Apple has announced that with macOS 11, they will begin to phase-out 32bit applications. This process should begin sometime in January 2018.

In checking my computer, I see that the Steam Client and the games it installs are all 32bit.

When will we start to see an update to the client and games?

The 64bit client doesn’t matter, as it doesn’t use more then 4 gigs of ram. All it does is launch games, and its up to the game devs/publishers to make their games 64bit, so go ask them. But seeing as how most games do not even come close to using 4 gigs of ram, don’t count on them moving to 64bit any time soon.

Seriously, what would a 64bit steam be able to do for you, that a 32bit steam could not do?

What would it be able to do under the new OS?

Launching would be just a start.

Well.. Isn’t that going to be sad for you? Though how many Mac Games are 64bit?
First off, I’m sure steam will make a 64 bit client when the OS launches & their old client won’t launch.

Secondly, you baboon. the developers & Publishers, That’s right. THOSE PEOPLE of their respective games HAVE TO PUT IN THE WORK TO MAKE IT 64bit.

Third, if the list of MacOS games that are 64bit, happens to be a tiny fraction of what’s actually on offer, or near the single digits, there might be a chance that 64bit OS for Mac is SOL for a while, and suddenly a 64bit windows running in that parrellal mode of yours, will be your best friend. (as windows isn’t likely to dump x86 support, until the CPU’s no longer support it, and even then it’ll take years & time for 32bit to not be used)

Obviously there’s nothing Valve can do directly about third-party games, but given that Apple are going to phase out 32-bit, getting moving on a 64-bit Steam client for macOS is not unreasonable. The overwhelming majority of software for Mac is 64-bit; out of the several hundred processes I currently have running, a grand total of 8 of them are 32-bit, and two of those are Steam. Even Steam’s own webhelpers are 64-bit!

If Valve wanted to be even more proactive, they could warn developers currently only shipping 32-bit binaries for macOS that they ought to update.

Как скачать Steam на Mac OS

После скачивания запустите установочный файл с расширением «.dmg». Примите лицензионное соглашение, нажав кнопку «I Agree», затем, как это принято на Mac OS, файл смонтируется в виртуальный привод, после чего откроется содержимое пакета установки.

Перетащите иконку Steam вправо, в папку Applications.

Затем на рабочем столе кликните правой кнопкой мыши на смонтированном виртуальном диске и выберите команду «Извлечь Steam».

После извлечения откройте Launchpad и запустите программу оттуда. Начнется, так же, как и во время установки клиента на Windows, загрузка обновлений, после ее окончания введите в открывшемся окне авторизации логин и пароль или зарегистрируйтесь, если аккаунта Steam у вас еще нет.

Mac OS Catalina 10.15 is going to be the first Mac OS to only support 64-bit. Steam is not going to work for Mac OS 10.15 because the client cannot benefit itself to 32-bit and it has not been optimised to 64-bit, now you have been warned that whenever you have updated the Mac OS to 10.15 Steam will cease to work and then all the Mac users will be extremely upset so please stop the updates after you get to Mojave.

Honestly, you do my copy steam_osx over the top of an older version trick, and it works just fine.

I will be very surprised indeed if this isn’t sorted by default for everyone before Catalina comes out. The bigger issue is the number of games that don’t have 64-bit binaries.

Also it seems like there’s a bug which makes game launches not work right. This is why you don’t run beta OSes, kids.

Here is a video of me launching a game on Steam on macOS 10.15 Catalina. I cut the video just after loading the overlay because I didn’t want to show my online friends in the video.

It is very, very far from irretrievably broken. And running a developer-only beta of a new OS always leads to stuff being broken. Backblaze pops up an error message every once in a while because of changes Catalina makes to filesystem layout. DaisyDisk is pretty broken. I’m only running Catalina because I am myself a developer. Normal people really should just wait until it properly comes out later this year, and if Steam is still a little broken when Catalina is actually properly released, then there’ll be cause for concern.

Steam works for Catalina already. When you upgrade to Catalina, your currently installed Steam version will not work. Delete it and re-download the app from Steam. It downloads a working version then.

