As long as the front door of a house is a direct route to the outside it doesn’t need to be fire rated. However, this can be dependent on the proximity of the boundary and the distance of adjacent buildings. Apartments, flats and properties accessed through a common area must have fire rated front doors to stop the spread of fire between properties. They must also have a thumb-operated lock on the inside of the door for means of escape.

Many variables influence the price of a door including material, construction, if locks and hardware have been added, and if the installation is included. The cheapest doors are sold as basic slabs – just the door leaf with no finish or hardware added. All Richard Thomas Conservatories, Extensions & Windows front doors are sold as door sets that come pre-assembled with the frame locks and all hardware in place and we then include the cost of installation.

You can change the front door of your property without needing planning approval. However, it is always advisable to speak to your local authority as there may be conditions attached to previous permissions or covenants covering what you can and cannot do.

Using double glazing in your home can reduce the energy of sound waves and help reduce the volume of external noise from entering your home. By coupling double glazed units with Acoustic glass, you can increase sound proofing further. This can make a significant difference when you suffer with noise pollution.

Condensation is caused by a temperature difference between the outside and the inside of the window — the colder side will attract any available moisture in the local atmosphere. It can appear on both the interior and exterior of a window. New windows really should solve the problem by reducing the exterior and interior temperature difference on the glass. The risk can be reduced further by increasing air circulation.

There is no reason why quality windows can’t last for the lifetime of the property if well maintained. However, not all windows are created equally. For example, timber windows will require some upkeep to maintain the paintwork. Invariably this comes down to personal preference. Lower quality windows for example may have no gas between the panes, limiting their effectiveness at reducing warmth in a room. Others may use poor quality seals that perish and result in draughts after around 10 years.
