Как запускать 32-битные приложения в macOS Catalina

Перед выходом macOS Catalina мы рассказывали о важном изменении этой операционной системы.

Купертиновцы прекратили поддержку 32-битных программ. Все приложения без соответствующего апдейта просто не заработают в macOS 10.15 и более поздних версиях операционной системы от Apple.

Чтобы продолжить их использовать, самый лучший метод — просто поставить предыдущую версию macOS на виртуальную машину. Сейчас объясню, как это сделать.

Какие 32-битные приложения вообще могут понадобиться

У каждого пользователя список свой. Мне, например, не хватает четырёх программ, которыми я часто пользовался вплоть до macOS Mojave.

Больше не поддерживаются: удобный переключатель языка ввода по клавише CapsLock – Capster, стриминговый плеер SopCast, приложение для цифрового микроскопа Digital Viewer и программа для работы с трехмерными моделями конструктора Lego Digital Designer.

От первых двух пришлось отказаться полностью, а второй паре нашел 64-битные аналоги: Plugable Digital Viewer и Studio 2.0.

На несколько месяцев я забыл о проблеме с 32-битными приложениями, пока во время новогодних каникул не решил поиграть во что-то на своем Mac.

Да, компьютеры Apple не позиционируются как геймерские. Но есть множество приложений и игр 5-7 летней давности, которые отлично работают даже на Mac mini и MacBook Air без дискретной графики.

Купленные давным-давно DiRT 3, Borderlands и Mafia II пропали с виртуальных полок Mac App Store. Нет там и старых любимых платформеров, вроде Trine.

Не порадовал визит в раздел с играми для Mac на сайте Steam.

На странице большинства купленных ранее игр красовался баннер об отсутствии поддержки Catalina.

Что же теперь делать

Если вам необходимо запустить 32-битные приложения, а компьютер уже обновлен до macOS Catalina, есть такие варианты выхода из ситуации:

▸ установить macOS Mojave в качестве второй системы на Mac;

▸ установить Windows через BootCamp и использовать программы или игры для этой ОС;

▸ дождаться обновления контейнера Wine для запуска 32-битных приложений. Работа ведется, но есть определенные трудности и четкие сроки выхода такой версии разработчики пока не называют.

▸ использовать виртуальную машину с установленной системой macOS Mojave и ниже.

Последний способ самый предпочтительный, так не придется перезагружать компьютер и запускать другую операционную систему, чтобы запустить нужное приложение.

Как установить macOS Mojave на виртуальную машину

1. Для начала определимся с используемым приложением. Можете выбрать любое популярное решение: VMWare, VirtualBox или Parallels.

В данном примере будем использовать утилиту Parallels Desktop, в других программах процесс установки будет схожим.

2. Теперь нужно скачать подходящую версию macOS. Купертиновцы любезно скрыли старые версии macOS и их нельзя найти через поиск в Mac App Store.

К счастью, можно воспользоваться прямыми ссылками: скачать macOS 10.14 Mojave или macOS 10.13 High Sierra.

3. Запускаем приложение для создания виртуальной машины и через меню Файл – Новый создаем новую систему.

4. Выбираем пункт Установить Windows или другую ОС с DVD или из образа.

5. Подтверждаем установку из загруженного образа macOS или вручную указываем путь к инсталлятору.

6. Подтверждаем выделение необходимого места на диске под образ системы.

7. Производим привычную установку и настройку macOS в окне виртуальной машины.

8. После установки в настройках виртуальной машины не забываем предоставить доступ к сети и оборудованию компьютера. При необходимости следует изменить предоставляемые виртуальной машине ресурсы (оперативную и видеопамять).

И в самом конце предоставляем доступ ко всем дискам или выделенным папкам на Mac, чтобы быстро копировать данные между основной системой и виртуальной.

9. Перезапускаем виртуальную машину для вступления изменений в силу.

Все! Теперь можно устанавливать и использовать старые 32-битные приложения.

На данный момент это самый удобный способ использовать нужные программы и игры, поддержка которых пропала в macOS Catalina.

Mac OS Catalina 10.15 is going to be the first Mac OS to only support 64-bit. Steam is not going to work for Mac OS 10.15 because the client cannot benefit itself to 32-bit and it has not been optimised to 64-bit, now you have been warned that whenever you have updated the Mac OS to 10.15 Steam will cease to work and then all the Mac users will be extremely upset so please stop the updates after you get to Mojave.

Honestly, you do my copy steam_osx over the top of an older version trick, and it works just fine.

I will be very surprised indeed if this isn’t sorted by default for everyone before Catalina comes out. The bigger issue is the number of games that don’t have 64-bit binaries.

