[Feature Request] Screen sharing is of somewhat low quality #16487

Comments

p0358 commented Jun 26, 2021 •

The screen sharing quality is a bit lower than expected, the text is blurry/low quality and somewhat hard to read.
[tested on Linux and Windows 10 VM, with 3D acceleration available and not respectively]

Describe the solution you’d like

It would be good if we could see a better quality in screensharing. I’m not sure of the technicalities, framerate is already low too. Perhaps the resolution could be increased, with screen sharing there’s usually less data to send than with camera data, unless someone decides to stream something like a game or a video. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still very grateful Telegram finally has that feature, only suggesting it could be looked into this concern in some free time.

Describe alternatives you’ve considered

On the lookout I’ve compared Telegram’s quality to other solutions. In Discord, the quality in default free 720p setting is very similar, maybe a tad better. It’s much better and clear in higher resolutions available with Nitro subscription. With apps like Skype and Microsoft Teams, the quality is clear, though I think Skype had a better one. Remote control apps/protocols like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, RDP, VNC, all tend to have a crystal clear image quality, some may suffer is there’s a lot of motion going on. Free Jitsi Meet in the browser has much clearer image too.
(Personally though I’ll probably still stick to Telegram, because it has a better voice quality than for example Discord, and using two communication apps at once is meh and not really needed anymore)

Additional context

As far as I know Discord is using regular H.264. Many of the other mentioned platforms surely use different codecs for desktop, some use custom-designed ones for their purpose. It might be hard to adapt them, given people may want to stream dynamic content like video too. Perhaps a solution like resolution increase or a tradeoff settings between resolution and framerate (to maintain similar bitrate, cause I assume that’s the limitation) could be introduced, as Discord appears to have a big perceived quality increase on higher resolutions, though we don’t really see what bitrate settings are tied to their presets. However if we trust their statistics screen, they seem to use variable bitrate, and when you screenshare something there where not much is happening on the screen, the bitrate flow is very low. It might be a part of changes they introduced as part of updates for quarantine times, where people started using the thing more for whiteboard sharing rather than gaming, not sure about that part though.

I’m encouraging others to share their thoughts about this, maybe it may turn out it’s only an issue on my side for example

Can confirm this, similar behaviour is seen here.

JoshuaDietz commented Oct 18, 2018 •

+1
Did anyone of you find a workaround to solve this? Maybe reinstalling telegram or deleting some configs?

Serphentas commented Oct 18, 2018

I think I haven’t had this problem since a few updates, can’t say for sure.

JoshuaDietz commented Oct 18, 2018

As it happend to me for the first time after I killed Telegram via taskmanager I think some config may be corrupted. If I install Telegram on another user profile everything works. Does anyone know where Telegram stores configs on linux so that I can reinstall it from scratch?

JoshuaDietz commented Oct 18, 2018

Okay I resolved it. The solution was to delete the folder where Telegram stores everything. On Debian that’s

Wouldn’t you lose some local configurations (or other stuff) by doing this ?

RememberTheAir commented Oct 21, 2018 •

I had a similar problem that forced me to delete a file to restore my screen ratio. Deleting that file might fix your problem too, I described what happens here

Serphentas commented Oct 21, 2018

Thanks for the input, I’ll try when it happens again.

JoshuaDietz commented Oct 21, 2018

Yes, you will be logged out and lose everything you configured. Since there are not that many configuration options I took that 2 minutes to log in again and configure everything properly after that. But yes, the solution is not good. But still better than a telegram client which blocks your whole screen ;D

iqbalfn commented Feb 18, 2019

/.local/share/TelegramDesktop/tdata/settings1 while the app closed is also fix the problem without logging out.

WPFilmmaker commented Dec 18, 2019

I still have this issue on Lubuntu 18.04 and Telegram 1.8.15.
I accidentally entered fullscreen mode and now I am stuck there. First, how do you toggle/untoggle fullscreen normally?which shortcut?

Second in /home/myusername/.local/share there is no file called settings1 🙁

I tried /usr/share but there is no telegram folder either.

Sharing and Previews

In addition to a major update to our Bot Platform, we’re making several design and interface improvements to our apps today. This post mostly shows iOS screenshots, but be sure to check out the massive Android redesign we did in this version.

Starting today, our iOS users can easily share photos and videos to other Telegram chats with a comment, or send them to other apps.

New sharing menu

Open in other apps

We’ve also added a new slick in-app media player so that you can watch videos from YouTube and other services in style. It will also take you fewer taps to start watching.

New in-app video player

Adding new sticker packs has become easier. Tapping on any sticker in a chat will now instantly open the relevant sticker pack. You can preview and send stickers right from this menu. Now you won’t have to teach your grandparents how to add stickers.

View sticker pack

On iOS, ‘Tap and hold to preview’ also works with GIFs in the GIF panel. Pull up for additional actions.

The same is true for content from inline bots. Tap and hold to preview results suggested by inline bots before sending. Try it now with @gif, @sticker or @coub.

Don’t worry, this is coming soon to Android too! Speaking of which…

The Android app received a major tuneup in the design department. We’ve redesigned the chat screen, optimized the colors, reimagined buttons and message bubbles, created beautiful progress bars, fully revamped documents and other attachments.

We’ve also improved the design of our iOS app, adding juicy progress bars and a new look for documents. Telegram Desktop has also received multiple design improvements and now fully supports the new bots.

Yes, don‘t forget that in addition to the above we’re introducing the biggest update to our bot platform since June 2015 today. Read more about Bots 2.0 »
