This is the Windows 10 compatibility fix by JanB for Star Trek Starfleet Command 3,
This is the Windows 10 compatibility fix by JanB for Star Trek Starfleet Command 3, it works with and without mods
Doesn’t work with Windows 10. Fail
I’m playing it right now on a Windows 10 PC so it definitely works. but it won’t display ship textures on my laptop with its tiny Intel IGP. So it seems like it doesn’t play nicely with weak IGPs or certain laprop drivers, nothing I can do about that though.
On my new tablet with a Z8300 CPU the game works again.

Any way to get fullscreen? Great mod though!
I also would like how to get fullscreen! It is a great patch!
For fullscreen try one of these:
it works but it needs a full screen mode i can play the game well
See my suggestions further down the comments page.
Welp tried the fix.. and the INI file was in a windows directory.. and could not over write it. The game loads to a black screen and crashed.
If you are unable to modify game files, it’s because Windows 10 operates similarly to Windows 7, in that you need to give yourself administration rights. Go to: C:\Program Files\Activision. Right click on properties. Click on Security and then click on the Edit button. You will see a list of directories under ‘Group or user names’. Every one of these line item directories will require you to go through and click ‘Allow’. Apply the change to each one. You will now be allowed to make program changes to SFC3. Before you install the Windows 10 patch, it is recommended the Taldren patch have been installed first. If you are playing a custom mod, it will be necessary to change the galactic map directory (.mvm)within the .ini file. To do this: C:\Program Files\Activision\(Your Custom Mod)\Assets\Scripts\Campaigns — open any of the campaign files as an .MCT or .TEXT file. You will see an example of this:
EarlyMapName=»TYPHON2018.mvm»
MidMapName=»TYPHON2018.mvm»
LateMapName=»TYPHON2018.mvm»
Copy this portion: TYPHON2018.mvm and now open the .ini file: C:\Program Files\Activision\(your custom mod) and open the sfc configuration file as a .TEXT
Scroll down to where it says:[Meta]
Look for the .mvm extension name. Make sure it matches the campaign for your mod. If not copy the map name like this, for example: MapName=TYPHON2018.mvm
Accept the changes and you should be ready to play your game.
Has there been a fix for invisible ships and garbled text box on win 10 please let me know
Yes. Scroll down to the Windows 10 fix on my page and refer to the links that will take you to the Hot & Spicy SFC forums. The issues for getting the stock game to play correctly can be found there as well. A fix using the SFC Launcher and dgVoodoo + reShade downloads should correct the issue.
how to install the update?

How is it installed?
Download the Windows 10 Patch. Copy the new d3d8.dll to the Sfc3 main directory. Download the corrected sfc.ini file (link provided below) to the Sfc3 main directory. If you are playing the original out-of-box Taldren game, no further modification is required. If you are playing a mod, make sure the .mvm name(mod’s galactic map) is changed in the ini file. This is toward the bottom ([Meta]) and would look like this, for example: MapName=TYPHON2018.mvm
I have recently modified the sfc configuration (sfc.ini) for Jan_B’s Windows 10 fix to correct the Window-in-Window issue. It will now allow the stock Taldren game and mods to operate on full display for both laptops and monitors. I will have the configuration fix up shortly for download with the link for this mod.
Direct link for Windows 10 sfc.ini:
Ok can i get clear and precise instructions becuase ive done the install with the all in one mod and just this config file and bth times either the game runs in windowed mode or fullscreen, and either way when i run a tutorial my ship isnt there and i cant read the words that are in the box. I did a skirmish and i saw weapons fire but again couldnt see my ship or the enemy ship.
Sounds like you may have a game install issue separate from the Windows 10 mod fix. I would recommend uninstalling the game and clearing the cache files (look for Activision on your C drive and remove the directory for sfc3 if found). Reinstall the game and the All Language Taldren patch (you can find a copy of the REQUIRED patch with either our Typhon Pact or Mirror campaign mods (click on user name: AlDaja) if you can not find the patch elsewhere) prior to installing the game/patch or mods, remember to deactivate your virus software. Once completed, install Jan_B’s Windows 10 fix. As noted, it will not correct the Window-in-Window (W/W) issue, especially on some laptops. If this mod alone does not correct the W/W issue, download the addendum patch I recently put up (link is in the comments for this download or you can find it on our download page by clicking on my user name). If the W/W persists, it will require manual manipulation of the 3D line codes in the .ini file (sfc3 configuration file) found in the main directory of the game to correct the issue. If you are not certain how to do that, let me know and I’ll try to walk you through it. I should note, make sure that you check the last W/W you had up on your computer for previous Window apps. If the Windows box is not at full screen, Windows 10 will default to the previous W/W setting regardless of Jan’s Windows 10 fix.
WHat exactly in the files do i have to change and change them too
Also running windows 10 64 bit
OK, I’ll tackle the game display in a moment, but am going to assume the black screen problem is no longer an issue. Black screen with sound is what you’ll get prior to installing the Windows 10 patch. Presuming game install/Taldren patch was successful, install the Windows 10 patch, which is basically dragging the d3d8.dll and .ini files in the download and letting them replace the existing ones in the main sfc3 directory. As far as messing with the .ini line codes, I think it would be best to forgo that suggestion unless you are using your own custom mod, in which case, the only items you need to change is the galactic map (.mvm) destination; I can give you specifics on that if indeed you are using a custom mod. If you are using one or both of the mods on my home page, then you will need to download the Windows 10 addendum link provided on my page as it includes the .ini files required for those mods. Anyway..
As far as the display is concerned:
For laptop displays:Right click on your game icon (do this for each version of sfc3 you may have) on the desktop. Click on properties. Click on compatibility. Click on the ‘Run compatibility troubleshooter’. Click on ‘Try recommended settings’. The app will ask you to test the game. Although it will be in windowed view, you should see that the toolbar at the bottom of your screen is now hidden. Exit the game and save the setting when prompted in the troubleshooting app. The app should have autoset SFC3 to now run in Windows XP (Service Pack 3). A shield will now display over the SFC3 desktop icon and you will be prompted each time you load the game if you want Windows to make changes to the game setting, click yes each time. If for some reason it doesn’t autoset, click the box that says run for compatibility and select the Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the menu.
For display on external monitor:
Do the same steps above, but change your scale and layout to 100% (if not already preset) and change the monitor resolution to one that allows it to fill the screen. I have mine set to 1024 x 768.
So far, I have been able to play the stock game and have had no problems on full screen with the tutorial or original mission campaigns. I have also played through on the three custom mods our team made: Typhon Pact, Bonus and MirrorrorriM and haven’t encountered and issue with the external monitor slaved from my laptop.

