Speed Download for Mac
Softonic review
One of the most powerful download managers for Mac
If you consider yourself a power downloader, than my suggestion is to get a proper download manager to handle and sort all those files. Speed Download is a good solution.
Speed Download was embroiled in a little controversy recently with the MacHeist Community, regarding the upgrade from version 4 to 5. We won’t delve into this here though and instead will focus simply on the application itself.
Fitted with a customizable interface similar to that of iTunes, Speed Download gives you immediate control over all your downloads. The best way to browse through your content, apart from the search box, is the left side of the interface. You can view your library elements, servers, folders and specific searches. To keep the application running but have it out of the way, simply use the mini-controller.
You can schedule downloads and auto-resume them, both individually or in queue. Speed Download also lets you share files via FTP with full encryption, and includes .Mac/iDisk/WEBDAV connectivity. Downloads are generally faster than in a browser and the really good thing is that you can have them in a separate application, so you can use your browser simply for visiting web sites.
One little issue we have with Speed Download is that it can use up quite a lot of RAM, so make sure you don’t go download crazy and start looking for hundreds of files. This is why queuing and organizing downloads is really important.
Speed Download is the perfect application for any download junky, thanks to advanced downloading features and a well designed interface.

Speed Download 5 combines four amazing products — a turbo-charged download manager with auto-resuming downloads, a fully featured secure FTP client, a file sharing utility with full encryption, and complete .Mac/iDisk/WEBDAV connectivity — into one small and easy to use application.
Speed Download 5 also introduces a stunning new user interface option that feels right at home in Mac OS X and is designed to help you be even more productive with fewer mouse clicks hence, completely redefining what you can do with your time online. Introducing SD Minimized mode; a serious upgrade to the Speed Download floater. Fully supports drag n drop, completely resizable, customizable, and a whole lot more. In minimized mode, SD is even more discrete on your Mac. Save screen space, but not power!

Although all internet browsers come with built-in FTP and file transfer support along with pause and resume options, in more than one instances, users need more power and control over the download process.
Here is where Speed Download steps in and helps you manage your downloads and uploads.
Download manager that is no longer under development
Worth mentioning is that, since March 2014, the Speed Download developers, Yazsoft, have closed their doors and no longer offer any support for their projects.
Even though you can still download the last Speed Download trial version which runs on Mac OS X El Capitan, you are advised to use alternative solutions, such as the Folx application.
Folx can use multiple threads for the same transfer, provides control over the download speed, can handle torrents, and much more.
Easy to setup download manager that can improve the transfer speed
Speed Download is a handy FTP, download and upload manager that provides a wide variety of features for both basic and advanced users.
The installation process is fairly simple, you have to download the ZIP file from the official site, extract and mount the DMG image and copy the Speed Download folder to your Mac’s Applications folder.
You can try and test Speed Download for 21 days after which you can buy one license for $ 25,00 from the Yazsoft store page.
Connect to FTP servers and transfer files to your Mac in no time
One could say that Speed Download comes with 2 different interfaces, a Simple interface only for the download manager and an Advanced interface for download and FTP manager. You can easily switch between them from the Speed Download menu.
Both interfaces are easy-to-use and will provide quick and easy access to all the features you need. You can also enable or disable the Floater window, from which you can monitor your downloads in a small panel that you can position anywhere on the screen.
By using Speed Download, you can easily download and upload files, pause, resume and schedule future downloads. The Advanced mode enables you to quickly upload files to Rapidshare and limit the download and upload speeds.
Moreover, Speed Download offers a fully features SFTP client, encrypted file sharing utility and iDisk, WebDAV and Speed Download connectivity.
Integrates with Safari and iTunes to further streamline your workflow
Speed Download also comes with support for Safari and iTunes. You will be able to automatically add the downloaded songs to iTunes in the Speed Download playlist.
In addition, all downloads from Safari will be rerouted trough Speed Download if you choose to install the Safari plugin.
In conclusion, Speed Download has been a practical download manager with numerous features that could satisfy the needs of most users, but the project is no longer under development, and you are advised to turn to alternative solutions, such as Folx.

