Diagnostics for Network and Internet fails with Error Code: 0x80070005
When I run Network and Internet diagnostics for Network Adapter I get the following error:
An error occurred while troubleshooting:
An unexpected error has occurred. The troubleshooting wizard can’t continue.
Package ID: NetworkDiagnosticsNetworkAdapter
Path: C:\WINDOWS\Diagnostics\Index\NetworkDiagnostics_4_NetworkAdapter.xml
Error Code: 0x80070005
Source: Engine
User: ISA\gary
Context: Restricted
I started the diagnostics wizard to help fix an issue related to not finding domain computers listed in windows explorer. I can ping the computers and find and access them using the UNC (\\»computer name»).
Have checked the adapter card settings and did not find any issues (Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver and Responder are checked); ensured that firewall settings are correct (set for «Domain networks»); stopped all virus/spyware/adware apps, and ensured «User Account Control Settings» is set properly. Note: get the same error if UAC is on or off.
We have sixteen workstations with win8 pro that work ok. All our computers are dell precision workstation T5500 x-64 with 16gb ram and 500gb hard drives, Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit adapter.
Hi gary breeden,
Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.
From your description, it appears that when you run Network and Internet diagnostics for Network Adapter you get the error message and the troubleshooter won’t complete the troubleshooting.
In order to help you better please provide us the following information:
1) Did you make any recent changes to your computer?
To fix this issue you can follow these steps:
Try the steps provided in this link:
Method 1: Perform a clean boot.
To help troubleshoot the error messages and other issues, you can start Windows 8 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a «clean boot.» A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts. You can refer this link to perform clean boot.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
important: Reset the computer to start as usual.
Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.
a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.
b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.
c) On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click ‘OK’.
d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’.
Method 2: Disable antivirus software:
a) Press “Windows + R” key to open Run Window.
b) In the Run window Type Control and click ok to open Control panel.
c) Select security in control panel and then select Security Center.
d) Click on Malware protection.
(If Windows can detect your antivirus software, it will be listed under Virus protection.)
e) If the software is on, check the Help that came with the software for information on disabling it.
Windows does not detect all antivirus software, and some antivirus software doesn’t report its status to Windows. If your antivirus software is not displayed in Windows Security Center and you’re not sure how to find it, try any of the following:
• Look for the antivirus software in the list of programs on the Start menu.
• Type the name of the software or the publisher in the Search box on the Start menu.
• Look for the icon in the notification area of the taskbar.
Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you’re done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks

I’ve discovered that for any diagnostics i attempt, i get Error: 0x80070005. e.g., When running the Windows Update diagnostic tool i get:
An error occurred while troublewhooting:
An unexpected error has occurred. The troubleshooting wizard can’t continue.
Package ID: WindowsUpdateDiagnostics
Error Code: 0x80070005
You may also try disabling the security software and check if the issue persists. If the issue does not reoccur then uninstall the security software and then reinstall it.
To uninstall or change a program
Open Programs and Features by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Programs and Features.

Question
Hi, I have been having this problem for the past few days. I reinstalled Windows 7 (Home Premium) and am able to access the Internet via Opera tab page (e.g., Facebook) but cannot access other pages that I search (e.g., tunnel bear). I ran many diagnostics and no problem was found. I changed adapter settings to automatically detect (IPv6 and IPv4) for the DNS server, but this has not helped. I have tried to follow threads on similar subject but am not finding a solution.
Please help resolve this frustrating matter. Thank you.

We could try to follow the steps below to check the issue.
1. Check your proxy settings
Open IE>Tool>Connections Option>LAN settings
We could choose “Automatically detect settings and deselects “Use a proxy server for your LAN”.
2. We could open Network and Sharing Centre and select Internet protocol version 4. Then we could try to configure DNS.
3. If none of this works, we could try to use the ipconfig command to check.
For the 2 and 3 steps, please refer to the link below to get the detailed information.

Question
My internet stopped working last night, and I did what I always do which is click the internet icon in the task bar to run the troubleshooting program, and a box appeared in the middle of my screen. Inside the box it stated,
An error occurred while troubleshooting.
An unexpected error has occurred. The troubleshooting wizard can’t continue.
Package ID: NetworkDiagnostics
Error code: 0x8002801D
I am running as the administrator. I am using W7 Ultimate x64. I have googled the error code, and I have not found a fix. I have never had this happen before and I am at a loss on fixing it.

Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum.
I would like to confirm if this error still occurs when you use another troubleshooting tool.
Due to this error was occurred on last night; you could boot into last good known configurations or perform a System Restore to get back to a previous time point which Windows 7 worked fine. If system restore cannot fix this issue, you can undo system restore.
You could take the following steps to check if it could fix this issue:
1. Re-registering the DiagPackage.dll.
1) Go to Start, select Run, and type:
2) regsvr32 DiagPackage.dll
2. Due to this problem caused by NetworkDiagnostics, you could try to copy the files of C:\Windows\diagnostics\system\networking folder from a normal Windows 7 to your Windows 7. Please backup the system first.

Thank you very much for your time and the sharing of your knowledge, but I solved the issue. I had the wrong external backup hard drive connected when I attempted to perform a System Restore. After connecting the correct drive, all of my restore points were available to select from. I went back one by one, until I found a point at which the diagnostics program worked successfully. I only had to go back to the Nov 12, 2010 restore point, so I will see what programs I installed after that point that caused the issue. Once again, thank you.

Thanks for update.
First, I would like to confirm whether other diagnostic tools can work normally.
Due to this issue is caused by NetworkDiagnostics, to analyze it better, we could use PowerShell module to check if the issue persists:
1. Please type PowerShell in search box, select Windows PowerShell and open it.
2. Load the following module9 (type the following words in PowerShell):
3. Use networking pack:
Get-TroubleshootingPack -Path «C:\Windows\diagnostics\system\Networking» | fl
4. Start network troubleshoot session:
Get-TroubleshootingPack -Path «C:\Windows\diagnostics\system\Networking» | Invoke-TroubleshootingPack
It should display as following:
Starting network diagnostics.
Not to be specified outside of MSDT application .
5. Click Enter key to choose which task we want to perform. For example, we can type “1” to troubleshoot the webconnectivity issue.
Try using the method above to test, and tell us what the result is.

Thank you for the reply. I will try your recommendation when I get home this evening (it’s 6:00 a.m. where I am). Just so you know, I no longer have an internet connectivity issue. The problem with the connection was my ISP (Comcast). The internet came back on line a few hours later after going down that same night. My issue is that when I attempted to run the diagnostic troubleshooting program that evening to determine the reason for the disconnect, it would not run (and still will not run). I will post my results after implementing your suggestion.
Edit — I opened the Powershell command box. What came up in the following:
When I type what you listed in #2 above and hit enter, it gives me the same line that I just listed above., so I entered what you have on #3 above. The following is what came up:
Name: Windows Network Diagnostics
Description: Detect problems with network connectivity.
Minimum Version: 6.1
Supports Client; SupportsServer; SupportsX86; SupportsAmd64; SupportsIA64; RequiresElevation; Interactive — All are true.
When I type what you listed in #4 above the following comes up in red lettering:
Invoke-TroubleshootingPack : Library not registered. >
