Turn off windows phone

How do you turn off Cortana in Windows Phone 10

I accidentally hit search and the button to allow Cortana because it hit my arm while I was opening up my phone. I’ve tried to turn it off but it says «I’m afraid I can’t help out with that permission. I’ll be happy to do anything else that doesn’t require that, though»

This is straight up Hal saying «I can’t let you do that, Dave.» This is not funny. I don’t want to have to reset my phone but I’ll be %%%% if I’m going to let MSFT have this much information about me.

We, loyal Windows 10 phone users, seems we do not like Cortana! Every time I put my phone in my pocket and accidentally hit the little magnifying glass on the bottom right of the phone, Cortana starts up and talks to me! This happens while it is in my pocket in a meeting or worse!

I do not hate Cortana, just want to turn it off on my Windows 10 phone (Nokia 1520, great phone works great with 10) just that Cortana is a pain turning on all the time!

Need it to be turned off!

Microsoft, «This phone belongs to Bruce C., not to Microsoft»! If we cannot fix this we will need to go elsewhere for our cell phones!

I have been loyal to Microsoft since DOS 1.0, in fact have a sealed copy of it! But, you have changed, and maybe we need to change!

Turn off Windows Phone keys vibration

I want to turn off vibration when pressing the back, home and search keys.

Is it possible to do this in Windows Phone 8+?

This feature is available since WP 8.0 Black update, under Settings → Touch.

You can turn this off in the touch settings:
1. Go to Settings
2. Navigate to Touch

You should be able to see these options

How to Turn PC On & Off with Android Phone

A lot of people have a habit of leaving their PC running all the time, and in many cases, move out without shutting it down. Well, the good news for such people is that they can set up their Android phone to work as a remote control for their PC. So, whenever you leave your PC running you can simply turn it off, put it on sleep or start it back remotely using your smartphone.

If you want to take advantage of this convenience then I can help. In this post, I’ll show you how you can shutdown your PC remotely from anywhere and start it while you are near the local network.

Shutdown PC remotely over LAN

If you want to shutdown a nearby PC that is connected to the same network as your smartphone, then all you need to do is install an app on your smartphone and its server on your PC. You can then send commands to shutdown, sleep or hibernate your PC from your smartphone.

There are many apps available for this purpose, but I recommend Shutdown Start Remote as it’s free (as long as you don’t mind some non-intrusive ads) and easier to use. Download the application on your Android phone and then download its server from the official website on your PC (link available in the app as well).

For the server to run, you must have Java Runtime Environment installed. If the server link isn’t opening on your PC, then go to the Java website and choose the right installer to download and install Java Runtime Environment.

Open up the Shutdown Start Remote server on your PC (no need to install it) and then open up the app on your Android phone. If both devices are connected to the same network, then you should see your PC name in the Shutdown Start Remote app interface. Tap on it to connect to your PC.

In the main interface, you can set a timer to shutdown, sleep, or hibernate your PC after a specific time. If you want to immediately complete the action, then tap on the Shutdown, Sleep, or Hibernate buttons at the bottom to immediately send the command to your PC.

Shutdown PC remotely from anywhere

The above is a nice and easy solution, but it is limited to devices connected to the same network. If you want to shutdown your PC from anywhere, then that is possible as well. For this purpose, you will need to use a Windows tool called Airytec Switch Off.

The tool is a bit old now and was last updated in 2015, but it still works fine and securely does what you need.

Install Airytec Switch Off and launch the app. The tool works from the taskbar, so you should see its icon in the system tray. You need to enable remote access now.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Right-click on the Airytec Switch Off icon and select Options from the list.
  2. Move to the Remote tab and check the checkbox next to Enable web interface.
  3. You should also check the checkbox next to Enable authentication option and provide a password. This is optional, but I’ll highly recommend doing this as anyone can control your PC if they get access to your external IP address. The password will protect you against an attack.
  4. Click on the Apply button to confirm the changes.
  5. Now click on «View / Update static address» link and copy and save the «Current Switch Off Url» somewhere you could easily access.
  6. You can enter this URL in a browser on any device (like a smartphone) from anywhere and provide the password (if added) to open up Airytec web interface. Here you can tap on the shutdown command to turn off your PC remotely.

In case the URL isn’t working for you, disable your PC’s firewall and try again. You might also have to open port 8000 in your router if disabling firewall doesn’t help.

Starting PC using Android phone

Waking up your PC from your Android phone completely depends on your PC. Your PC’s motherboard and network card must have WOL (Wake-on-LAN) support, and it must be connected to the internet through an ethernet cable. This feature is still not very common in PCs and even a little wrong configuration or support issue could mean you can’t wake up your PC remotely my any means.

