Why The Office Is Being Thrown Out The Window

If you’re one of the many people who have recently traded in a cubicle for your kitchen table, stiff slacks for comfy sweats and a draining commute for an extra hour of sleep, you might be wondering how we could ever go back to the way things were before.

The reality is, we can’t — but this is a silver lining. The movement for flexible work just kicked into overdrive, as almost every company just tried working from home in some capacity at the same time.

About 62% of Americans say they have worked from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a recent Gallup poll. Of those who are working remotely, 59% say that they would like to work remotely as much as possible when the pandemic is over.

Not to mention, productivity is up. According to a recent survey conducted by YouGov, a public opinion and data company, in partnership with USA TODAY and LinkedIn, 54% of professionals ages 18-74 say that working from home has had a positive impact on their productivity.

While working at home during a pandemic is different than working at home when the world is not dealing with mass grief and navigating a new way of life, the reasons people cited for their productivity being up are worth considering when we think about flexible work becoming more permanent.

Of those who said working from home has had a positive impact on their productivity, 71% cited saving time from commuting, 61% cited less distractions from coworkers and 39% cited fewer meetings — all things that can be adjusted as we move to make flexible work the standard.

And, it’s not just employees that are seeing the value in flexible work — CEO’s are seeing it as well. The list of tech companies that are allowing their employees work from home indefinitely, is growing.

In mid-May, Twitter announced that employees will be able to work from home forever. Other tech companies, including Slack and Facebook, are considering shifting a large chunk of their employees to remote work permanently.

Crunchbase CEO, Jager McConnell is one of the tech leaders embracing flexible work with open arms. Prior to becoming the CEO of Crunchbase, the leading platform for professionals to discover companies and opportunities, he was the Vice President of Product at Salesforce for more than 10 years.

Since Crunchbase shifted to working remotely in early March, McConnell said recruiters have had no problem hiring people remotely, and it’s clear that the workplace will not look the same post-pandemic.

“I think we’re drifting towards it being 100% optional to come into the office. Our job is to give someone a place if they need a place to be,” McConnell said.

He predicts that when the Crunchbase office opens again, only 15% of Crunchbase’s 150+ employees will return to the office when given the option of continuing to work from home.

From there, McConnell said Crunchbase will likely reduce the office space that they are renting and sublease it, which will ultimately save the company money. Not being in the office anymore has also cut other costs, such as paying for employee lunches.

“We’re now putting that towards our community and other ways of having healthy employees,” McConnell said.

To mitigate burnout amid the global crisis we’re dealing with, Crunchbase has been giving employees every other Monday off as a mental health day. According to McConnell, Crunchbase employees have taken half as much paid time off as they did last year — which makes sense considering people are mostly bound to their homes right now.

“When this is over, we might collectively take a vacation,” McConnell said. “We don’t want 25% of the company to be out for months.”

Work flexibility that was once viewed as radical is paving the way for the new norm as the COVID-19 pandemic upends business processes. It’s forcing employees and employers alike to see just how possible it is to incorporate flexible work, or go one step further and make it the backbone of company culture.

In the future, one thing is certain: The office will never be exactly the same.
