Using the Upwork Desktop App for Payment Protection and Collaboration

The Upwork Desktop App was created for freelancers like you to make it easy to collaborate with clients and qualify for the Hourly Payment Protection program. By using the Desktop App, you can chat in real time from your desktop. Also, as a freelancer, you can use the app to log time on hourly contracts.

To download the Desktop App, go to your freelancer profile page, and install the software. After doing so, when you’re ready to start work on your project, select the correct contract, and use the toggle switch to turn on logging.

When you’re tracking time, the app will take six screenshots of your computer screen per hour. These snapshots can be taken at any time when you’re working. The screenshots will capture anything visible on your screen or you can set your preferences to only capture the active window you’re currently working on. The screenshots will be shared with your client via your Work Diary. The Desktop App also logs your activity level by counting the number of mouse clicks and keystrokes; this activity will be automatically uploaded and shared with your client as well.

You can delete snapshots from your Work Diary, so your client doesn’t get charged for time you weren’t working on their project. You have until the end of each billing cycle on Sundays to remove any unwanted screenshots, but this means it won’t be included in your billing invoice. Make sure you enter memos to describe the work you’ve completed during every billing cycle; this is important for qualifying for Upwork Hourly Protection.

Make sure to verify your client has a payment method in place before you start logging time with the Desktop App. Look for a green check mark under the About the Client section on the client’s job posting page.

Для того, чтобы начать отслеживание времени, нужно выбрать подходящий проект из списка, написать небольшое описание над чем вы сейчас работаете и нажать start tracking.

Минимальный отрезок времени, за которой происходит оплата — 10 минут. Раз в десять минут программа делает скриншот рабочего стола и добавляет его в дневник разработки.

Программа отслеживает, как часто вы пользуетесь мышкой или клавиатурой и отображает это в дневнике фрилансера, который доступен клиенту. Таким образом, если вы не будите пользоваться устройствами ввода, то клиент это увидит и у него могут быть сомнения в эффективности вашей работы.

Стоит ли удалять промежутки с «плохими» скриншотами, или с неполной шкалой активности, зависит от ваших отношений и договоренностями с клиентом. Лично я всегда удаляю не подходящие промежутки, чтобы клиент видел во мне профессионала, который тратит все силы на работу. Если у клиента будут подозрения касаемо моей честности отслеживания рабочих часов, то сложно вести коммуникацию и просить повышение рабочей ставки.

Чат Upwork Messenger

Upwork Messenger — это чат внутри Upwork, который доступен в web версии, мобильных приложениях и в Upwork Desktop App.

Многие фрилансеры и клиенты не любят общаться в мессенджере, так как Upwork часто находится офлайн, и поэтому не всегда есть возможность связаться друг с другом или посмотреть историю переписки. Хотя в этом направлении все улучшается со временем. Также люди привыкли общаться в других мессенджерах, и многим сложно переключится, но Upwork Messenger очень важен, так как именно на договоренности в нем смотрит support Upwork при разрешении споров. Хотя я стараюсь в большинстве случаев избегать диспутов и общения с поддержкой, но это также хороший психологический рычаг давления на клиентов. Если заказчики подтвердили договоренности в мессенджере Upwork, а потом от них пытаются отказаться, то им можно пригрозить поддержкой (да и сами они это понимают), а если договоренности были только устными в skype и не были продублированы через чат Upwork, то клиент может подумать, что ими можно пренебречь, так как все равно доказательств нет.

Using/Installing Upwork Desktop App on a Chromebook with Linux Virtual Machine

First off, you can’t do this on all Chromebooks that I know of, but there may be even more elaborate hacks for more advanced users.

I’m using a WalMart HP Chromebook I bought on sale for $169. Originally I was disappointed that I couldn’t register it as a device and therefore couldn’t download apps or programs to use it like I would a normal computer. Then the Linux (Beta) option appeared in my settings last week, and I knew that was about to change.

This happened right about the time I started to look on Upwork for contracts, since I’ve been traveling a while and need to replenish funds for more adventures. I was frustrated. I even thought about getting a normal laptop so I could run my typical design programs. Worse, it was starting to look like I couldn’t get paid for my work on Upwork because I couldn’t track time. So I installed the Linux Virtual Machine (LVM) to see if it would work.

When my first attempt to install the app in the LVM didn’t work, I looked into other methods and discovered that there are many settings in Chrome that affect your ability to use unproven (beta) apps. This article was a good resource. Keep that in mind if you get any errors while trying to do this. Otherwise, it was easy. Here’s the process:

1. Activate Linux beta if your Chromebook supports this. You’ll know because it gives you an option when you go to Settings and scroll through the options. Turn on the switch and follow directions to install. You’ll have to read what version of Linux installs. Mine happened to be Debian 9 (stretch).
2. I’m not sure if it’s necessary, but I activated the Crostini option in: Chrome://flags.
3. Once in the Linux terminal, I updated Linux using the command: sudo apt update
4. I upgraded installed components using command: sudo apt upgrade
5. The first app I installed was Chrome
6. Open Chrome in the LVM with the command google-chrome.As you would in a normal browser, navigate to the download page for the Upwork desktop app. If the site detects a valid version of Linux, it will show you a drop down file. Select the one that matches your version of Linux and download.
7. Once downloaded, it will appear in your file system downloads. My computer generated a Linux downloads folder when it installed. That’s where I found it.
8. By “two-finger” clicking to open the file and select “Install with Linux (beta), it will install within your virtual machine. If there are any errors, then there may be some additional updates you have to run. Mine didn’t work the first time, so I re-ininstalled Linux, and re-ran the updates and upgrades. After that it installed correctly.

Here’s what you should see along the way:

How to Install UpWork on Ubuntu 16.04 64bit?

When I try to install the upwork_amd64.deb package in Software, it shows:

If you have already downloaded the .deb file from Upwork website and have problems installing it with the Software Center try using the terminal command:

you can install like below steps:

Download the .Debian-based 64-bit (Standard) version

Open Terminal [ctrl+alt+t]

GO to Downloads folder: cd Downloads

Run these commands

After finish the processing let’s search this app at start menu. Happy Freelancing! 🙂

You can check the package name you downloaded.
For me, it is upwork_5.5.0.11_amd64.deb , and I install it as follows:

Any update upon the app support for Ubuntu 20.04 both standard and beta versions are not able to install.

Could you please try and uninstall previous versions of the Upwork Desktop App first. And follow these steps to install the Upwork Desktop App on Linux:

• Select the file and click Install Package
• Click here for distribution-specific installation instructions
