[SOLVED] plymouth not working during boot

I have installed plymouth following the instructions from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Plymouth . My /etc/mkinitcpio.conf: https://ptpb.pw/uc6O, /boot/grub/grub.cfg: https://ptpb.pw/30Z6 . I have ran `mkinitcpio -p linux` and `grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg` afterwards. I’m using lightdm and changed to using `lightdm-plymouth.service`. I’m able to get the preview of plymouth going, but it’s not working when the computer is booting up. I tried using plymouth and plymouth-git packages from aur.

Has anyone encountered such problems?

Is ‘quiet splash’ included in your kernel parameters?

If I understood it correctly it’s enough to set them in GRUB which I did. You can see it in the grub.cfg I attached

I’m able to get the preview of plymouth going, but it’s not working when the computer is booting up.

Please elaborate what you mean «by not working». Does the preview just not show up (i.e. black screen) but the boot process continues without any problems?

Might be a graphics related issue, what is your graphic cards setup?

The preview doesn’t work, but the computer boots normally. Lightdm also works fine.

I’m using ThinkPad x260 with Intel graphics.

Ah, sorry I forgot to mention that you have to run that command as root.
Because now there is only your user journal but I’m interested in the system journal, especially the kernel messages

Last night I was doing some work on my lubuntu server. I had about 2 months worth of updates that had piled up, so I started running all of them. The process got halfway through, and then errored out. I didn’t give it much attention, since this has happened before. I ran updates again, and it again got halfway through, and errored out again. Again — I didn’t really think much of it, I figured I’d just reboot and try again. It had been feeling a bit sluggish anyway. Now I’m no longer able to get to the gui. Everything seems to work fine on boot — I get the Lubuntu splash screen, and then one of the following 2 screens comes up (http://i.imgur.com/4iQYATl.jpg , http://i.imgur.com/G4tTzeD.jpg), and it just hangs at «Starting Show Plymouth Boot Screen». I did a bit of searching, and found most people have reported this as an intermittent error, so I tried a few more times, and it is not intermittent for me. Any ideas??

Update:
I posted this to reddit as well, and was given some things to try out.

I was unable to get to Grub by holding shift at boot
I was unable to get to TTY by pressing ctrl+alt+F1 or ctrl+alt+F2 at the lubuntu splash screen

Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

Ubuntu 16.04 зависает на экране-заставке во время начальной загрузки

Спецификации Базовой системы:

• Samsung SSD 500 ГБ
• ЦП: Intel i5-7500
• ПОРШЕНЬ: 16 ГБ
• GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX1080
• В настоящее время настраиваемый к Двойной загрузке с Windows 10 64bit, но Windows загружается без любого опустошения.

Проблема:

Ubuntu 16.04 зависает в экране-заставке начальной загрузки неограниченно долго, но после попытки зафиксировать его, теперь он успешно загружается в режим оболочки. Кроме того, даже нажатие на ESC, когда это зависает, не отображает журналов.

Таким образом, я не мог видеть, что начальная загрузка вошла кроме SSHing в мой рабочий стол, и открытый /var/log/boot.log

Вот то, что я получил, в то время как это зависало:

Я также попробовал dmesg | less после многочисленного поиска с помощью Google для просмотра журналов начальной загрузки, и встреченный в это в конце его:

Кажется, что существует проблема с картой NVIDIA, как я первоначально думал.

Что я сделал для решения этой проблемы:

1. Обновление GRUB
   • Перешел к режиму восстановления и открытому терминалу
   • Измененный режим начальной загрузки от quiet splash кому: acpi=force для принуждения начальной загрузки в оболочку теперь я откатывал это.
   • cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager показывает lightdm как значение по умолчанию.
2. Обновите драйвер видеокарты Intel
3. Я пытался использовать восстановление начальной загрузки для устранения проблем личинки, и результаты как таковы на pastebin: http://paste.ubuntu.com/25620967/

Что я, возможно, сделал для порождения этой проблемы:

sudo service lightdm stop

• Чтобы делать попытку управления вентилятором GPU невнимательно.
• Но я работал sudo service lightdm restart
• Теперь я полагаю, что lightdm не запускает при начальной загрузке.
• Вот ссылка, по которой я перешел для управления вентилятором GPU удаленно

sudo service lightdm restart

• Я пытался перезапустить lightdm, и он действительно дает мне некоторый положительный вывод, который является экраном входа в систему, но я ничего не могу сделать здесь, поскольку он все еще замораживается.

Plymouth causes boot to hang

After some searching I can’t seem to find a solution to this problem.

After installing Plymouth per the instructions here I rebooted and everything went A-OK! I changed the theme in `/usr/plymouth/plymouthd.conf` and ran

After rebooting I get the splash screen then I get a couple messages on the screen and it hangs. The messages I get are ones I’ve seen before and never bothered with becuause they don’t cause issues normally. I still get the messages if I disable splash in the bootloader, and it boots without issue. I’m not sure how to get a log of a previous boot, or if that’s even possible.

Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance! As more information is required I’ll edit it in here and post into another comment.

What happens if you manually re-build the initramfs with mkinitcpio -p linux? What’s your bootloader config? And which bootloader (GRUB? systemd-boot?) are you using? Note that for my plymouth default themes, I do not have arch-glow:

If this is a custom theme, we will need those files too.

After posting this I removed everything associated with Plymouth from my system and started over, leaving the default theme (spinner), with the same issue. Before a meeting today I tried to view the boot messages as my laptop was booting with Plymouth, to see where it failed. I hit ESC and it showed me the boot messages and it booted fine (i.e. Plymouth not showing at all, but still being loaded).

I’m wondering if it’s an issue with lightdm-plymouth, gonna switch to regular lightdm and try again.

Another question (that copious Googling hasn’t answered yet): is it possible to view previous boot logs? In Ubuntu I used to be able to see the previous 5-or-so logs, which would be really helpful in this situation: boot with plymouth until it hangs, then reboot w/o it and see where it hung?

Would that be possible in Arch? Thanks.

you can use journaltctl to query the logs, and the -b switch together with —list-boots to see specific boots. We still dont know which bootloader you are using by the way.

Чиним Plymouth в Debian 8 (а возможно и еще где-то)

TL;DR Захотелось поставить на старый нетбук Debian 8, сказано — сделано. В целом все работает, но вот вместо красивой заставки при загрузке — бегущие строки загрузки ядра и сервисов. Не красиво. В чем же проблема? Будем разбираться.

Итак, лежит у меня старый (уже) нетбук ASUS 1201N. В принципе он и ранее использовался для чего-нибудь типа поправить из консоли конфиг или посмотреть видосик в поездке. Но современный софт не оставляет шансов — работать на нем ныне уже практически невыносимо. Ну или если у вас ну очень спокойный темперамент, то может и пойдет. Установка SSD помогла не особо.

И тут типичный гик скажет: так поставь на него Linux, все залетает! (нет). Формально если у вас под виндой тормозит Firefox или Chrome, то в Linux будет картина плюс-минус та же самая. К этому добавляется то, что на моем нетбуке свежие KDE и Gnome ведут себя еще менее отзывчиво чем винда, с секундными лагами интерфейса «нажал-нажалось». В общем, наш удел MATE desktop, консоль, vim, музычка, иногда видосики, какие потянут. Но суть не в этом.

В чем же проблема?

Итак, установлен Debian 8, закрытый драйвер nVidia, душа просит дальнейшей эстетики, установлен plymouth. Но вместо симпатичной загрузочной анимации в лучшем случае видим три текстовые точки и ползущий снизу прогрессбар

Первый подход

Первым делом в wiki дебиана подсказывают, что это все из-за закрытых драйверов, нету там framebuffer адекватного, поэтому поставь uvesafb.

Расписывать не буду, так как подробная инструкция приведена здесь: wiki.debian.org/ru/Plymouth

Идея в целом понятна, способ в частности позволяет поставить более высокое разрешение в системной консоли и т.д.

Но вот незадача, plymouth в Debian 8 версии 0.9.0 по прежнему отказывается работать. Либо текстовая тема, либо ошибка. Я перелопатил с десяток статей по настройке правильных параметров для uvesafb, но увы.

Второй подход

Следующий этап, надо дебажить. В общем благодаря дебагу и гуглению удалось напороться на следующий тред: www.linux.org.ru/forum/desktop/12848541

Если вкратце, проблема в связке plymouth и uvesafb. Последнюю вполне можно использовать с ним, но она не ставит своему устройству флаг boot_vga — т.е. первичный экран, с которого происходит загрузка. Plymouth же очень хочет видеть этот флаг и не найдя его обламывается с той самой ошибкой.

Дальнейшее гугление позволило найти также чуть более адекватный патч:

Дело за малым — пересобрать пакет.

Решение

Первым делом нам понадобятся devscripts и build-essential

Далее собственно сорцы plymouth:

Тут нам надо добавить новую запись в debian/changelog или просто поправить самую последнюю, чтобы номер версии отличался от официального, иначе при следующем обновлении системы к вам опять вернется родной пакет без патча. Например 0.9.0-9+fbfix.

Далее кладем патч в папку debian/patches под любым именем, например fix-bootvga-for-uvesafb.patch, не забываем также добавить его в файл debian/patches/series.

Далее все как обычно, выполняем:

Ставим полученные deb, ставим понравившуюся тему.

Радуемся красивым сплэшам при загрузке и выключении компьютера.

Да, если вы не обратили внимание, фикс должен также помочь починить plymouth для raspberry pi и возможно других миниатюрных машинок.
