Something went wrong, OOBESETTINGS message during Windows 10 Setup

In some cases, you may receive Something went wrong – OOBESETTINGS message while configuring OOBE settings during the initial Windows 10 set up. In this post, we will provide instructions on what you can do to easily resolve this issue.

When you encounter this issue. you’ll receive the following full error message;

Something went wrong
But you can try again.
OOBESETTINGS

This issue occurs because the specific timing of the OOBE process causes a deadlock situation. This issue does not involve hardware, and you can easily fix it.

When you start a new Windows-based computer for the first time, the Windows Out-Of-Box Experience (OOBE) process guides you through various setup operations. In rare cases, you may encounter one of the following issues during OOBE.

So, if you’re faced with this issue, all you have to do is click on the Try again button at the bottom of the error screen. Usually, this corrects the error and the OOBE wizard can continue to complete the setup .

However, in the case whereby you receive the error again, you have to force a full shut down your system by pressing and holding the power button until the system turns off. When you power on the device again, Windows will simply restart and ask you to configure OOBE settings again as the Windows is already installed – it’s just the OOBE that hasn’t completed yet.

Microsoft is continually improving the resiliency of the Windows Out-Of-Box-Experience through ongoing updates. The chances of these issues occurring should decrease over time as Microsoft identifies and resolves specific timing issues.

Sorry to know that you are facing issues with while upgrading to Windows 10.

Refer to the below methods and check if it helps.

Method 1 : I suggest you to perform the Windows Update troubleshooter and check the Windows Installer services status.

Step 1 : Try to run the Windows update troubleshooter and check if it helps.

1. Tap on Windows Key and click on search bar.
2. Type “Troubleshooting” without the quotes and click on Troubleshooting.
3. Then click on View All on the left panel of the screen.
4. Click on Windows Update.
5. Click on Next and follow the prompts to run the troubleshooter.

If the issue still persist, refer to the below method.

Step 2 : Also try to activate the Windows Installer Services in Services Window.

1. Press Windows Key + R Key.

2. Type “services.msc” without the quotes and hit on Enter Key.

3. Search for on Windows Installer.

4. Double click on it and under Startup type, select Automatic.

5. Then click on Start.

6. Click on Apply and click on OK.

Method 2 : I suggest you to temporarily disable the antivirus and check if it helps.

Disable Anti Virus:

NOTE: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn’t disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you’re done. If you’re connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 3 : I would suggest you to boot the Computer in clean boot mode and troubleshoot with the issue.

Refer to the below link to enter into clean boot state. The below link can also be applicable to Windows 10.

Clean boot disclaimer: A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot. You must log on to the computer as an administrator to be able to perform a clean boot. Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality when you perform a clean boot. When you start the computer normally, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or experience the original behavior if the problem still exists. If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps.

Once you perform clean boot do refer to the section “How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting” to boot the computer in normal mode.

If you the issue still persist, refer to the below method.

Method 4 : If you are still unable to upgrade to Windows 10. Then I suggest you to try to use the create Media installation tool in the below Microsoft Help Article and try upgrading to Windows 10. Chose the option as Upgrade from the Media creation tool.

Before upgrading to Windows 10, I suggest you to take a backup of important files and folders on external hard disk.

Fix: “something went wrong” while creating account on Windows 10

The average Windows 10 user may be faced with an error saying “Something went wrong. Please try again later” when they try to create a new user account on their Windows 10 computer from the Control Panel. This is especially the case with Windows 10 users who have recently upgraded from a previous version of Windows. The thing is, whenever a Windows 10 user creates a new user account, the OS tries to connect to Microsoft servers as users can only create new user accounts with Microsoft IDs on Windows 10 by default.

The “Something went wrong” error shows up when Windows 10’s attempts to communicate with Microsoft servers fail, and the following are some of the most effective methods that can be used to resolve this issue:

Set the date, time and time zone on your computer

Windows 10 may be having trouble communicating with Microsoft servers because the time, data and/or time zone on your computer is not right. If that is the case, simply setting the right time, date and time zone on your computer should fix the problem.

Allow your computer to use SSL and TSL

In many cases, allowing their computer to use SSL and TSL protocols enabled their Operating System to connect to the internet or, more specifically, the Microsoft servers and consequently got rid of the “Something went wrong” error for many a Windows 10 user.

Open the Control Panel. Navigate to Internet Options. Click on and head over to the advanced, Scroll to the very bottom of the checklist. Check the boxes beside the Use SSL 2.0, Use SSL 3.0, Use TSL 1.0, Use TSL 1.1 and Use TSL 1.2

Click on Apply, and then click on OK.

Try creating a new user account after implementing these changes, and you should no longer receive the “Something went wrong” error message.

Create a new user account through the Command Prompt

While creating a new user account through the Command Prompt will not actually solve the “Something went wrong” error when creating a new user account, it will, however, allow the user to successfully create a new user account which, unlike their old one, will not suffer from the “Something went wrong” issue.

Open the Start Menu. Type cmd into the Search bar, right click on the program named Command Prompt that appears and select Run as administrator.

