To make script work you need to enable Proton support for all titles.
You can do that with heading to Settings —> Steam Play —> Enable Steam Play for all other titles.
Then restart Steam and you can proceed with installation since game isn’t Valve tested.

Endnight created a dedicated server for The Forest but refused to make it Linux compatible, or even add a window-less mode for that sake. This makes it incredibly difficult for people to host it, since headless Linux servers are quite common.
Luckily with Wine and Xvfb we can make it work just fine.
Keep in mind that even on Windows the server is pretty buggy, so running it in Wine certainly won’t help.

In order to start the server, cd into the directory that has the file TheForestDedicatedServer.exe. You can use either of these commands. Keep in mind that even though the parameter savefolderpath is optional, you have to set configfilepath.
Once you close your terminal or SSH client the server will stop.
- You should log in with your Steam account in the server config, otherwise you’ll run into trouble saving players. Do so as told in the official guide.
- You should forward the ports 8766, 27015 and 27016. The commands below will only work if you don’t have any other firewall software and are not behind a router.

This is not a place to ask for help about your config, it should be the same as on Windows so you can follow other guides about that. This guide shows how to install a Windows Forest server and how to run it, you’ve got to fill in the blanks yourself.
@Kamenzee if you can connect dont worry about it. The server is incredibly unstable, but it works.
I was running a dedicated server last year without any problems. I had to migrate to a new server and a fresh ubuntu 20.04 installation.
With an identical installation of the deicated server with wine-stable the server doesn’t start properly.
Here is what the server output looks like:

Currently quite playable with wine in 32 and 64 bit flavors. However, there is one disastrous bug that pretty much kills game play. YOU CAN NOT SAVE!.
When attempting to save, game throws an exception:
This results in not being able to save the games current state, and you can not sleep. I have not yet found a workaround yet. Might try pre-creating a symlink from the file listed to a more «user friendly» directory such as users/me/appdata and see if that makes it easier.
I’m not sure, though, if that is a temporary file or the actual save file, but if it IS permanent then, even on Windows, multiple users of the same system will not be able to play.
I hope one of the devs reads these forums, or someone who has had success in saving while playing on Linux can shed some light on a solution. I will continue to work the problem and post any results.

UPDATE: Fix is simple. Create the directory structure in your wine prefix.
mkdir users/username/AppData
mkdir users/username/AppData/LocalLow
mkdir users/username/AppData/LocalLow/SKS
mkdir users/username/AppData/LocalLow/SKS/TheForest
And viola. It will now save, advance time, and rest you.
This might actually work for windows users too that are experiencing problems with saving if the registry fix I’ve seen elsewhere doesn’t work.
I will note this at least works for my 64bit prefix.. I have not tried in my 32bit prefix.
