How to Install openSUSE Leap 15 on VMware Workstation 15/14

In this article, we will setup openSUSE Leap 15 on a virtual machine using VM Workstation 14/15 Pro in Windows 10 step by step.

How to Install openSUSE Leap 15 on VMware 14/15 Pro

OpenSUSE Leap 15 released on May 25, 2018. You can install and use it on a desktop or laptop computer.

The most recent version of the VMware Workstation virtualization program is 15 Pro. After you create a virtual machine on VMware Workstation, you can install many Linux-based operating systems. In our previous articles, we installed Linux based Ubuntu , Linux Mint , Debian with VMware.

How to Run openSUSE Leap 15 on Virtual Machine in PC

After completing the necessary preparations, you need to create a VM using VMware . You can select openSUSE 64 Bit in the operating system selection window in the steps for creating a VM.

Follow the instructions below to setup it on the VM using VMware Workstation 14/15 Pro.

Step 1

Open VMware Workstation/Player 14/15 Pro and click Create a New Virtual Machine to create a new VM.

Step 2

In the VM creation window, select Custom (advanced) and click on the Next button.

Step 3

Select Workstation.x for VMware hardware compatibility and click Next.

Step 4

To add the ISO file to the VM later, select I will install the operating system later and click Next.

Step 5

For SUSE operating system option, select SUSE Linux 64-bit and click Next.

Step 6

Running openSUSE Leap 15 on VMware is a good idea, but running the virtual machine on a different disk means you get more performance.

We even recommend you to use SSD disks to use Windows, Linux, and MacOS on virtual machines.

To change the VM location on VMware, click the Browse button.

Step 7

In the opened window, select your USB 3.0 External Drive and click OK after creating a new folder.

After changing the VM installation location, click Next to continue.

Step 9

For the openSUSE VM, 1 processor / 1 core will suffice in the processor configuration window. You can adjust the processor configuration according to the characteristics of your computer.

After configuring the openSUSE processor requirement, click on the Next button.

Likewise, you can set the RAM requirement to a higher value, depending on the hardware specifications of your computer. For SUSE Linux, 2 GB of RAM will suffice. Click on the Next button to continue with the instructions for preparing the openSUSE virtual machine.

Step 11

Select NAT for the openSUSE VM that will run on VMware and click Next.

Step 12

Select LSI Logic (Recommended) and click on the Next button.

Step 13

In the Virtual Disk Type setup window, select SCSI (Recommended) and click Next.

Step 14

To create a new virtual disk, select Create a new virtual disk and click Next.

Step 15

Select the Store virtual disk as single file option and click Next.

Step 16

Click the Next button to continue with the default setting in the openSUSE disk file configuration window.

Step 17

Click the Customize Hardware button.

Step 18

Enable Accelerate 3D graphics for Display configuration.

Step 19

To add the ISO file to the VM, select CD/DVD and select the Use ISO image file option then click the Browse button.

Step 20

Select the ISO file you downloaded to your computer and click on the Open button.

Step 21

Click the Close button to save the changes you have made.

Step 22

The summary information of the VM is in the following window. Click the Finish button.

Step 23

After creating the machine for SUSE Linux on VMware Workstation 14, click on Power on this virtual machine to start the VM and start the setup.