Type in the command net user (desired account name) (desired account password) /add.

Press the Enter. Next, to turn the newly created account into an Administrator, type in the command net localgroup administrators (name of newly created account) /add.

Press the Enter. As soon as the last command is executed, a new Administrator account will have been created on your Windows 10 computer, and this user account will not be affected by the “Something went wrong” issue that the account you were previously using was.

User Suggested Method

This method is suggested by Ahmad Barakat in the comments section. The reason for him was that there was another account setup as a Microsoft account, this account was created automatically after upgrading to Windows 10!! and prevented him from signing in with his user profile. So he did this -> “Go to the user accounts> Manage other accounts> find that account and delete it”

[FIXED] ‘Something went Wrong. Try to reopen Settings later’ in Windows 10 Update

You may encounter the Windows 10 update issue if the services essential for the operation of Windows update are not properly configured. Moreover, corrupt Windows installation may also cause the error under discussion.

The user encounters the issue when he launches the Windows update in the system’s Settings but faces the “Something Went Wrong. Try to Reopen Settings Later” message.

Before moving on with the solutions to fix Windows update, check if clean booting your system solves the issue. Moreover, make sure that no 3 rd party utility (e.g. StopUpdates10) to manage Windows update is installed on your system.

Solution 1: Change the Startup Type of UOS Service to Automatic

The Update Orchestrator Service (UOS ) is essential for the proper functioning of the Windows updates. You may encounter the error at hand if the startup type of the said service is not set to automatic as it can create incompatibility between the OS modules. In this scenario, changing the startup type of UOS service to automatic may solve the problem.

1. Hit the Windows key and search for Services. Then, in the search result, right-click on Services and choose Run as Administrator. Open Services as Administrator
2. Now double-click on the Update Orchestrator Service to open its properties. Double Click UOS Service to Open its Properties
3. Then expand the dropdown box of startup type and select Automatic. Change the Startup Type of UOS Service to Automatic
4. Now click on Apply/OK buttons and reboot your PC.
5. Upon reboot, check if the Windows 10 update issue is resolved.
6. If not, change the startup type of Windows Update service to Automatic and then check if the issue is resolved.

Solution 2: Use the Command Prompt

If the above solution didn’t solve your issue, then using the relevant cmdlets in the elevated Command Prompt to edit the relevant settings/configurations of your system may solve the problem.

1. Launch the Windows menu by hitting the Windows key and search for Command Prompt. Then right-click on the result of Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. Launch the Elevated Command Prompt
2. Then execute the following one by one: Stop and Start the Services Related to Windows Update
3. Now reboot your PC and upon reboot, check if the Windows update is working fine.

Solution 3: Use the Registry Editor

The Windows update might not work properly if the relevant registry keys are not configured properly. In this case, editing the relevant registry keys may solve the problem.

Warning: Be very careful as editing the system’s registry requires a certain level of expertise and if not done rightfully, you may cause everlasting damage to the OS, system, or your data.

1. Create a backup of your system’s registry.
2. Hit the Windows key and in the search bar, search for Registry Editor. Then, in the results pulled by search, right-click on the Registry Editor and select Run as Administrator. Open Registry Editor as Administrator
3. Then navigate to the following: Double Click USO Start Registry Key to Change its Value
4. Now, in the right pane of the window, double click on Start and change its value to 2. Change USO Start Registry Key Value to 2
5. Then exit the Registry Editor of your PC and reboot the PC.
6. Upon reboot, check if the Windows update is operating fine.
7. If not, check if restoring the Windows Update registry values to the defaults solves the issue (you may use the key from another working but secure PC).

Solution 4: Create a New User Account

The Windows updates may not work properly if your system’s user profile is corrupt. In this context, creating a new user profile, and then updating the system may solve the problem.

1. Create a new local user profile on your system (make sure the account is of administrator nature) and power off your PC.
2. Now power on your system and log in to it by using the newly created profile to check if the updates issue is resolved.

Solution 5: Perform an SFC Scan

The Windows update might not function properly if the files essential for its operation are corrupt. In this context, performing an SFC scan (which may find and repair the corrupt OS files) may solve the problem.

1. Perform an SFC scan of your system (you may have to use the safe mode of your system). This scan may take some time to complete, so, perform it when you can spare your system for plenty of time. Perform an SFC Scan
2. Now check if Windows updates are functioning properly.

Solution 6: Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Your System

If none of the solutions has worked for you, then performing an in-place upgrade of the Windows of your system may solve the problem.

1. Launch a web browser and download the Media Creation Tool of Microsoft.
2. Then launch the downloaded file with administrator privileges and select Upgrade this PC Now. Select Upgrade This PC Now
3. Now select the option of Keep Windows Settings, Personal Files, and Apps and wait for the completion of the upgrade process. Select the Option of Keep Windows Settings, Personal Files, and Apps
4. After completion of the upgrade, check if the update issue is resolved.
5. If not, then perform a repair install of the Windows of your system, and hopefully, the Windows 10 update issue is resolved.
