В данном списке перечислены шрифты, общие для всех актуальных на данный момент операционных систем Windows (фактически начиная с Windows 98), и их эквиваленты в Mac OS. Такие шрифты иногда называют «безопасными шрифтами для браузеров» (browser safe fonts). Это небольшой справочник, которым я пользуюсь, когда делаю Web-страницы и думаю, что он будет полезен и Вам.

Если Вы новичок в web-дизайне, то может быть думаете что-нибудь типа: «Почему это я должен ограничиваться таким небольшим набором шрифтов? У меня есть огромная коллекция прекрасных шрифтов!» Дело в том, что браузер посетителя может отобразить только те шрифты, которые установлены в его операционной системе (прим. переводчика: в настоящее время уже есть возможность применять фактически любые шрифты при оформлении страниц используя CSS 3 и его новое свойство @font-face; правда, поддерживают эту функцию пока ещё далеко не все браузеры), а это означает, что каждый посетитель Вашей страницы должен быть обладателем выбранных Вами шрифтов. Поэтому Вы должны использовать только те шрифты, которые есть в каждой операционной системе. К счастью, в CSS есть свойство @font-family, облегчающее эту задачу.

1 Шрифты Georgia и Trebuchet MS поставляются вместе с Windows 2000/XP и включены в пакет шрифтов IE (да и вообще поставляются со многими приложениями от Microsoft), поэтому они установлены на многих компьютерах с ОС Windows 98.

2 Символьные шрифты отображаются только в Internet Explorer, в остальных браузерах они обычно заменяются на стандартный шрифт (хотя, например, шрифт Symbol отображается в Opera, а Webdings — в Safari).

3 Шрифт Book Antiqua практически идентичен Palatino Linotype; Palatino Linotype поставляется с Windows 2000/XP, а Book Antiqua — с Windows 98.

4 Обратите внимание, что эти шрифты не TrueType, а bitmap, поэтому они могут плохо выглядеть с некоторыми размерами (они предназначены для отображения в размерах 8, 10, 12, 14, 18 и 24 pt при 96 DPI).

5 Эти шрифты работают в Safari только в стандартном начертании, но не работают при выделении жирным или курсивом. Comic Sans MS также работает жирным, но не курсивом. Шрифт Times New Roman («Таймс Новый Прямой» c англ.) – один из самых популярных шрифтов в мире. Его история началась в известной газете Times, в 1931 году, где он был разработан и впервые напечатан на бумаге. Его разработчиком считается английский шрифтовик Стенли Морисон. Матрицами для печати занимались одновременно две британские фирмы Monotype и Linotype. Газета Times пригласила Стенли как самого опытного и известного на то время эксперта по типографике. С ним были проведены консультации, и самым важным решением стало изменение главного наборного шрифта.

В итоге получился достаточно компактный шрифт со средним наклоном осей овалов и очень острыми засечками. Некоторые эксперты называют его «переходной антиквой», как и многие шрифты начала XX века. Но Times, со временем, стал одним из самых популярных из-за своей универсальности и удобочитаемости.

Интересно, что в названии шрифта, Roman – это римский (раньше так называли прямые шрифты), тогда как Italic – это итальянский (так называют шрифты с наклоном), поэтому название Times New Roman Italic звучит довольно противоречиво.

Times New Roman – это стандартный шрифт для документов, используемый в наборах для Microsoft Office вплоть до 2007 года, а также до сих пор активно используется в Apple во многих приложениях и в веб-браузерах. Этот шрифт используется для всех дипломатических документов в Государственном департаменте США. В России существует ГОСТ 7.32 – 2001, в соответствии с которым текстовые документы должны быть оформелны шрифтом Times New Roman, кеглем не менее 12.

Этот шрифт окутан загадками. Так, например, американский историк Майк Паркер, в 1994 году сделал заявление, в котором говорилось, что гарнитура разработана вовсе не Стенли Морисоном. Речь шла о том, что найдены эскизы заброшенного, незаконченного проекта, которые как две капли воды похожи на шрифт Times. Эскизы принадлежат компании Lanston Monotype, и были разработаны в 1916 году, задолго до появления Times New Roman.

Times Newer Roman is designed to add length to any academic paper that has page requirements and also requires the use of Times New Roman. Just download, install via fontBook or your preferred font management software, and swap to Times Newer Roman. Times Newer Roman is actually an altered version of Nimbus Roman No.9 L (1), a free and open-source font meant to mimic the size and look of the original Times New Roman typeface. The few minor changes that have been made are in pursuit of widening the letters and the spaces between letters without changing their vertical heights at all. This means that a paper of given word count will have more length when rendered in Times Newer Roman instead of the old Times New Roman—hopefully without being noticeable to whoever’s job it is to grade the paper.

The x–height (2) of all lowercase letters has been increased by about 5% so that they sit wider at the same point size. Certain letters that can be widened easily, like the «n», «u», «v», «y», among others, have been edited manually. The size of punctuation has been increased by 15% across the board and the spaces around them increased proportionally.

Times New Roman font family

Overview

This remarkable typeface first appeared in 1932 in The Times of London newspaper, for which it was designed. It has subsequently become one of the worlds most successful type creations. The original drawings were made under Stanley Morison’s direction by Victor Lardent at The Times. It then went through an extensive iterative process involving further work in Monotype’s Type Drawing Office. Based on experiments Morison had conducted using Perpetua and Plantin, it has many old style characteristics but was adapted to give excellent legibility coupled with good economy. Widely used in books and magazines, for reports, office documents and also for display and advertising.

Version 2.55 — This WGL4 version of Times New Roman was first supplied with the Final Windows 95 euro update that shipped on 4 November 1998. This version contains the euro.

Version 2.50 — This version of Times New Roman is supplied with European versions of Windows 98. North American users can add it by installing multilanguage support. This version contains the euro.

Version 2.45 — This Win ANSI version of Times New Roman is supplied with the US version of Windows 98.

Version 2.01 — This special version of Times New Roman was only supplied with the beta version of the Windows 95 euro update.

Version 2.00 (Win ANSI) — This Win ANSI version of Times New Roman is supplied with Windows 95.

Version 2.00 (WGL4) — This WGL4 version of Times New Roman is supplied with Windows 95 and Windows NT4. This version does not contain the euro.
