I am using dark mode in W10 Anniversary Update, TC doesn’t follow that change at all.
In W7 it only works if I go to Windows Classic theme, which I don’t like. It should work with default Aero theme as well. And as you know, W10 doesn’t offer Classic theme at all.

Just for the records: since Win 10 anniversary update (that is being rolled out since a few days) the dark mode is an official setting in the personalization options. No more registry hacking required.
Apart from that I agree that the dark mode is ignored by most of the Win 10 applications, even the MS own ones.

Create a link on your Desktop to (Just copy&paste):
C:\Windows\System32\control.exe /NAME Microsoft.Personalization /PAGE pageColorization
It will make a connection to «Color and appearance», a hidden control setting in Win10.
By this you can comfortably create classic themes in Windows. In a visual way.
There are still some minor disadvantages in TC, like invisible symbols for Directory hotlist and History.

Oh joy, what an improvement, users can now choose between eye-burning white and black! So many options, ain’t that crazy? Who can handle so much freedom?! Except on second look, it only works for few of these «modern» apps and the rest of system is not moved by it in any way. Even on empty desktop alone, it still has half of popup menus with hardcoded light background and other half with hardcoded dark background. And the rest of system is not any better.
The sad fact is, that the whole customization in Windows is messed up beyond repair. Most things are not easily customizable any more. You can still change some things in registry, but half of programs will ignore it anyway. Many now use a different kinds of custom skins each, so you can’t make two look alike. And this new development won’t improve the situation either.
Sorry for non-helpful rant, but sometimes I have to, it’s stronger than me. 😉

Thanks for adding Dark Mode to Total Commander!
I am really happy it will be soon available for everyone. I tested 9.50 beta1 and I see you use almost black colour for windows. Could you use the colour like Windows 10 use? I mean not black, but dark.
Let me show you the screenshot from my machine — it shows Windows 10 explorer window and TC.
As you can see, Win10 uses $00191919 color — TC uses $00101010.
Maybe there should be used also $00202020 color for some area in TC?
How do you think?

Just select two less black colors than the default: «Configuration -> Options. -> Display. Color:»

Dark Mode changes the color of TC window. I can set Background color (Config\Options\Display\Color) to $00202020 and Background 2 Color to something that I like — but I suggested Christian to change window color — $00101010 to $00191919 color (which is less dark and better for eye).

You can actually set the foreground, background and highlight colors for dark mode!
It’s in Configuration — Options — Color — Others:
Dark mode:
Text color
Background color
Highlight

I forgot about «Others» options. Sorry!
But, you could change default background color to less dark (like windows explorer use).

Выпущена новая версия Total Commander — легендарного файлового менеджера для операционной системы Windows.
Total Commander 9.50 — это крупное и важное обновление, которое будет полезно опытным пользователям программы. В этом выпуске предпринята масса улучшений, добавлены новые опции и настройки, включена темная тема интерфейса, добавлен целый набор небольших удобств для различных панелей, улучшены функции поиска и т. п. Ниже перечислены ключевые и самые заметные улучшения этого обновления.
Что нового в Total Commander 9.50:
Интерфейс:
- Темный режим интерфейса. Полная поддержка, начиная с Windows 10 (1809); частично работает даже в Windows XP.
- Добавлена поддержка настройки Windows исходного положения курсора мыши через кнопку, выбираемую по умолчанию.
- Отображение до 3-х устройств, подключенных по USB, без буквы диска (телефоны, планшеты и т. п.) на панели дисков.
- Расширена история директорий до 200.
- Теперь история отображает только каталоги, в которых была произведена любая операция (можно настроить). «Alt+Shift+Вниз» отображает полную историю.
- Отображение значка извлечения поверх иконок съемных дисков в выпадающем меню дисков и на главной панели.
- Добавлена настройка «Опережающая прокрутка строк» («Настройки» > «Основные операции») для отступа строк сверху и снизу от выбора при прокрутке с клавиатуры списка файлов. По умолчанию 4.
- Теперь быстрый просмотр через «Ctrl+Q» отображает файл, на который ссылается ярлык, а не содержимое самого ярлыка.
- Для элементов панели добавлена возможность добавлять «\» для отображения директорий в виде «директория\», а не «[директория]» («Конфигурация» > «Настройка» > «Содержимое панелей»).
- В контекстное меню [..] добавлен пункт «Новый» для создания нового файла в текущей директории.
- Исправлена неработоспособность функции «Отправить» контекстного меню файла в Windows 10.
- Диалог быстрого поиска: очистка поиска сочетанием «Ctrl+Y».
- Доступ к меню «Недавно закрытые вкладки» через правый клик на вкладках директорий.
- В окошко «О программе» добавлена информация о расположении EXE-файла программы.
Операции с файлами:
- При распаковке архивов добавлена настройка кодировки имен файлов.
- Обработка директорий, которые отображаются как ссылки на файловую систему в папке OneDrive.
- В диалоге копирования («F5») теперь поддерживается список избранных каталогов («Ctrl+D»).
- Для расчета контрольной суммы CRC доступны новые опции: использование UTF-8 и UNIX-формата.
- Поддержка подстрок для переменных среды. К примеру: %variable:
FTP / Плагины для файловой системы:
- Передача с FTP на FTP через «F5»: опция для копирования через локальный компьютер.
- Перенос из/в FTP/FS: поддержка копирования фильтров как копирование локальных файлов. Например: *.txt | excludeddir\.
- Для работы с FTP-серверами через диалог копирования файлов «F5» в функцию очереди «F2» добавлена поддержка клиентских сертификатов.
- RestrictInterface=6144: запрещены любые плагины. 4096: разрешены только плагины с действительной цифровой подписью.
Групповое переименование:
- Новый шаблон: [c] = количество файлов в списке.
- Новый шаблон [S] = размер файла.
Alt+F10:
- В окно дерева каталогов добавлена опция для использования программы Everything для загрузки дерева каталогов.
- Добавлена возможность вызова списка дисков через «Alt+F1» (левая панель) и «Alt+F2» (правая панель).
Поиск:
- Поиск через программу Everything: отображение процента результатов поиска.
- Улучшен поиск в XML-файлах Microsoft Office (.docx, .ods и прочих): поиск символов с диакритическими знаками.
- Автоматическая проверка наличия программы Everything при использовании префиксов «ev:» и «ed:». Если Everything отсутствует, то предлагается перейти к загрузке программы.
- Опция для поиска только по результатам поиска.
- Возможность возврата к результатам предыдущего поиска.
Lister (F3):
- Добавлена настройка «Режим просмотра по типам файлов», определяющая как будут открываться файлы (метод, плагин). Это позволяет назначить каждому формату конкретную программу.
- Клавиша «8» для предварительного просмотра в качестве проводника (используется IPreviewHandler или IThumbnailProvider).
- Поддержка печати изображений в форматах JPG, PNG, GIF из Lister через внутренний вьювер.
Сравнение:
- Настройка цвета для подчеркивания результатов поиска.
Синхронизация каталогов:
- Переход к следующей/предыдущей директории через «Ctrl+PageUp/PageDown».
Внутренние команды:
- Новые внутренние команды: LOADSELECTION, SAVESELECTION, SAVEDETAILS + ANSI/Unicode.
- cm_ModernShare позволяет напрямую использовать пункт «Поделиться» контекстного меню Windows 10.
- cm_ChangeArchiveEncoding позволяет открыть всплывающее меню кодировки архива.
- cm_MoveTabLeft and cm_MoveTabRight позволяет вручную переносить текущую вкладку.
Также это обновление исправляет массу ошибок и недоработок, обнаруженных в программе со времен предыдущего релиза.
