StuffIt Deluxe – некогда популярный архиватор для Mac OS X. C архиватором Stuffit вы сможете открывать и создавать архивы CAB, GZIP, LZH, MIME, PF, RAR, SIT, TAR, UU, UUE, ZIP и конечно, SIT – практический стереотип архивирования в MacOS, также новейший формат сжатия – StuffIt X. Помимо этого, программа открывает файлы ARC, PAK, ARJ, и BinHex (HQX). Из принципиальных особенностей следует отметить модульный принцип построения – по сути Stuffit считается не одной программой, а комплектом программ.

Очередная специфика – возможность криптостойкого шифрования архивов. Программа выпускается в нескольких улучшениях, при этом лично занимательной в Deluxe-версии утилитой, отсутствующей в обычном варианте, считается Stuffit Express, дозволяющая автоматизировать выполнение некой очередности команд: например, заархивировать такие-то файлы и выслать их на FTP-сервер, после этого разослать по таким-то адресатам послания, оповещающие про то, собственно архив доступен для загрузки.

StuffIt Deluxe is a highly intuitive, versatile, expandable, high-speed, file compressor and scanner that is suitable for both PC and Mac use. StuffIt Expander is a free, open source, compressed, decompression tool for use on Mac OS X and the more popular Windows operating systems. It runs primarily on the older Mac OS, ios, and newer Microsoft Windows.

StuffIt Deluxe offers four primary functions: compressing archives containing scanned files, converting documents into PDFs or TIFF files using Adobe’s own PDF viewer, creating «zipped» archives using zipped files, and exporting documents as PDF or JPEG from multiple computer systems. It is easy to use, has a simple interface, is compatible with most scanning and print processes, has many advanced features including customizable options, and is very fast and reliable. The latest version, StuffIt Ultimate, has even more features and added capabilities.

StuffIt Deluxe can be used for several purposes. It can be used to compress archives containing scanned files in either JPEG or PDF format, which can save a great deal of time when creating large documents. If you want to convert a document into a PDF or TIFF, StuffIt Deluxe is able to do this quickly and easily. For transferring files between a Mac and Windows machine, a person can connect the computer and the web, choose a good destination for the compressed files, and upload the files to the destination through the web browser. The user can then access the compressed files from the desktop of the Mac or from the Windows desktop without having to convert the file first.

Needs legacy support

How or why this app does’t have support for the original SIT format is beyond me. This is the only company that has rights to it and they refuse to allow one to extract or create SIT files. Every single SIT i’ve tried to open with this fails. Same on the iOS app. Please, look at the reviews, hear what people are asking for and add support for legacy SIT files.

A historical archive expander but maintained

Way back in the day when computer storage was extremely limited and very expensive, compression archivers like ZIP were practically essential. In the late 1980s, StuffIt was invented and became one of the major players, esp. on Mac. While the current owner of Stuffit (Smith Micro) determined that StuffIt had reached end of life in 2019, they still maintain this expander application to open any StuffIt archives (typically with a SIT or SITX extension) plus it will open common formats like ZIP., RAR, and TAR. A tip of the hat to Smith Micro for not only maintaining the expander but optimizing it for the new M1.

You had one job!

I hadn’t needed to extract much else than zip files so never needed a utility like this until today where I needed to extract a .rar file someone sent me. I remembered the name Stuffit from back in the day and go figure, they’re still around with a version 16 product. I gave it a try and it fails to do the one thing I downloaded this program for. It said there was something wrong with the .rar file and couldn’t open it. Reading some of the other reviews, I go and download The Unarchiver and guess what? It opens right away with no issues.

Stuffit, you had one job. You’re at version 16! No time for you, the nostalgia isn’t going to cut it. Unistalled.

Powerful file compressor and expander

Stuffit is one of the most well known file compressors and expanders for Mac. It can handle over 30 file formats including RAR, 7zip, split and segmented archives.

StuffIt Deluxe is the most advanced version of Stuffit yet allowing you to browse and preview archives before taking action and selectively extract just the files you want. StuffIt Deluxe can even browse encoded archives and compressed tarball files with no need to decompress it first. Stuffit Deluxe is particularly useful for those Mac users that need to send archives to Windows users because archives are free of any extraneous Mac data that might affect opening on Windows.

To preview archives before decompressing, you can use the StuffIt Quick Look plugin (which requires at least OS X 10.5 to work) and preview contents in Finder. The same goes for archives in Apple Mail and even TimeMachine archives. Stuffit Deluxe has also been especially designed with images in mind as it includes special preview plugins for images in iPhoto and Aperture. It allows you to archive huge collections to save disk space but still allow you to upload them to the internet.

Apart from archiving, Stuffit Deluxe also features many bonus elements. One is that it can create disk images in a few easy steps using MagicMenu or the StuffIt Contextual Menu. A handy feature called DropStuff also allows you to create drop zones with set preferences so that you can zip or decompress archives using the same settings everytime. In addition to this, there is a backup scheduler, integration with MacFUSE and an mini-install creator called SEA Maker that allows you to create your own installers.

What is StuffIt Deluxe 1.5.x — 8.x?

StuffIt was the most versatile and used compression suite on the Mac since 1987. It began as shareware and then it went commercial but StuffIt Expander (the decompression tool) always remained free and was even bundled by Apple on Mac OS release CD-ROM’s starting from the mid-90’s, coinciding with the popularity of the internet in homes. It became so much of an essential tool when downloading basically *anything* from the internet. Macintosh applications (and most documents) all contain resource forks which are not binary safe nor transfered using standard FTP or HTTP tools such as web browsers. Therefore, StuffIt took care of bundling resource forks along with the binary data constituting the file and allowed for uploading/downloading from or to a web server. It also took care of storing such Mac files on a Windows computer for instance. This .sit format stayed forever the #1 choice for archiving old Macintosh files/applications whereas .zip format became the standard on Windows computers.