Also it seems like there’s a bug which makes game launches not work right. This is why you don’t run beta OSes, kids.

It is very, very far from irretrievably broken. And running a developer-only beta of a new OS always leads to stuff being broken. Backblaze pops up an error message every once in a while because of changes Catalina makes to filesystem layout. DaisyDisk is pretty broken. I’m only running Catalina because I am myself a developer. Normal people really should just wait until it properly comes out later this year, and if Steam is still a little broken when Catalina is actually properly released, then there’ll be cause for concern.

Steam works for Catalina already. When you upgrade to Catalina, your currently installed Steam version will not work. Delete it and re-download the app from Steam. It downloads a working version then.

However, many games (including 64-bit ones) seem not to work yet. Of course, as others have mentioned, do not use betas as your primary operating system.

I just installed Catalina and could not open my previously installed Steam. However, I downloaded the latest version and installed it and it opened up without a problem. I agree with other posters and say wait for the final release to condemn Steam to Mac death. The running application does show the «can’t run this app» icon, but it is running. (Wierd.)

Huh — I just tried to launch a game (Cities: Skylines) and it says app running but the window never opened. Give Valve some time to iron out the issues with the new OS and I’m sure things will work out. Or, there will be lots of people calling 800-MYAPPLE and complaining, I’d imagine.

Nevermind — the game did finally open. It just took a REALLY long time to do so.

EDIT: Steam updated itself and when it relaunched, the Dock icon refreshed itself and the «can not run app» icon went away.

Apple has announced that with macOS 11, they will begin to phase-out 32bit applications. This process should begin sometime in January 2018.

In checking my computer, I see that the Steam Client and the games it installs are all 32bit.

When will we start to see an update to the client and games?

The 64bit client doesn’t matter, as it doesn’t use more then 4 gigs of ram. All it does is launch games, and its up to the game devs/publishers to make their games 64bit, so go ask them. But seeing as how most games do not even come close to using 4 gigs of ram, don’t count on them moving to 64bit any time soon.

Well.. Isn’t that going to be sad for you? Though how many Mac Games are 64bit?
First off, I’m sure steam will make a 64 bit client when the OS launches & their old client won’t launch.

Secondly, you baboon. the developers & Publishers, That’s right. THOSE PEOPLE of their respective games HAVE TO PUT IN THE WORK TO MAKE IT 64bit.

Third, if the list of MacOS games that are 64bit, happens to be a tiny fraction of what’s actually on offer, or near the single digits, there might be a chance that 64bit OS for Mac is SOL for a while, and suddenly a 64bit windows running in that parrellal mode of yours, will be your best friend. (as windows isn’t likely to dump x86 support, until the CPU’s no longer support it, and even then it’ll take years & time for 32bit to not be used)

Obviously there’s nothing Valve can do directly about third-party games, but given that Apple are going to phase out 32-bit, getting moving on a 64-bit Steam client for macOS is not unreasonable. The overwhelming majority of software for Mac is 64-bit; out of the several hundred processes I currently have running, a grand total of 8 of them are 32-bit, and two of those are Steam. Even Steam’s own webhelpers are 64-bit!

If Valve wanted to be even more proactive, they could warn developers currently only shipping 32-bit binaries for macOS that they ought to update.

The problem is if you are like me who has bought games from Steam over a decade ago, most of those game publishers/developers have no plans or capability to upgrade their games from 32-bit to 64 bit. They will simply cease to work even with a Steam 64-bit client. Steam should have made a migration tool so that after a clean install one could have all the games identified as 64 bit migrated over to the new Steam 64-bit launcher.

Game developers like Standing Stones Games (the developers of Dungeons and Dragons Online) have gone down the path of using a Wine Client (Windows Emulator) client but the pre-loader of Wine is still only 32-bit (and no date is given for when the 64 bit version will be ready). So expect most games, especially older ones not to work any more. 🙁

This has nothing to do with Steam 64-bit launcher. Apple dropped 32-bit support on the operating system.

Games can’t be just converted on the fly to 64-bit. So no sort of mitigation tool is possible.

64-bit WINE can not run 32-bit programs. Only 32-bit WINE can. 32-bit WINE requires 32-bit support. Apple has dropped support for 32-bit. So WINE is not an option.

You have four choices:
-Use a virtual machine running Windows or Linux. This is significantly slower and may not work with all games.
-Use bootcamp to install Windows
-Install Linux on your machine and actually enjoy controlling your own machine.
-Suck it up and lose the majority of your library, so Apple can save a few dollars in support costs. You bought into a walled garden ecosystem. You live with a walled garden ecosystem.

Your beef is with Apple, not developers or Steam. Also as Metal rolls out in a few versions, most of your games will no longer work as well.
