What is macam?
macam is a driver for USB webcams on Mac OS X. It allows hundreds of USB webcams to be used by many Mac OS X video-aware applications. The aim is to support as many webcams as possible.
In addition, macam also supports downloading of images from some dual-mode cameras. macam especially tries to support those cameras not supported by Apple or by their manufacturers.
macam consist of an application and a component. Run the macam application to verify whether your camera works with your Mac and your USB setup. The component is the actual driver that allows other applications to access the video-stream. (note: iChat does not recognize most USB webcams unless you install iChatUSBCam — this is shareware unrelated to macam)
Many thanks to the spca5xx/gspca Linux webcam driver project, especially Michel Xhaard and friends. Their hard work and helpfulness have made many of the recent advances possible.
If you have a camera and Mac OS X, please help out by testing and reporting the results. Thanks!
Supported Cameras
macam supports several hundred different cameras! Many Logitech, Creative and other name brand cameras are supported, as are a large number of generic, and store-branded cameras. Thus many cameras are supported that we have not even heard about.
Here is a list of cameras with macam support indicated. Remember that this list is necessarily incomplete and not always up to date; so please try the macam application with your camera before abandoning hope. If your camera is not on the list, or if the support is different from what is indicated, please let us know!
Latest Version (0.9.2)
The most recent version of macam is release 0.9.2, available here. This version adds support for a number of webcams. In particluar the PS3 Eye, which requires USB2, but has a phenomenal picture. Many other webcams have been added, all the cameras from the gspca project should work (although no guarantees are provided). There is better support for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), as the NSLock console warning messages should be gone. The driver for the PAC207 has been improved in many ways, this chip is used in many cheap webcams.
If the latest version does not work, try the latest cvs-build, available here. It may support more cameras and fix bugs, even if it is not ready for release.

USB WebCam Driver for Mac
Softonic review
USB driver for webcams on Macs
If you’re having problems getting a webcam to work with your Mac, then try installing USB WebCam Driver.
USB WebCam Driver works with most major webcam manufacturers. This trial version however is limited to 30 minutes at a time which means you have to unplug and reconnect your camera to keep using it. Please note that unless you have a FireWire or Philips camera, your serial number is tied to the computer you register on, and you’ll need that to register the driver if you intend to keep it.
Installing the Driver
You don’t have to have your camera connected when you install USB WebCam Driver but you may need to identify the type of camera you have before the driver will recognize it. Just change the name that appears in the QuickTime Video Settings dialog.
The developers encourage users to test the driver thoroughly before purchasing it, including with supported applications such as Skype, Facetime etc.
If you’re suffering from webcam driver problems on your Mac, USB WebCam Driver may be your solution.

Author’s review
Your peripherals are only as good as the device drivers that run them. And it’s not unusual for the software bundled with a PC card or camera or whatever not to support all of the hardware features.
For example, lots of wireless PC cards and webcams out there don’t work with Macs out of the box. Not because they can’t, mind you. All you need is the right driver.

QUESTION
I used to use this app often, and it was good! It did exactly what it says it does, and my my work flow eaiser. I was happy with it.
ALTHOUGH, I recently began doing this again, and was dissapointed to be met with a error message as soon as I opened the app saying
«Unfortunately there was an error when trying to acsess the camera. Try again or acsess a differnt one.»
I don’t understand, when I go to the preferneces the facetime camera is already selected, which is the only camera and the same camera im useing and have always used. Any idea what could have cause this error? I liek the app, but i can’t use it now 🙂 please let me know! thankyou
Developer Response ,
Thank you for your question. If you are using Catalina, please check your security settings. Go to System Preferences / Security & Privacy / Camera — and make sure that Quick Camera has access to the camera.
Simple interface for a USB microscope
I bought a simple USB microscope. Quick Camera gives you the image on the screen. No fuss. It used to require a screen capture to save an image. Now image save is an option.
Only 4 stars because there are no preferences to set a file name prefix. Save always brings up a dialog. For microscopy it is often the case you want to do a bunch of rapid images. A single keypress should be allowed to get pics one after another. A C format string with variables for time, sequece, next number, etc. would be a good addition.
Perfect Job!
I was thinking yesterday — wouldn’t it be cool to have an app that could show the camera? And there I found this amazing little tool. Does everything really well. Even allows us to mirror the display. Extremely happy and will be using this a lot.
Only thing I noticed is that it is best to start this up before other camera applications, to make sure that you can capture the camera stream that you want.
Oh also, I was looking for a way to make this app float on top and couldn’t find any. After some head scratching I realized that it was already floating on top when I had it in borderless mode.
One feature that would be nice is to be able to resize the window in proportion to the video content, in other words, without black bars on either the top or sides. But that’s a small thing to work around.
