Windows 10 Start Menu Pinned Tiles Location?
Where are the start menu pinned tiles located in Windows 10? Example: I pin Weather, Notepad, and Calculator to the start menu. Where does this data get written? In Windows 7 it was under Program Data>Microsoft>Windows>Start Menu. It appears to have moved in Windows 10. Is it a folder I just haven’t been able to find, or is it a registry key now?

could have saved a little time to let us know we have to make hidden files seen to find the folders in the path you gave. I was not allowed access to the Start Menu folder but was able to move a file to it after giving Admin permission.

Windows 10

AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
Edge, Calc, Photos, Paint 3D
CALC.EXE
MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge.exe» -ServerName:MicrosoftEdge.AppXdnhjhccw3zf0j06tkg3jtqr00qdm0khc.mca
Windows.Photos_2017.18062.13720.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Microsoft.Photos.exe» -ServerName:App.AppXzst44mncqdg84v7sv6p7yznqwssy6f7f.mca
View.exe» -ServerName:Microsoft.MSPaint.AppX437q68k2qc2asvaagas2prv9tjej6ja9.mca
How to Backup and Restore pinned Taskbar items in Windows 10
The Taskbar is one of the most used interfaces in Windows. We all like to pin most used programs, even shortcuts with extra privileges, and automated tasks. This is much better than the Start Menu, and tiles to be very frank. That said, if any Windows Update messes up your system, or if you are switching to another PC, setting up the taskbar with the same set of programs is not easy. This post will show you how to backup and restore pinned Taskbar items in Windows 10.
Backup & restore pinned Taskbar items
Manually Backup
1: Type the following in the Run prompt:
This will open the folder which stores all the shortcuts or the pinned items on the taskbar.
2: Copy all the files from there, and paste it elsewhere as a backup – say into – E:\Pinned Items Backup\pinnedshortcuts.
3: Type Regedit in the Run prompt to open the Registry Editor. Click Yes on the User Account Control dialog box when it appears. Next, navigate to the following key:
4: Right-click on the Taskband folder and select Export.
5: Save this file (.reg) extension, to another location – say E:\Pinned Items Backup\ folder. Name it as, say, tb-pinned-items.reg.
6: Close the Registry Editor.
Manually Restore
If you are using it for some other computer, make sure to copy all the files to one of the drives first, and then follow the steps below:
1: Type the following in the Run prompt:
This is the same folder from where we copied all the shortcuts in the previous section. Keep it open.
2: Open the backup folder ( In our case it is E:\ Pinned Items Backup\ pinnedshortcuts – where you saved all the pinned items) and copy all the files.
3: Switch to the ‘Taskbar folder’ of Step 1, and paste all your files into it. If there is any conflict, replace it with your own set of files.
4: Switch to E:\ Pinned Items Backup\ pinnedshortcuts, and double-click on tb-pinned-items.reg. If you get a UAC prompt, say yes. This will add the registry file into the main registry hub. You will get a dialog box that will confirm that data has been successfully added to the registry. Click OK.
6: You will not see the items appear on the taskbar instantly. We need to restart Windows Explorer here. Open Task Manager using ALT + CTRL + DEL. Find Windows Explorer in the list, right-click on it and select Restart.
This will restart Windows Explorer, and you should see all the shortcuts right on the task manager now. Exit Task Manager.
Automatically backup & restore pinned Taskbar items
All this can be automated, but we had to share the hard part first, so you understand what’s going on behind the hood. We will create two bat files named ‘Backup Pinned Taskbar Items’ and ‘Restore Pinned Taskbar Items’. It will then be super smooth. Follow the steps below:
Automatically Backup
1: Open Notepad, and paste the below-mentioned details in it. Then save it as ‘Backup Pinned Taskbar Items.bat’.
2: Run this bat file with admin privileges.
Automatically Restore
1: Open Notepad, and paste the below-mentioned details in it. Then save it as ‘Restore Pinned Taskbar Items.bat’.
2: Run this bat file with admin privileges.
The drawback of this process
We did notice that any pinned apps downloaded from the Store don’t appear in these places. Any items which are downloaded & installed separately from the internet, and then pinned appear here. While we are looking at ways we can also back up the items from Store, seems Microsoft had been strict on its location and might be handling it completely from the registry. We will keep you posted on this.

How to Turn off Windows 10 password / pin
I can’t seem to figure out how to turn off the windows 10 password/pin upon startup of the computer.
Ever since I upgraded from Windows 7 to windows 10, it now requires that I input my password/pin every time I turn on the computer. This is a personal desktop at home, I do not need a password. How do I skip this process?

Hi and thank you for the tip.
However, I’ve done just what you suggested and it still requires me to put in a password. I go and look and it says no password required.
Also have the screen sleep issue. I have it set to sleep after an hour and it sleeps after 30 seconds. It won’t change.

I recently wrote that the info for disengaging password start worked- actually, it didn’t! I had tried to test it by hitting «sleep» and I got back on without the password. But when it actually slept on it’s own, the password was still required!
Dang. I went through the steps a third time and the setting I gave was still there: no password required. I even restarted the computer and still- I need a password.
AND- I too have the issue of the «sleep» happening very quickly, even though my settings are for much longer.
that’s happened with Window 8.1 and with the upgrade to 10.
I will read more to see if anyone else has had success, but wanted to add register that yet another user is having the same problems.
Thanks for any help.

I see your post is old and I hoped you resolved by now but for benefit of new users of Win 10 I will answer anyway.
I never use PW on my personal home comp and don’t want to
which worked fine upon install and use UNTIL I signed up for photo application
Then the login screen required my Hotmail address for MS account with password needed
I FINALLY FIXED IT
and not with suggestion here for netplwiz, which failed multiple times
- Control panel
- User accounts
- forces you to verify and sign in to email one more time (what we are trying to get rid of)
- Remove email account as default user
- choose your local comp name
- will ask for a new password (we don’t want it)
- LEAVE IT BLANK
- goes to login under your original name
- no password. needed anymore
what a giant PIA win 10
waiting to see if a sign in to apps reverses this fix
