ll find the picture of your screen.

Others in the call can view or download the screenshot, so be careful what else is on the screen when you capture it.

While you can’t send your screen to other callers, you can receive shared screens on a mobile device. It appears in the center of the screen but might be too small to be useful.

Skype and screen sharing

Last time I decided to use Ubuntu 17.10. When I installed Skype from official site of Skype (I downloaded the .deb package) I can do almost everything without one important feature for me. I can’t share my screen while I am talking with somebody. On Windows that was working perfectly, on Ubuntu I don’t even see such a option.

My friend has the same version of Ubuntu, GNOME and Skype. He can use that feature. I can’t and I can’t figure out why.

If you use Wayland (Ubuntu 17.10) and latest version (v8.11.0.4) of skypeforlinux screen sharing is not working.

In order to have screen sharing working you can switch to Xorg as explained here.

Otherwise you can use Google Hangout, where you can even share windows.

The latest version(s) (v8.x.x.x onwards) of skypeforlinux ( .deb package downloaded from Skype website) has the screen-sharing option (only in an Xorg session, if you’re in a default Wayland session you’ll have to switch to an Xorg session first).

You can access this option by clicking on the + symbol (More Options) at the bottom while making a video call:

This is because ubuntu 17.10 switched from Xorg display server to wayland.(Why wayland). But many applications are yet to port to wayland. many of the existing applications do not work properly with wayland. Skype is also such a case.

To switch from wayland to Xorg (X11). Do the following

• Log out from the current session
• then select Ubuntu on Xorg from the login screen

Make sure you have an X11 Session by executing the following command in terminal.

it should output x11

now your Skype screen sharing will work

How can I share my screen with Skype for Linux 5.3?

How can I share my screen via Skype 5.3? The “+” menu contains only two item: adding another communication participant and changing the audio and video settings. Nothing about screen sharing. Is this feature still not implemented? This would be very bad, as screen sharing is crucial for me, and Skype 4.3 will stop working in 3 days.

Teamviewer is a good screen sharing app IME but has had security issues. AnyDesk is recommended on alternativeto.net.

https://appear.in/ now being replaced by https://whereby.com/ works for me on linux (fedora) in firefox, opera and google-chrome. It includes screen sharing, and in my experience is simpler and more effective than skypeforlinux. It uses peer to peer connections. I can’t comment on security. It’s free for basic use, but more facilities are available to subscribers who pay. I’ve used only the free service, including giving remote lectures with questions from the audience.

How to make Skype conference calls and screen sharing in Linux

Now that Skype got discontinued for Linux and only the 5 beta version is avalable, Linux users have a problem, which is how to communicate with Mac and Windows users. There have been lately a lot of questions regarding the installation of Skype and alternatives for Skype but I think the real problem comes when you

1. Absolutely need to use Skype because everyone else you work with uses Skype
2. Need video for the conference calls with those people
3. Need to share your screen while on the conference call

As far as I know, you can’t do numbers 2 and 3 if you have to follow 1 . That is, there is no way you can natively use Skype to participate on conference calls held from Windows/Mac computers since Skypeforlinux lacks support for conference calls and outgoing screen sharing. (There are even problems for regular video calls!)

My question is, if you absolutely have to use Skype on Linux, is there any way around this?

The only answer I could come up with was Skype+wine, but it doesn’t appear to work. I have spent several hours lately trying to install Skype 7 using wine but the installation fails with «connection problems». Installing Skype 6 also doesn’t work because the link seems to be broken.

Is there any way around this that I’m missing?

As of today version 5.4 Beta is releases which apparently fixes the conference call issue. Although the screen sharing is still not possible.

Seems like skype preview now has all functionalities, making my question obsolete.

How to do screen sharing on Skype ?

Screen sharing on Skype is pretty simple.

To shart sharing oyur screen on skype you will need to create a Microsoft account. To do that go to the https://www.skype.com and then on the top right hand side click on the sign in drop down button and then click on sign up

Click on the Download button on the website. Download the skype and install it. After installing start the Skype app and you will come up with this page click on the Create one button next to No account text? as shown in the figure and you will be on your way to creating an account

You can create an account with your phone number or your email address or you can get an email address from outlook as well if you need one

Skype is available for the following operating systems

You can download the Skype from official Microsoft website here: https://www.skype.com

Apart from screen sharing, you can also do:

1. Skype to Skype Calls
2. Group Video Calls
3. Instant Messaging
4. Call Phone numbers

To screen share you first need to call someone. It can either by a voice call or a video call.

To call some one you need to add them to your address book. You can do this by:

1 either sending them an invitation on their Skype ID. (You need to know the skype id of the person you are inviting). and they need to accept your invitation

2. You can receive an invitation from them on your skype id and you will have to accept it. (you will need to share your skype id with them beforehand).

Note: You can only share your screen with computers, you can view the screen on mobile devices but you cannot share your mobile screen with Skype.

The ability to share your mobile Screen (Android and iOS with others is available with Dead Simple Screen Sharing)

First, you need to start a call or a meeting. It can be either an audio call or a video call. You can do one to one calling or with a number of participants. You can call someone as shown in the figure below:

You can also start group calls if you wish to share your screen with multiple people, you can group call with upto 10 people on skype free plan

To start the group call first select a person then click on the top right-hand side corner button to add more people as shown in the figure below:

Once the call is connected, it will be shown as below:

Then if you are on a Mac or Linux computer, On the top bar click on the Conversations button then click on the Share Screen Button as shown in the figure below:

Alternatively, you can also press the plus button on the Skype window and a popup will come up and there you can click the share screen button. Like this

Both these methods work the same, After you click the Share screen button, a popup will come up stating if you want to share the whole screen or just a tab. as shown in the VideoScreen Share skype below.

As you can see you can either share the whole screen or a window or tab of the screen. After selecting what you wish to share you can click the share button on the bottom right-hand side of the screen and start sharing your screen.

This is how the screen will look to the person you have

shared your screen with.

The whole process that is needed to share the screen on skype is given in the video below.

If you are having multiple monitors you can choose monitor screen to display.

To close the screen sharing session simple click the plus button again and then click on the stop screen sharing button. Alternatively, you can also close the call to stop sharing your screen.

You can use the free version of skype with upto 10 people after that you need to purchase a skype business plan to continue adding members to the meeting.
