Transcribe! Overview

Transcribe! is an assistant for working out a piece of music from a recording. Transcribe! offers many features aimed at making the transcription job smoother and easier, including the ability to slow down the music without changing its pitch, and to analyse chords and show you what notes are present.

Features: Transcribe! reads audio from many different types of audio file and audio CD. It displays the audio waveform and allows you to scroll around, place markers for sections, measures and beats, and easily play or loop from any point. It can also display video files synchronised with the slowed down music. You can add textual annotations. Loops and positions can be stored and recalled. There are many keyboard shortcuts and you can configure these as you like. Transcribe! can respond to various pedals so as to keep your hands free : start and stop playback with your feet! There is extensive and readable help accessible from within the program. The «spectrum» feature displays the strength of the various pitches in any chord or note you select, in the form of a graph — a wavy line over a piano keyboard graphic. The height of the various peaks in the graph indicate the strength of the note above which the peak appears. Transcribe! offers various audio processing effects (Slowdown, Pitch Change, EQ filtering etc) intended to help with transcribing. These effects all run in «real time» unless your machine is old and slow. This means there is no pre-processing or other waiting, the processing is performed on-the-fly while playing and you can instantly hear the effect of changes to EQ etc. For instance if you press the half-speed button while playing then playback simply continues, at half speed.

Installation Instructions

1. Select (below on this page) the appropriate version of Transcribe! for your Mac OS version. It will download the file transcribe.dmg to your Downloads folder.
2. Double-click the dmg file. It will open a window showing the Transcribe! application with an arrow pointing to the Applications folder.
3. Drag the Transcribe! application from the dmg file to the Applications folder. This creates a copy of the application.
   Note: a very small number of people find that this creates a link (an «alias») rather than a copy. You can tell because the icon for an alias has a little arrow on it. If this happens to you then delete the alias and drag again, this time holding down the alt (option) key. This tells the Mac to make a copy.
4. Launch Transcribe! by double-clicking it in the Applications folder, or you can drag it from the Applications folder to the Dock which will create a link (not a copy) in the Dock.
5. Once you have done this, you don’t need to keep the downloaded dmg file any more, though you can if you want to, for backup purposes.

Remember that dragging an application to the dock does not create a copy of it, it just creates a link. If you drag the application from the dmg to the dock and then trash the downloaded dmg file, then Transcribe! will disappear from the dock the next time the trash is emptied.

If you are updating from an earlier version of Transcribe! then you can delete the old version by dragging it from the Applications folder to the trash.

If you try to run Transcribe! from within the dmg then it will produce a warning message describing the problem. The best thing to do is to delete all copies of the dmg file and empty the trash. If the left column in Finder is showing «transcribe» then that is the dmg and you should eject it by clicking the little eject triangle alongside the name, before deleting it.

Mac OS 11.0 (Big Sur), for Intel and Apple Silicon (M1) machines.

For Transcribe! 9.10 we have separate builds for Intel and the new Apple Silicon (M1) processors, which means you have to choose the right version. In fact the Intel version will also run on Apple Silicon machines but obviously you get better performance with the Apple Silicon version.

To find out which version you need, select «About This Mac» on the Apple menu at the top left of the screen. The window that pops up has a line saying «Processor» or «Chip» and will say either «Intel» or «Apple M1».

Also for Transcribe! 9.10 we include GStreamer as part of the Transcribe! Mac download (if you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it). This has the advantage of convenience and of avoiding confusion about which GStreamer version to use with which Transcribe! version. The only drawback is that the download is bigger, around 45 MB.

A very small number of people are finding that the Intel version won’t launch (I have a total of four reports so far!). If this happens to you then please see the FAQ query here.

Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite), 10.11 (El Capitan), 10.12 (Sierra), 10.13 (High Sierra), 10.14 (Mojave), and 10.15 (Catalina).

With this version of Transcribe! you may also want to download GStreamer, mainly if you want to handle video. Note that if you have already installed GStreamer then you don’t need to install it again when you update Transcribe!

What’s new in Transcribe! 9.10.0:

• Various improvements including the first native build for Apple Silicon M1 Macs.
• Mac: we now have a native build for Apple Silicon (M1 processor) machines, which means you have to choose the right version. In fact the Intel version will also run on Apple Silicon machines but obviously you get better performance with the Apple Silicon version. ALSO we now include GStreamer as part of the Transcribe! Mac download. This has the advantage of convenience and of avoiding confusion about which GStreamer version to use with which Transcribe! version. The only drawback is that the download is bigger: 50 MB (Intel) or 43 MB (Apple Silicon).
• By popular request, you can now have whatever speed buttons you want (in the range from 5% to 200%), in the upper toolbar. See Preferences — Toolbar for how.
• CPU usage while playing is now somewhat less, but you can make it lower still by selecting «Reduced CPU» in Preferences — General. This doesn’t affect the audio or video, it merely reduces the frame rate of screen redrawing, meaning that scrolling of the waveform or movement of the play position indicator will be less smooth. This is helpful if you are using your laptop on battery power, or want to stop the fan running.

Transcribe! is an application that allows you to work out a pier of music from a recording, in order to write it out or even play it yourself.

Additionally, Transcribe! comes with features that make the transcription job easy and smooth. It also includes the ability to analyze chords and slow the music down.

The spectrum analysis feature is useful for working out those chords, but you must still use your ear and brain to decide which of the peaks in the spectrum are notes being played.

Review

Create a copy of a piece of music from a larger recording. Transcribe the notes and layout of the selected content, manage individual files or combine multiple tracks into a single presentation. Change pitch, tempo, volume, standard effects, chords, etc.

If you are looking to play a piece of music and there are no scores or tablatures available, Transcribe! is just the tool for the job. The application will not automatically provide the score but it is designed to act as an assistant in the transcription process. It includes a player especially created to suit the task with several other built-in utilities to enhance its usage.

Transcribe! has a well-designed layout centered around its player; the interface is easily customizable with multiple visual aids available: piano roll, note / chord guesses, spectrum, dB lines, time lines. Users can slow down the playback of the audio file or speed it up.

Audio effects and controls provide additional functions to Transcribe!; it may be used to isolate sound for different purposes like Karaoke, change equalizer settings (remove or select bass, tenor, alto, soprano, flute, piccolo, top), tuning, reference note, timbre. This way you can easily remove an instrument and play along.