Speed Download Lite
Speed Download 5 combines four amazing products a turbo-charged download manager
Speed Download Lite Overview
Speed Download Lite is simply a stripped down version of Speed Download 5 offering just the download manager — without any of the extra features (i.e. FTP, File Sharing, WEBDAV, etc) found in Speed Download 5. With regards to the interface and browser integration, both Versions of SD offer the same top of the line performance and reliabilty that you’d expect from a download manager.
Speed Download combines four amazing products — a turbo-charged download manager with auto-resuming downloads, a fully featured Secure FTP client, a file sharing utility with full encryption, and complete .Mac/iDisk/WEBDAV connectivity — into one small and easy to use application.
Speed Download also introduces a stunning new user interface option that feels right at home in Mac OS X and is designed to help you be even more productive with fewer mouse clicks hence, completely redefining what you can do with your time online. Introducing SD Minimized mode; a serious upgrade to the Speed Download floater. Fully supports drag n drop, completely resizable, customizable, and a whole lot more. In minimized mode, SD is even more discrete on your Mac. Save screen space, but not power!
Some of the other new features of SD5 include the following:
an overhauled interface with various view modes,
a re-engineered ‘Universal’ download engine optimized for maximum performance,
a powerful database to manage all your downloads, uploads, and file transfers,
a brand new fully featured, built-in FTP client,
encrypted file sharing between SD5 users,
a high performance utility for downloading web content for offline viewing,
.Mac iDisk integration,
auto-resuming file transfers all the time,
unlimited UNDOs throughout the entire application,
smart folder technology,
and much more!
As an added bonus, Speed Download now includes a link to Transmission; an incredibly well designed Bittorrent application.

iPhone 12 issue?
I usually love this app. I have used it on iPhones for years and years. And it worked fine on my wife’s iPhone 8 and on my iPhone 11 ProMax. A few days ago we upgraded to my iPhone 12 Pro Max and she loves her new iPhone 12 Mini. But both show a disappointing incompatibility with the Ookla Speedtest app. The Ookla app on my iMac (2019) works great. It shows my Mbps speed to be at or even over the 300 Mbps line I pay for. But when I run the app on both my new iPhone 12s I get the exact same results of very low speeds shown. Sometime measures under 100, usually around 150. I take care to match the chosen server to the one the Mac is using and it is an incredible difference. Had I only bought the one iPhone I would likely have put on my mask and gone to the Apple Store. But two iPhones doing the exact same thing? So I dwonloaded a competing speedtest app which I do not usually like as much as Ookla. That app works fine on both the 12 Max and the 12 Mini. Measurements all pretty much match the Mac’s Ookla results at 300 . I think this shows the problem is in something Ookla is not allowing for as to some sort of change in the iPhone 12. I hope that the Ookla team will touch base with Apple and fix this. Note I have given this app 4 stars as I really love it and have used it for years and years. BUT IF YOU HAVE AN IPHONE 12 THERE MAY WELL BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM. Let’s hope it to be temporary so I can dump the speedtest I don’t like.
Great, but one desired feature
I use this app all the time. I like that it records my speeds over time so I have «a case» against my argumentative «your lousy fluctuating speeds are not our problem» ISP. What I wish it did, though, was also put in the records the absolute failures of data flow. Zero throughput doesn’t get recorded as zero throughput; I’m just informed that the internet could not be reached so the speedtest was not performed. While I get that, it leaves me without any PROOF that the internet could not be reached (to show to my ISP). I run tests sometimes once every minute for 10 minutes where my speeds go from zero to 30Mbps /- up and down but FIVE of those tests have zero throughput so they don’t get logged in results. All I have is five tests of the ten, and, of course, since the zero results don’t show in the results list, the impression is my internet connectivity is varying but never totally gone (which it is).
V1.4 Has Bugs — NOW FIXED.
This is a fantastic app. The major bugs disussed below were fixed by the developer only a day after they were reported. I appreciate their super-fast attention to this. Best speed testing app out there and also the prettiest interface IMHO.
I love this app and have used it for a longtime. The most recentupdate has some obvious bugs that I can;t beleive they did not catch before releasingthis to the public. You used ot be abe to calibrate the dial so that….for example….if your connections are generally in the range of 0-100 mbps, you could set the top end of the dial to 100. Now it is set to 500 and there’s no way to change it. But the new “added feature” of this current release is that the indicater needle on the dial now points in the 180 degree opposite direction of the measurement. So if your speed is being measured as 30,the needle points to the exact other side of th dial and says soething like 400. If your speed is 95, the needle point back at like 0 or 5. How do software engineers let stuff out the door like this? I’m still rating this a 3 because I like this app so much, but these bugs need to be addressed FAST.
Developer Response ,
Hello,
Sorry about that. Odd one that didn’t show up in the test build. We submitted an update with a fix, which should be available soon. Sorry again, and thanks for using Speedtest.
