How to resolve 0x6d9 Windows Firewall error?

Access to the Internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. Moreover, we want our online activities to remain secure and safe from viruses and malware. Of course, the first solution to fixing this problem is uninstalling your anti-malware/anti-virus software. On the other hand, there are cases where doing this step does not completely resolve the error. So, you might have to resort to the other options listed below.

Method 1: Conducting a System Restore on your Computer

After uninstalling your security software, you can perform a system restore. This will allow you to go back to the system settings before the error occurred. Follow the steps below:

1. Click the Search icon.
2. Type “System Restore” (no quotes).
3. In the System Restore section, click the System Restore button.
4. Click Apply and then click OK.

After following the steps above, check if the issue has been resolved.

Method 2: Reviewing the Status of the Following Windows Services

If you notice that the system restore did not thoroughly fix the error 0x6d9, the next resolution would be to check the following Windows services:

• Windows Firewall
• Base Filtering Engine (BFE)
• Windows Firewall Authorization Driver (MPSDRV)

To check them, follow the instructions below:

1. Press the Windows Key +R. This should open the Run dialog box.
2. Type in “services.msc” (no quotes) and click Enter.
3. Once the Services Manager window is up, look for the aforementioned services and check if they are set to “Started”.

Method 3: Resetting the Windows Firewall

Most of the time, users who researched how to resolve 0x6d9 Windows Firewall error followed this method and were able to fix the problem. You can reset the Windows Firewall via the Control Panel or by using an elevated Command Prompt. Doing so will allow you start the services and re-register the firewall DLL file. Here are the steps:

1. Press the Windows Key +R to open the Run dialog box.
2. Type in “cmd” (no quotes) and hit Enter to open Command Prompt.
3. Once the Command Prompt is up, execute the commands below, one by one:

• netsh advfirewall reset
• net start mpsdrv
• net start mpssvc
• net start bfe
• regsvr32 firewallapi.dll

Check if this method resolved the issue. If not, try the next fix.

Method 4: Resetting the Permissions for Microsoft Protection

In this method, you will deal with Windows Registry, which is a sensitive database. If you incorrectly modify it, registry files may be damaged, causing bigger problems to your computer. So, before you follow the steps below, make sure you back up the registry first.

Note the following keys and permissions:

Permission needed: Query Value; Set Value

Permission needed: Full Control; Read

Permission needed: Full Control; Read

Follow these steps:

1. Press the Windows Key +R to open the Run dialog box.
2. Type in “regedit” (no quotes) and press Enter.
3. Navigate to the aforementioned registry keys and look for “Enter the object names to select field”.
4. In the column, type “NT SERVICE\mpssvc” (no quotes). Click Check Name and then press OK.
5. Add the permissions to their corresponding keys.

Troubleshooting Windows Firewall Service (MPSSVC).

Resolution:

In Windows Vista and later, the firewall service is “Windows Firewall” (MPSSVC); it combines both Firewall and IPsec functionality.

The first thing to check is that the Base Filtering engine (BFE) is running. There are a number of services dependent on the BFE service (including the Windows Firewall) that may also fail to start:

• IPsec Policy Agent (PolicyAgent)
• Windows Firewall
• IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules
• Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
• Routing and Remote Access

In my experience most of the issues starting these services are related to permissions.

Typical errors seen in relation to starting this service are:

• Event ID: 7024 – The Windows Firewall service terminated with service-specific error 5 (0x5)
• Windows could not start the Base Filtering Engine service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied.
• Windows could not start the IPsec Policy Agent service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.
• Windows could not start the Network Location Awareness on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -1073741288.
• The Windows Firewall service terminated with service-specific error 87 (0x57)
• Error 0x80004015: The class is configured to run as a security id different from the caller.
• The Windows Firewall service terminated with service-specific error 6801 (0x1A91).
• “net start mpssvc” in cmd.exe returns the system error 1297.

What to look for (specific details will be shared in a future blog post):

• Verify Log On permissions
• Verify registry permissions
• Verify privilege permissions
• Verify Service Dependencies
• Reset the default security permissions
• Verify that the TxR folder exists : %systemroot%\system32\config\TxR
• Verify the following registry keys by comparing them to a default Windows installation:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BFE
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MpsSvc
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ShareAccess

Lastly, I am including information about one issue that may be seen with the Windows OneCare Firewall Service. The following messages may be seen:

The Windows OneCare Firewall Service Could not Start

Urgent – Turn on Firewall

You will see this error in the Windows OneCare interface, with a red status action item asking you to enable the firewall. The action listed does not enable the firewall, however.

This issue is also very specific because the firewall settings in Windows OneCare are grayed out and cannot be modified.

To resolve this issue:

Use the steps below to ensure that the PATH environment variable contains the following path:

1. Click Start / Control Panel and open the System Icon.
2. In System, click the Advanced tab and then Environment Variables.
3. Ensure that in the lower box “System variables” that PATH exists. If Path does not exist click NEW and type in PATH as the variable name and enter the above path in the variable value.
4. If PATH already exists, highlight it and click Edit.
5. Under variable name, click at the end of the line to append the above mentioned path to the end of the current path. NOTE: BE SURE TO SEPERATE THE OLD PATH AND THE NEW PATH WITH A SEMI-COLON ( ; ).
6. Click OK to close the windows and restart the computer.

If this does not resolve the issue, try the following step:

1. Click Start / Run and type Regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\System32\wbem\wmidcprv.dll and click OK.
2. Restart the computer and test the firewall again.

If this does not resolve the issue, or if the problem does not match the description, please follow the steps in KB article 910659.

I even uninstall my antivirus program — AVG and nothing helped

I use wundows 7 ultimate 32 bit.

no other firewall are insttaled.I used AVG antiviruse- now I use Avast.

i recently «cleaned» my computer with «TuneUP 1- click maintenance» and got the error- turn on

I tried everything that I found on the net- nothing helps.

when I try to enter the advance setting control panel on sys and security i got the masage» There was an error opening the Windows Firewall With Advanced

Security snap-in» and a note » The windows Firewall with advanced Security snap-in faild to load. Restart the windowes firewall service on the computer that you are managing. error code: 0x6d9″

the problam is that i cannot restart the service.

please help — if there is somthing that I can do before reinstalling windoes.

by the way- can i repaire windows 7 without reinstalling all my programs? there was such an option on earlier windows os.

Fix Windows Firewall with Advanced Security Snap-In Error 0x5 in Windows 7

When you open the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in in Windows 7, the following error may be displayed and the snap-in loads up blank:

There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in

You do not have the correct permissions to open the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security console. You must be a member of the Administrators group or the Network Operators group to perform this task. For more information, contact your system administrator. Error code: 0x5.

This has to do with the permissions pertaining to the Windows Firewall registry key (SharedAccess), and here is what I did to fix the error:

Click Start, type Regedit.exe and press

Navigate to the following branch:

Right-click FirewallPolicy, and click Permissions…

Type NT Service\MpsSvc and click OK.

Select MpsSvc, and click the Advanced button

Double-click the MpsSvc permission entry

Assign Query Value, Set Value, Create Subkey and Enumerate Subkeys Permissions by ticking the appropriate checkboxes.

Click OK, then OK, OK in the resulting dialog boxes.

See if you’re able to open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security MMC snap-in now.
