When trying to install the gamepad driver it says Installation Failed, I have made sure i’s allowed to run in System Prefrences, but it’s failing with the following message:

The installation failed.

The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.

I’m running High Sierra which I’m wondering is not supported yet?

Same trouble here. It seems they’re aware of it and have submitted a possible fix into beta. There’s another discussion on this topic here:

There is a temporary solution—disable SIP, install the driver, re-enable SIP. I posted instructions on the other thread.

That shouldn’t be necessary any longer though. The gamepad driver installer now shows instructions how to enable the driver after install if required. Disabling SIP was just to get around having to enable the driver due to the 10.13 security changes.

Do you know what doesn’t work for you? Do you get prompted during the install to enable the driver? It should come up pretty quickly after entering in your password in the installer if so.

If not, does Steam ever prompt you to reinstall SteamInput? It should if it can’t communicate with the driver properly. Are you able to add controllers in the Big Picture controller settings? If you have the steam controller dongle plugged in when you start Steam and Big Picture it should recognize it in the controller settings and let you pair a controller.

i don’t get promped during the install unfortunatelly.
it doesn’t ask me to reinstall.
i use logitech f310s and it doesn’t recognise them eather. the only thing that seems working is a mosue. what now?

I checked out your Steam log files and it looks like Steam is recognizing your controller correctly but it isn’t applying a controller configuration so it’s ending up with the default configuration which binds mouse control to the right stick among other things.

Could you check your Controller Settings in Big Picture to see if «Generic Gamepad Configuration Support» is enabled and turn it on if it isn’t? That should enable configuration of your controller through Base Configurations and in-game configurations.

I have an Apple TV with Steam Link, and a Mac OS X Big Sur machine with Steam installed.

When I attempt to open Big picture on my Mac, or connect to my Mac with Steam Link, the Apple TV will say:

“Streaming requires additional driver installation.

Please follow the Steam prompts on the remote computer.”
Hi, I have noticed lots of problems with the steam input install and big sur. I’ve contacted valve regarding my issue specifically and will be posting updates.

If anyone had the same problem and knows of a solution please let us know!

When I return to my Mac it is requesting a Gamepad Driver Update.

I click the prompt which opens the “install Steam Input” installer.

I follow the prompts, input my password get to the notification that says:

“Please click the ‘Allow’ button to load system software from ‘Valve Corporation’ and/or ‘Ambrosia Software Inc’ In the Security & Privacy system settings.”

This will open my System Preferences window. I then select the Security and Privacy Icon, it is selected to General and I do not see the usual Allow prompt I would see for these kind of stuff. If I click ok on the previous prompt it will finish the installation saying success, however if I start up big picture of steam link it will request I install the driver again.

I have tried turning off SIP and enabling installing untrusted apps from any source. Neither seem to have resolved this issue.

Probably a compatibility issue with MacOS Big Sur, Maybe you should downgrade to Catalina or a previous version of Mac.

A lot of compatibility-issues with Steam or games on Steam have been found with Mac OS Big Sur since the beta release, I would assume these may be fixed by Apple when it’s out of beta.

However, I can’t really say anything for sure, I don’t own a Macbook.

We should wait until Valve / Steam is going to adjust their system to work natively on the M1.

Yes, it’s a compatibility issue, but kind of from both sides (Apple and Valve). In Big Sur aren’t any kernel extensions, which is the way Valve implemented the controller support. So unfortunately we need to wait for Valve to release

a) a new version of the Controller Input
b) Release a native version for Apple Silicon which also then will work in another way (instead of the kernel extension)

I can’t use my Switch Pro controller and DS4 on M1 Mac mini with steam.

The steam app reminded me to install a driver named steam input, but I tried so many times that it can’t be installed.

All controllers can use for the steam app itself, but can’t play games like Stardew Valley.

The trouble is that even with a controller that is natively supported on the M1 machines, it won’t actually work within the games. It does not matter which type. I have an N30 Pro 2, which has four modes. Each is actually supported by the computer (MacBook Air 2020) but rendered useless by Steam. Why they have not recompiled, I have no idea. The tools are very available.

Kernel extensions have been deprecated since macOS Big Sur. Therefore, the driver is useless. Apple already has native support for the XBOX One and DualShock 4 controllers. Why not just buy and use one of those? I highly doubt Apple is going to make a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller driver. Those things don’t even have analog triggers.

Failed to install Steam-Input too, M1 MacBook Pro. I see the new Xbox Series Controller is native supported by Mac, it works well in browser, could play the google’s in-browser game.

But i can not play any steam games, some games like Stardew Valley, all controller keys not works, And some games like Super Bit Blaster XL, only direction keys works.

Для тех, кто несколько раз сносил стим и не может найти путь /Application Support/Steam/registry.vdf.

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles 1 && killall Finder
