Cinnamon Version 2.8.8
Linux Kernel 4.4.0-112-generic
Processor Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz x 2
Memory 7.9GiB
Hard Drives 289.0GB
Graphics Card NVIDIA Corporation GM107[GeForce GTX 750]

Have a dual boot system Mint 18.2 and Mint 17.3 with two monitors. After installing Mint 18.2. I booted into Mint 18.2 and everything worked. I forgot a license number on a piece of software. Did a restart and booted into Mint 17.3. Shut computer down for the night and booted into Mint 18.2 in the morning and got the following error message.
(EE) Fatal Server Error: (EE) Server is already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.XOlock and start again.

Black screen with error message window: Unable to launch «cinnamon-session=cinnamon» not found falling back to default sessions.

Instructions:
First you should have cinnamon on your system

Second issue the commands

/.xsession
sudo service xrdp restart

OR if you like to do it hard:) do the following:

Edit the file /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh

sudo -H gedit /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh

At the end of the file you will find the following lines:

pre_start
wm_start
post_start

These are calls to functions above. So in order to make cinnamon the default just put # before wm_start to comment it (to stop calling the function which searches for the sessions)

Add the following line in front of the above three lines gnome-session —session=cinnamon

restart xrdp sudo service xrdp restart

sudo /etc/init.d/xrdp restart

Second to Fourth try to fix: From community.linuxmint.com Fixing the black screen after grub boot-up: Edited the grub menu for Mint 18.2. At the end of the linux line: tried nvidia.modeset=0 (locked up password), Tried Nouveaulmodeset=0, Tried nomodeset xforcevesa

Instructions:
I keep getting the message: «Server is already active for display 0»

You get an error message like:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

The number denotes the display number (in this case 0). This number needs to be unique on the system, so you cannot run two servers on one system with identical display numbers. This message indicates that there is already a server with this number running on the system. You can verify this by running

ps aux | grep `cat /tmp/.X0-lock`

If you see an output like:

root 2283 0.5 5.1 27796 6536 ? S Apr21 59:03 [X]

it indicates that there is indeed an Xserver running under this PID. To start a second server on the same system you have to give it a different dislay number. If you start your servers using startx you can do

to start a server with display number 1. If you are sure there is no other server running on your system and above ps command indicates that no server with this PID is running, you should remove the file /tmp/.X0-lock by doing (as ‘root’):

rm -rf /tmp/.X0-lock

ps aux | grep `cat /tmp/.X0-lock` At this command it just went back to the command prompt. I did it again and got message back «No such file or directory.

Tried some other things from the command prompt to update packages but still did not work.

Am out of ideas. Please help. Linux Mint 17.3 still works just trying to get Mint 18.2 to work. Both monitors in Mint 17.3 are set 1920 x1080 (16.9). Monitors in Mint 17.3 are listed as DVI-I-1 and DVI-D-0.

Hello. I am quite new to Linux and just to try to be familiar with linux. But every time when face problems then lost my motivation to use linux and it stops for me to try linux more for longer time. It happened many times and I really go away from Windows..
I have now recently installed cinnamon 19 version . I got following error after i was fixing some sound problems.

Xsession: unable to launch «cinnamon-session-cinnamon» X session — «cinnamon-session-cinnamon» not found; falling back to default session.

When I click Ok I get a black screen and can only see my cursor. What can I do to solve this?

Many thanks for this. For whatever reason my LM19 install suddenly got this error message on login and these steps helped me fix it.

My only comment would be that I had to keep hitting the Ctl-Alt F1 step as it was never quite clear as which black/blank screen it was.

To get Nautilus used as preferred application(should have used the system
settings) and saving space, I removed Nemo. Which removed Cinnamon as a
dependency. This was the problem. Replaced et voila! Moral of the story,
leave Nemo alone. (OK, guess there’s another way to get rid of Nemo).

‘Type Cntrl+Alt+F1’ — was the gem, I’ve been looking for.

Saved me many hours of grief with the ctrl-alt F1 prescription — my only deviation was to instruct «reboot» while still in command line rather than getting out and following the usual procedure. Worked fine. Many thanks! Otherwise my next step might have been a reinstall and a lot of repeated program downloading and personalizing.

Situation: Thinkpad T420 with LMDE Cindy recently installed (and loving it). I spent some time installing many new programs from the software manager, but paid no attention to what programs it said would be UNinstalled in the course of installations, so whether it was the loss of Nemo or something else, I don’t know.

But I had to do a cold shutdown when I tried out a new program for keyboard management (wanted to re-purpose the caps lock key) and it seemed to be misbehaving. Then attempted reboots put me in a loop of failures. No blank screen, but unfamiliar ones with a repeat of the topic message that I web-searched on to get me here, and a repeat cycle through invitations to login and subsequent failure reports like ‘root locked’. Then, I came here and . . WHEW — RELIEF!

guys this is the error that I got when I tried to log in to my pc just the other day.
I use mint19 and I don’t have a lot of experience with linux.
So after doing lots of research, I didn’t find any solution.

I installed Linux Mint last week and after a adding software and customizing I am now getting the same error which seems to be fairly common and possibly caused by deleting software packages that have made a dependency on the desktop and then delete it. In my case the Gnome Online Accounts manager which is simply something I absolutley do NOT want as any API to internet accounts like google simply rape everything they can if given access to a machine.

However The Cntrl-Alt-F1 or F2 did not work as well. The login creditials are correct. written down as well as they work to get me to the Unable to launch.. error where an incorrect password throws a an invalid password error.
I can’t get to a login prompt before the Gui login screen comes up for some reason.

Any Ideas? Escpecially helpful would be how to know when removing software will trash the OS. I would think any add ons would be more moduler.