Overall, the chances are a minimum that WOL would be working perfectly fine on your PC. The best you can do is enter your PC’s BIOS settings (search online for how to do it for your manufacturer) and enable WOL option under power management category if available.

To start your PC using your Android phone, you’ll need the app Wake on Lan. Download this app on your smartphone and make sure both your PC and your smartphone are connected to the same network. Afterward, follow the below instructions:

  1. Tap on the » + » icon at the bottom-right corner and select your PC from the next page.
  2. Now tap on Add device to add it to the list of devices that you want to Wake on LAN.
  3. All you need to do now is tap on your PC’s name and it will automatically wake up from sleep, hibernate, or shutdown state.

If you want to wake up your PC from shutdown state, then make sure that the PC is properly shutdown using the Shutdown option from the power options. And of course, it should be connected to a power source all the time.

Conclusion

You should also know that Airytec also has an option to shutdown a PC available on the local network. However, in my testing, it didn’t work really well and most of the time failed when I tried to do it from a different device. So sticking with Shutdown Start Remote is a better option for locally shutting down your PC.

How to disable the Your Phone feature in Windows 10?

‘The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary

so that the necessary may speak’

When using a smartphone, it is common to encounter such situations in which switching to a bigger screen and proceeding with your work there would be an extremely desirable shift. That is where the Your Phone feature, which you can find at Settings -> Phone in Windows 10, comes in very handy. It allows you to link your mobile device to your Win 10 PC and migrate your activities from your iPhone or Android device to your computer via the Continue on PC feature in the Microsoft Edge mobile app.

Although this kind of cross-platform integration is by all accounts a miracle, you might have your own reasons for giving this kind of opportunity a wide berth. For instance, there might be some security, safety, or ethical reasons involved that force you to reject the Your Phone option. In a scenario like this, it would be a good idea to disable the app in view so that you can rest easy knowing that nobody is allowed to connect their phone to your computer.

With this in mind, Auslogics experts have collected a list of the best methods how to disable the Phone-to-PC linking feature on Windows 10. You are welcome to make use of them if you are looking how to turn off Your Phone App on Windows 10:

Use Group Policy to turn off Windows Phone-PC linking

This solution is for those users who are running Windows 10 Pro / Enterprise. Here is how you can utilize Group Policy to say goodbye to the Phone-to-PC linking feature:

  1. Invoke the Run app by simultaneously pressing the Windows logo and R keys on your keyboard.
  2. Type gpedit.msc into the Run bar and click OK or hit Enter.
  3. Once you are in the Local Group Policy Editor, go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Group Policy.
  4. In the right pane, locate and double-click Phone-PC linking on this device.
  5. Select Disabled. Then click Apply and OK.

Now no phone can be linked to your PC.

Use Registry Editor to disable Your Phone App on Windows 10

Those who are using Windows 10 Home should use this set of instructions to disable the app in question:

  1. Press the Windows logo key + R shortcut to open the Run app.
  2. Type regedit into the Run bar and hit Enter.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows.
  4. In the left-pane menu, locate and right-click the Windows (folder) key.
  5. From the drop-down menu, select New. Then select Key.
  6. Name the new key System and hit Enter to proceed.
  7. Right-click the new key, click New, and select DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  8. Name the new item EnableMmx and hit Enter.
  9. Go to the right-pane. Double-click the EnableMmx key.
  10. Go to Value data and type 0. Click OK.

Now you are good to go.

Use Auslogics Windows Slimmer

Windows 10 is packed full of cutting-edge features, the Phone-to-PC linking option being one of them, and Microsoft takes pride in that. However, not all users need such an arsenal, and some computers are not powerful enough to run Windows 10 as fancy as it is by default. And on top of that, those features, services, and apps that are rarely or never used still eat into your system resources, so keeping them active is actually irrational. Anyway, you are undoubtedly justified in getting rid of the things that you do not use – whatever your reason for doing so. Since decluttering your Windows manually is no easy task and is actually more of a challenge, we recommend employing a dedicated tool for the purpose in question.

One of such tools is Auslogics Windows Slimmer: it is a free program that increases the efficiency of your system by tweaking its settings and removing what you do not need. What is more, Auslogics Windows Slimmer prevents unnecessary data transmission. As a result, your Windows becomes easier to use, safer and more productive.

Now you know how to disable the Phone-to-PC linking feature on Windows 10.
