I’m having extremely weird SNMP problem on one of our hosted Windows Server 2012 R2. More precisely it’s about SNMP service. Server has SNMP service installed from roles and features and it is working fine locally, but over network it just doesn’t work. Server has QlikView products installed which also use SNMP (some, not all products), but I tried disabling all QlikView services and still couldn’t get SNMP answer over network. Also configured QlikView products to NOT user SNMP. Here are things which I have tested:

— Windows’s SNMP service is OK & running (tested locally with Paessler SNMP tester)

— Confirmed that port 161 is used for Windows’s snmp.exe

— Port 161 is listening (& ofc open)

— Firewall traffic allowed for SNMP agent

— Pretty sure that SNMP packets get through, but server just doesn’t answer to them

— SNMP community OK

Tried asking help from QlikView forum but it seems to me & them that this is not QlikView related problem. Hence why I’m asking help here. I’m all out of new fresh ideas. All help would be greatly appreciated!

The SNMP service uses the default UDP port 162 for SNMP trap messages. The SNMP service sends SNMP trap packets to the SNMP trap host or manager by using UDP port 162.

Please make sure these ports are not being used by another services.

I am having a problem with snmp on windows server 2012 R2, snmp service doesn’t work and we can’t monitor the server performance and its hardware. I try to uninstall and reinstall service snmp on the server but it still doesn’t work. Note that we got this problem on two servers and one server is working back as normal after i reinstall service snmp and another one still can’t solve. Do you have any other solution?

1.Please run sfc /scannow command to scan all protected system files.

2.Please follow the path: C:\Windows\syswow64\snmp.exe and navigate to snmp.exe. Then right click it and select Properties. In Security tab, please check if assign permissions correctly.

In addition, please follow the next path in Registry Editor and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\SNMP\Parameters. Please check permissions of this Parameters folder if configure correctly.

I know I am too late, but had the same question because my vulnerability scanner found some SNMP issues with my printers. However, SNMP is used by Windows to know whether or not the device is powered on, online, idle, printing, and what the print status is.

With that out of the way, I found https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/SNMP/supported-versions.

Windows supports version 1 & 2. I know the link states «desktop,» but since server OS’ are bases off the desktop image, it would be the same.

Windows Server 2012 R2 SNMP Tools install

Recently ran into an issue on Windows Server 2012 R2 systems and came across some systems that had SNMP installed but the Security, Agent, and Traps tabs were missing. This is due to the facet that Microsoft has deprecated SNMP in Server 2012. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831568.aspx)

NOTE: This is in addition to the SNMP Services feature. If you haven’t already installed the SNMP Services you will also need to install these.

To correct the issue just add roles and features under Server Manager -> Manager -> Add Roles and Features:

Installation Type = Role Based or Feature Basked Installation and click Next.
Server Select = The local server you are on. (Note: if you try to do multiples it will fail. See Unattended Install note below.)
Server Roles = Click Next
Feature =Remote Server Administration Tools -> Feature Administration Tools -> SNMP Tools

Click Next and Install.
Go to Services MMC and Restart the SNMP Service.
Close out Services MMC and re-open it. Go to Properties of SNMP and now you will have all the configuration Tabs for SNMP.