However, many games (including 64-bit ones) seem not to work yet. Of course, as others have mentioned, do not use betas as your primary operating system.

I just installed Catalina and could not open my previously installed Steam. However, I downloaded the latest version and installed it and it opened up without a problem. I agree with other posters and say wait for the final release to condemn Steam to Mac death. The running application does show the «can’t run this app» icon, but it is running. (Wierd.)

Huh — I just tried to launch a game (Cities: Skylines) and it says app running but the window never opened. Give Valve some time to iron out the issues with the new OS and I’m sure things will work out. Or, there will be lots of people calling 800-MYAPPLE and complaining, I’d imagine.

Nevermind — the game did finally open. It just took a REALLY long time to do so.

EDIT: Steam updated itself and when it relaunched, the Dock icon refreshed itself and the «can not run app» icon went away.

How to update your Steam install to 64-bit before macOS Catalina

Yes, the Steam client itself is 64-bits, and most of your games probably are too, but if you’ve had an install for a while, your client is probably only 32-bit. Here’s how to make sure you’ve got a Steam client compatible with macOS Catalina.

You’ll have to ask Valve why they can’t always update your 32-bit Steam client app to the 64-bit version that will run under macOS Catalina. But, AppleInsider is repeatedly being asked by users why their install is yelling at them that it needs an update.

The update from Valve is ready, and the Steam client will work just fine under macOS Catalina — you just may have to prepare the ground a little.

Specifically, the problem is with the Steam client on your Mac. Even if you have shortcuts to your favorite games, they all launch through that Mac app, and it’s possible that your copy of that is still a 32-bit app.

If you’re stuck with that 32-bit version, you have to manually get rid of it and then reinstall a new copy.

Trash talk

One quick tip: do be certain to have your Steam account name and password to hand. You clicked that Remember Me button years ago, but this is going to appear to Steam as if you’re setting up a new computer.

You’ll have to be able to log in again, and you’ll have to have access to email to get the verification codes that you’ll be sent.

When you’re sure you have the account details, start with this:

Quit Steam
Go to your Applications folder
Drag Steam out to the Trash

If you have Hazel installed on your Mac, it will spot that you’ve removed an application and will offer to also delete all of that app’s supporting files. As good as that is, as so much handier it is than going through the whole process of deleting them manually, don’t let Hazel do it.

That’s because Hazel will do too good a job and it’ll remove everything. We want rid of a lot of Steam, but not the bit that includes your games.

So next, you find all of Steam’s supporting files from the Finder.

Hold Shift, Command and press G. In the Go to Folder dialog that appears, enter this:

/Library/Application Support/ and click Go.

In the folder that opens, scroll to find the Steam folder, and delete everything in there except /steamapps. That directory is where your games live, and keeping that folder preserves the installs.

Next, repeat that Go to Folder with each of the following. In every one, look for Steam or Valve files.

/Library/Saved Application State/

Do be careful to solely select Steam or Valve folders, but then drag them to the Trash and empty it.

Almost done

Now go to store.steampowered.com where you’ll see an Install Steam button at the top right of the site.

Work through the steps it tells you. Then log back in to your Steam account, and you’re done.

There is, seriously, nothing you can do about games developers who haven’t moved to 64-bit binaries. Barring a virtual machine or something else drastic, those games won’t work under Catalina. But at least taking these steps now will save you having that awful moment when you’ve updated to Catalina, the Steam client won’t load at all, and it appears as if you’ve lost all your Steam games.

/Library/Application Support/Steam/Steam.AppBundle/. You’ll find a folder called Steam, and inside is a folder call contents. This is actually an application! Change the Steam folder to Steam.app, agree to let the OS add the extension, and then double-click on the new app. It’ll create a NEW folder called Steam, but leave the Steam.app folder behind. Drag this Steam.app folder to your Applications, replacing the old app. Now you have a 64bit version of Steam in your Applications folder and didn’t have to worry about deleting the wrong thing.

We tried this first! Some of the libraries are 32-bit too, so you’ll ultimately run into problems.
