The witcher linux steam
Nothing in the web seems to help me so far, because witcher 1 was played on linux through playonlinux so save was deep inside POL folders, while wicher 2 is run through linux native steam client. I did move witcher 1 save to the folder of witcher 2, namely:
But game still claims not to have any previous game saves. So where do I put it for it to see? Why can’t I just browse my computer and point the file? It’s so irritating.
EDIT:
I found the solution in my second post. However, the original topic is from 2016, so before Proton and my solution is obsolete. I marked one of the answers as solution, because it reflects better today’s need to port saves from Witcher1 played through Proton.
It’s 2,5 years later, and I’d just like to add: if you’ve played The Witcher 1 on Linux through Proton and want to use your end-game savegames from that in The Witcher 2 you can take the following steps:
1.) Create The Witcher 1 savegame directory that is discoverable by The Witcher 2:
2.) Copy actual savegame files from The Witcher 1 to that newly created directory:
/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/20900/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My\ Documents/The\ Witcher/saves/*
That’s it. When you launch The Witcher 2, you should now be able to start a new game and use a Witcher 1 savegame of your choice to start the game with.
This is assuming that your Witcher 1 version is ‘The Witcher Enhanced Edition’ (app no. 20900). If you’ve played a different version, change the application number in the savegame source path accordingly.
Hope this helps anyone, cost me about 2 hours to figure this out :p
Finally found the answer:

Witcher 1 has never been released for Linux.
The second game is the only on that has been. It was somewhat poorly received, however, since it was not a native port which might have turned CDPR off from porting the other games.
The third game at one point was rumored to have a Linux port planned, but nothing ever came of it.
Whether or not the first and third game will ever be ported is unknown, but at this point seems unlikely. Doesn’t hurt to ask, though.
Developers can make official port in a couple of days. So, I really don’t understand why it isn’t released yet.
understand this: they don’t care. that’s all there is to it.
Really? All of them? Or some of them? Hardly don’t care or a little bit? And why are you so sure about this guys?
It’s an easy way to earn some money from linux users.

They have zero interest in doing anything Witcher related now. They’re done with the series. Get it? Apart from Gwent Online, of course, since they still can squeeze some money from it.
>Get it?
I’ve got YOUR OPINION about the developers and I just can’t agree with it.
Of course, I’ve read the news about their copyrighted Cyberpunk. But, screw down Wine to the Witcher it’s just so easy.
Gwent Online is DOA, IMHO. PTW is not inviting, at least for me. And even to start playing you’ll have to register on their site, which is not very good idea, It’s not attached to gog or steam accounts. It’s just not a clever move.
Actually, GOG version runs pretty well via playonlinux and wine 2.11.

Before the Witcher 3 release, there was a Linux announcement on Steam!
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTcxMzc
Now CDPR has the preorder money from the Linux guys and they say «get the ♥♥♥♥ off, we know nothing».
@CursedPanther
Why are you posting missinformation?
The announcement was in error and was quickly removed. How long are you guys going to keep rehashing this. There are NO plans for a Linux version.
Get over it already.
The announcement was in error and was quickly removed.
Put it this way. One day it was there. A few scant hours later it was removed. Not days or weeks later but hours. Steam made an error.
You want a link from CDPR saying no Linux version? I’ll search for one. It’s ridiculous that we need to keep going over this again and again but fine.
Well after searching for some time and limiting references to only recent comments instead of trying to revive year-old+ comments, this is what I’ve found:
The most recent comments here are from 2 months ago. CDPR never provides any additional information as to whether they plan to release a Linux version in the future. Even on Twitch, the most they’ll say is that they can’t answer anything to do with a Linux version.
Speculation runs toward legal issues in Poland if they were to do so.
But given more recent events, the wrapping up of all things Witcher in order to move forward completely on Cyberpunk 2077, it’s looking less likely by the minute. As is evident by patch 1.12, there are still plenty of things that need to be addressed with the base game and they have yet to announce a release date for the final expansion, Blood and Wine, which will most likley require yet another patch. The game itself may see one or two additional patches before it’s finally laid to rest.
Does it really seem practical or even feasible at this point to continue hoping and begging for a Linux release? The Steam banner was a mistake. It was yanked and never again posted. No mention has ever been made by CDPR officially regarding a release.
It’s just not going to happen.
As for the Steam ad, found several similar threads regarding other games where Steam incorrectly plastered banners ads which were later removed because they were incorrect. The thing is what matters is what CDPR says and now, eight months after the game’s release they are STILL not saying anything official regarding a Linux/SteamOS release.
It may be due to legal issues. It may be due to manpower and wanting to wrap things up with Witcher and move on to their next major release. The only people who know are the devs at CDPR and they may not even know for certain since they don’t make the decisions there. They just follow orders.

I am a Linux user myself. I only have Windows on a partition for those games that are not ported to Linux (and one Windows computer for music production, because Cubase and the Spectrasonics and Native Instruments VST’s are Windows/Mac only).
I have seen that Linux tag, and was very surprised because CDPR has never ever said they would do a Linux version. I fully believe this was an error made by a Steam employee, otherwise that tag should have been visable on GOG too — And it never was.
How much I would like to see a port to Linux, I do not think this would ever happen. There is too much work involved, and CDPR is working on Cyberpunk 2077 now.
You see. You cannot just throw a wrapper around this game, because the game is very demanding and a wrapper should slow down things even further, making the game almost unplayable. For a good port that runs somewhat acceptable they would have to compile a native Linux version, and that is a LOT of work. You cannot just compile the core engine for another OS, simply because it’s depending on DirectX stuff. If the game was developed using OpenGL, there could have been at least an posibility. But as things are now. No way.
So — As a Linux user I would love to see a native Linux version of this game, but I also know there is something as a harsh cold reality that say’s: «Nope — Not going to happen».
I love the Witcher books and both first games, so I would find it hard to believe I will skip Witcher 3. But here I am: my main gaming rig is a Zotac Steam Machine and I have more than enough SteamOS games to play.
I hope a 3rd party developer will port Witcher 3 to Linux.
