The Long Dark
Игра The Long Dark предоставлена вам компанией Hinterland Studio — независимым разработчиком игр, где работают ветераны индустрии, участвовавшие в создании многих известных серий, включая Far Cry, Red Faction, Saints Row, God of War, Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Company of Heroes и т. д.

It works fine on my mid-2012 MacBook Pro (2.3 GHz i7-3615QM) with both the integrated HD 4000 (low settings, 1440×900) or the 512 MB GT 650M (medium settings on OS X and Ultra on Windows) running OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 + Windows 7 Professional x64.
You should update to Yosemite, OP. It’s free from the App Store and it doesn’t break anything as far as I know. Aperture works (though it has been succeeded by the superior Photos for OS X in 10.10.3 release), Office 2011 is flawless and so are all other Apple apps on my non-Retina laptop, so I think you will be just fine with it.
I need to get the El Capitan beta, but it didn’t want to install because of my hybrid partition setup. If you were sticking to Snow Leopard I would understand, as it has PowerPC emulation but there’s just no reason to stick with Lion, at this point it’s both outdated and crippled by old drivers and lack of support.
I have a mid2010 macbook and the game runs okay-ish on a low res and medium-high settings. For some reason I had overheating issues and low framerate and then all of a sudden a few days ago I’ve had butter smooth performance and no overheating. I dunno.
Get something called smcFanControl. It’s really handy! If you use Windows, the equivalent is called Lubbo’s Fan Control. Crank its fans up to 6200rpm and enjoy throttle free gaming, it actually allows my own MBP to reach 1058 MHz on the GPU under Windows. Another really great app is gfxCardStatus, which will allow you to force either the integrated or dedicated graphics card if your Mac has 2 different video cards. Gets a little loud but fixes overheating 🙂
Using integrated when you’re just browsing the web or playing lighter games will make it heat less and substantially increase battery life. You wouldn’t believe how some pretty stupid things like YouTube videos turn on the dedicated GPU, which the integrated can easily handle.

I’ve seen a number of people ask where the save game location is on these forums and while people provide the location under Windows, I’ve not yet seen anyone post the location of save games for Mac / OS X platforms. I spent a few minutes tracking it down this morning, first thinking it would probably be somewhere in the Steam folder, but to no avail.
I finally found the save game files stored in a directory affiliated with the Unity 3D game engine on OS X (10.9.4) platform at:
/Users/ /Library/Caches/unity.Hinterland.The Long Dark
(I’ve read that the Windows location is at: C:\Users\YOUR_COMPUTER_NAME\AppData\LocalLow\Hinterland\The Long Dark\alpha_slot0002)
I was able to backup the entire folder, clear it, start a new game, clear it, restore my previous backup just fine. (the user0 file contains your preference settings, so you may wanna keep that)
I often want to backup my previous save games so I can explore new content and even explore glitches without putting my game at risk, and none of this is involves save scumming.
From a development standpoint, I think if the game supported multiple game slots (like having 3 — 5 active games at a time, not multiple saves per game), it would be much much easier for people to document and submit bugs and to experiment in general. Previously I had been very nervous to explore some glitched mechanics (fall off the map, weird inventory glitches, experiments with wolves, etc) because I was afraid of losing the game I had spent HOURS on.
I like the permadeath aspect of the game, it helps ratchet up the tension and immersion. However, when new versions or content are added to the game, I’d love to be able to easily explore and experiment with the new release in a new save slot.
The v.152 update was crazy with the wolves (kudos for the insanely fast fix/patch afterwards!) that had a bit of a learning curve I would have prefered to explored with a new game, allowing me to return to my previous loooong running game when the dust had settled with the v.155 update.
Overall, I love this game. I love zombies, but its great to have a break from them. I’m looking forward to things in the future like the occasional mountain lion, bear or even more deadly, other humans. Enjoy! 🙂
theronguard, I’ve read that it is at: C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\LocalLow\Hinterland\The Long Dark\alpha_slot0002) where you need to substitute YOUR_USER_NAME with whatever your user name on that computer is. I don’t have access to a Windows computer currently with TLD installed to confirm, but good luck!

The Long Dark
which Mac, which OS X, which grafic card?
Need to list specs for your mac and windows for anyone to compare. But yes, it’s no secret that games often suffer from performance hits on macs since they’re often running additional software to get the game moving.
That being said, the game runs fine for me on a three year old macbook pro, so having specs might help narrow the issue down.
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014)
Processor: 2,6 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris 1536 MB
Running the game on Medium settings & works fine, anything above that is making it lagg like crazy.
Never played on a good computer so dont really know what Im missing out on & thats why Im happy as it is hehehe
Hi Kotowski. We are certainly always working to improve how the game runs on different systems, and have some adjustments coming in the next update.
That said, can you describe what you are seeing in more detail? Are you experiencing a lower framerate? Are areas taking a long time to load? Are you seeing crashes or graphics glitching?
If you haven’t done so recently, try rebooting your system and checking that your Mac is updated.
Adjusting the ingame display and quality settings can sometimes improve framerate, such as turning off Vsync or playing in Window Mode.
Well, I don’t know how, but it starting gliches when I walk on ice. Also weather conditions like heavy snow slower fps.
Compared to other games on macos (wargame red dragon, total war) this game optimization is bad.

The Long Dark for Mac
Softonic review
Explore the quiet apocalypse
The Long Dark is an adventure survival game developed by a small independent studio, Hinterland Studio Inc. It is an exploration game that will have you venture into a long survival journey. In this game, zombies are not only your enemy. You will also battle yourself, the cold, and all the possible threats from mother nature. This survival simulation game is played in single-player mode. You will singlehandedly explore the expansive frozen wilderness after a geomagnetic disaster and see how long you can survive and if you can make it till the end.
Play in various game modes
The Long Dark comes with three playable modes. The Wintermute mode serves as the game’s episodic story mode. It contains five-long episodes that focus on Dr. Astrid Greenwood and the bush pilot named Will Mackenzie’s relationship as well as their struggles to survive. The first two episodes, Do Not Go Gentle and Luminance Fugue, were firstly released and redux with a new mission structure, story beats, dialogue, animations, etc. Afterward, Crossroads Elegy, the third episode was also released a few months after the two episodes To complete the story, episodes four and five will be published at a later date.
In the survival mode, your only goal is to survive. Bear in mind that this mode features permadeath. When death comes upon you, your saved game is deleted entirely, and you have to begin from the start if you want to try your chances once again. This mode is survival of the fittest. You’ll have to scour the world for over 100 gear items, search for life-saving food, and monitor your hunger, thirst, fatigue, and cold. Survival mode offers diverse Experience modes, which give you the option to choose the game difficulty you are comfortable with, it ranges from the easiest mode named Pilgrim, followed by Voyageur, Stalker, and the hardest mode, Interloper.
Moreover, The Long Dark also offers five shorter challenge modes that can be played for 1 to 3 hours each. One of the challenges here is called Hunted. You need to escape a murderous Bear. Once you succeed in completing the game, you will be able to unlock a feat that will be beneficial for you, especially in the long-term gameplay of Survival mode.
One for the books survival game
The Long Dark is a breath of fresh air in the survival game world as here your enemy is yourself and nature rather than the usual zombies and other unidentified creatures. This is an adventure strategy game that you should try out. You won’t be bored as it has a lot of game modes and features to offer. The exploration-survival game satisfaction that you are longing for will definitely suffice in this game.
