I couldn’t run the game till I found some help on the internet. Basically, what I had to do was install dotnet20 and d3dx9 with Winetricks on the Bottle created by CrossOver. I just didn’t try using a controller so I’m not sure if that part works. Here are the instructions I followed:

Get the game to run! (With a controller!)

Okay, so you’ve got Sonic Adventure 2 installed on Steam in a clean Wine prefix. But oh no, it doesn’t run! What’s up with that?

Turns out it’s a pretty simple process to get it running. On top of Steam’s requirements, you’re going to need to install these via winetricks:

winetricks dotnet20 d3dx9 xinput

Sonic Adventure 2’s installscript.vdf actually installs DirectX, but let’s use d3dx9 for the sake of consistency/completion.

This should allow you to use the Launcher.exe and create a config, then launch the game. Hooray, it works!

. But wait, what about my controller? This game uses XInput, so I can’t use my controller! I gotta go fast, and that ain’t happenin’ on a keyboard.

We’re actually going to use the same solution that is needed for Windows users who are using gamepads other than the Xbox 360 controller, but this is needed even if you’re using a 360 controller on Wine.

Should be the first zip file listed; extract that exe file somewhere convenient (I just put it in steamapps/common/Sonic Adventure 2/x360ce/).

Connect your controller, then open up x360ce. It will probably ask to search the web for configurations, go ahead and let it search. Depending on your controller, it will quickly find a config for you that works out of the box. Check the bindings, then save and quit.

One of the release games with the dreamcast and what a blinder! Sonic’s first proper 3d adventure is a huge game and offers plenty of lastability because of the ability to choose a character and simply wander around. The level of puzzles is superb and you can immerse yourself as little or as much as you’d like in order to complete the game. Graphically it was gorgeously ahead of it’s time and the soundtrack was absolutely spot on too.

Once completed I’d find myself drawn back into playing the game from the start again (by deleting my saves) simply because it was so much fun. Redefined the phrase ‘cute platformer’ by tagging on an enormous game that was simply excellent. Also not as linear as the follow-up, meaning once you’d completed the tasks there was not much more fun to be had (in Sonic 2).

Very good game one of best 3d Sonic titles. In this game, you can play as Tails, Sonic, Knuckles, Amy, Big, E-102, and even two hidden characters.

The first 3d sonic game to take 3d gaming to a new level. The character selection and free roam capabilities were spot on and offered countless hours og play and replay. This title is easy to get hooked, and is beyond the abilities of the more recent releases in terms of enjoyability.

Sonic adventure is an advanced 1998 3D platforming game developed by sega for their Dreamcast. Ports were released for the GCN and the PC in 2003. These met poor reviews by critiqs. The game has high quality graphics and may be hard to emulate on some lower quality computers.

The premiere DC Sonic game, this adventure takes Sonic and pals into the 3rd dimension for fantastically frantic gameplay.