— Check for the latest drivers for (Video, motherboard chipset, sound card, etc.)
— Check for windows updates on critical updates and/or driver updates (shown as non-critical/optional)
— Check your game install folder for any error logs that might lead you to the issue.
— Defrag the drive the game is installed on.
— Ensure you have good ventilation through your PC case, overheating the CPU and GPU is bad.
— Buy and install some more fans for your computer tower to improve the airflow inside.
— Reinstall the game completely.
— Make sure you have good network connection from your game computer to the server that the online game is on.
— Make sure you are playing a game that you have better computer stats than the Minimum Requirements posted on the game’s store page.
— Make sure you are playing a game that was designed for your operating system.
— Try googling the problem and read the game devs forum.
— Make sure your computer is not infected by active malware.
— Check the inside of your computer. If it is dirty with caked dust, lint and fur, get a professional to clean it out or DIY. After doing that, re-seat your memory chips and video card and make sure those slots are clean.
— BSoDs can be caused by poorly written device drivers or malfunctioning hardware, such as faulty memory, power supply issues, overheating of components, or hardware running beyond its specification limits.
— Run stress testing tools (below)
Get these to make sure you have the latest and the right tools.
Use the Driver Sweeper in windows Safe mode and clean out any drivers you know your system does not need. Windows will still load some of them even though the hardware is not there and could cause instability.
Run CPU-Z and go to the last «About» tab and export your results in TXT format. Post the results here. This will show you what hardware you have an what speeds it is running at, amongst many other tid-bits of info.
HWMonitor is a hardware monitoring program that reads PC systems main health sensors : voltages, temperatures, fans speed.
Run 3DMark on your system to make sure you don’t seen any type of graphical anomalies like white sprites, flashes, etc. This will stress your computer also.
Run Prime95 for at least an hour on your system to make sure all the worker threads do not throw errors. If they do, then you know you either have something failing, like memory or even the CPU, or you have something overclocked. This tool should also detect all CPU cores and run worker threads on them. Use this for a simple stress test.
Run Memtest86 so that you can load up your memory and stress test it while it pushes registers through it.

STO Help for the windowed Maximised / Fullscreen Solution
First off this was done on the PC (Win10).
1, Find your install folder for STO (for example mine is C:\Program Files (x86)\Arc
2, Locate the config file in this folder and open it with regular notepad.
3, Scroll down (approx halfway) till you find :- displayinwindowmode = 1
this is the standard windows maximised in game.
4, To turn to fullscreen mode replace the 1 with a 0
Make sure you are following the quest tasker directions and check the mini map and map for a circle that shows where you got to go. You have to get close to objectives to get the Interact button you see on your screen, then you can click » F» key or click button with mouse.
There are serveral random bugs with the tutorial missions that happen sometimes where the programmed events don’t happen or are missed by your client. You could try just quiting STO program and relogin to that character, maybe that will clear the problem but should doubt it. You might have to quit and reroll a character to get passed the bug condition in the tutorial mission. If you have a bio that you want to keep in a character that you have to reroll then highlight it, Copy and paste it in a text doc on your computer, and while on that character type in chat «/gensendmessage tailor_root show» and save the outfit.. once you done that, Kill the alt and make a new one.
Don’t spend a Long time in the character creator, designing your character and writting your bio. Once you get out of tutorial, you can tailor your character and write your bio you had in mind.
Search this Forum for «Stuck in Tutorial» for more info.

If you are in any instance mission and think you have a Bug stopping you from completing that mission, try the following tips:
1. Read the mission details and the tasker for directions and important information that you might be missing. Check the STO forum and wiki and google for a walkthrough of that mission to determine if you are not doing the mission correctly.
2. Beam out of mission, then continue the mission at the place you come back to.
3. Beam out of mission, Drop that mission, pick that mission and try again.
4. Beam out of the mission, log off of STO then log back into STO, then continue that mission. Maybe also try rebooting computer and router at this point. Many problems like this with the game stem from poor or faulty Network connection between your computer and the game servers. Check and troubleshoot your network connection to the game servers.
5. Beam out of mission, Skip that mission if it is in a chain. Check the bug forum and google for a workaround or if it is known bug. Report the problem in a bug report? Try that mission again in a month or two.
