New modern way to install Tor Browser in Kali Linux

Tor Browser is a portable program that you just download, unzip and run. To simplify this procedure, you can use the Tor Browser Launcher package, which is available in many distributions.

Tor Browser Launcher is intended to make Tor Browser easier to install and use for GNU/Linux users. You install torbrowser-launcher from your distribution’s package manager and it handles everything else:

  • Downloads and installs the most recent version of Tor Browser in your language and for your computer’s architecture, or launches Tor Browser if it’s already installed (Tor Browser will automatically update itself)
  • Verifies Tor Browser’s signature for you, to ensure the version you downloaded was cryptographically signed by Tor developers and was not tampered with
  • Adds «Tor Browser» and «Tor Browser Launcher Settings» application launcher to your desktop environment’s menu
  • Includes AppArmor profiles to make a Tor Browser compromise not as bad
  • Optionally plays a modem sound when you open Tor Browser (because Tor is so slow)

Installing Tor Browser Launcher:

Press “Connect” and wait for your system is connected to the Tor network.

Enter any URL you wish to surf with anonymity:

To verify your IP just visit suip.biz:

If you would like to change your current IP, select ‘Onion’ icon and ‘New Tor Circuit for this Site’.

Old way to install Tor Browser in Kali Linux

Tor Browser is absent in Kali Linux repository. In addition, the Tor Browser default behavior does not let you run the program as root. Indeed, it is not a serious problem. This guide will show you the easy way to install and run Tor Browser in Kali Linux in super user account.

To make Tor Browser working on Kali Linux it is enough to run the script. The sctipt is formed as a single command line, so you can copy-paste it to your terminal windows. For 64-bit systems use:

For 32-bit systems use:

I will explain what the script does. It downloads the last version of Tor Browser from the official web site (https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en), unpacks the archive, moves the result to the proper directory, patches the launcher to make Tor Browser working from root and fixes the issue with permissions.

To start Tor Browser you can issue in Terminal:

Press “Connect” and wait for your system is connected to the Tor network.

Enter any URL you wish to surf with anonymity:

Install and Configure TOR in Kali Linux [2017]

Tor (www.torproject.org) is an open source implementation of the third generation onion routing that provides free access to an anonymous proxy network. Onion routing enables online anonymity by encrypting user traffic and then transmitting it through a series of onion routers.

At each router, a layer of encryption is removed to obtain routing information, and the message is then transmitted to the next node. It has been likened to the process of gradually peeling an onion, hence the name. It protects against traffic analysis attacks by guarding the source and destination of a user’s IP traffic.

To install Tor, perform the following steps:

1. Issue the apt-get update and apt-get upgrade commands,

and then use the following command:

Command: apt-get install tor

2. Once Tor is installed, edit the proxychains.conf file located in the /etc directory.

This file dictates the number and order of proxies that the test system will use on the way to the Tor network. proxy servers may be down, or they may be experiencing a heavy load (causing slow or latent connections); if this occurs, a defined or strict proxychain will fail because an expected link is missing.

Therefore, disable the use of (strict_chains) and enable (dynamic_chains), which ensures that the connection will be routed, as shown in the following screenshot:

3. Next, edit the [ProxyList] section to ensure that the socks5 proxy is present, as shown in the following screenshot:

Open proxies can be easily found online and added to the proxychains file. Testers can take advantage of this to further obfuscate their identity.

For example, if there are reports that a certain country or block of IP addresses has been responsible for recent online attacks, look for open proxies from that location and add them to your list, or a separate configuration file.

4. To start the Tor service from a terminal window, enter the following command:

Command: service tor start

And to verify that Tor has started by using the following command:

Command: service tor status

5. It is important to verify that the Tor network is working and providing anonymous connectivity. Verify your source IP address first. From a terminal, enter the following command:

Command: proxychains iceweasel www.whatismyipaddress.com

You can also verify that Tor is functioning properly by accessing https://check.torproject.org.

Most command lines can be run from the console using proxychains to access the Tor network.

To download tor-bundle you need to download the package from their original website by clicking this link and extract the package by typing “tar -xvf tor*“.

Now to run tor-browser, you need to run a file which can be located at /root/Downloads/tor*/Browser/start-tor-browser But sometimes you’ll get an error like “The Tor Browser Bundle should not be run as root. Exiting.” as shown in below screenshot.

You can simply fix this issue by editing the same file i.e. “gedit start-tor-browser” and comment the below lines as shown in below screenshot.

# if [ “`id -u`” -eq 0 ]; then
# complain “The Tor Browser Bundle should not be run as root. Exiting.”
# exit 1
# fi

When using Tor, some considerations to be kept in mind are as follows:

  • Tor provides an anonymizing service, but it does not guarantee privacy. Owners of the exit nodes are able to sniff traffic, and reportedly may be able to access user credentials.
  • Vulnerabilities in the Tor Browser Bundle have reportedly been used by law enforcement to exploit systems and gain user information.
  • ProxyChains does not handle UDP traffic.
  • Some applications and services cannot run over this environment—in particular, Metasploit and nmap may break. The stealth SYN scan of nmap breaks out of proxychains and the connect scan is invoked instead; this can leak information to the target.
  • Some browser applications (ActiveX, Adobe’s PDF applications, Flash, Java, RealPlay, and QuickTime) can be used to obtain your IP address.
  • Ensure that you clear and block cookies before browsing.

Install TOR on Kali Linux Tutorial

What is Tor?

Simply , TOR is a web browser that will keep you anonymous . Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy.

This guide guides your through installing tor in Kali Linux.

Why anonymity matters?

Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location.

Install TOR on Kali Linux Tutorial

Step 1: Getting tor service ready

There are 3 ways of installing Tor service in Kali Linux. You can install Tor by following any of these options:

Option #1: Install Tor from Kali Repository

Tor is available in Kali repository, to install it directly from the repository open your Terminal and type this:

If no error occurs, follow the second step.

Option #2: Install Tor from Debian Wheezy Repository

If you can’t install Tor using the first method then you may try this option. In this way we are going to add the official Tor repository according to our Debian distribution. Not to be confused, Kali is actually based on Debian and it uses the package management from “Wheezy”. So we are going to use “Wheezy” as our distribution.
Now open your terminal and follow these steps:

Step #1: Add repo to sources.list file

Lets add the distribution in the list by opening the sources.list file

Now add the following line at the bottom of the file,

Step #2: Add GPG Keys

Now we need to add the gpg key used to sign the packages by running the following commands:

Step #3: Update package lists

Lets refresh our sources:

Step #4: Install singing keys

Now, before installing the Tor we must add the signing key,

Step #5: Install Tor from Debian repository

Now Tor should be installed!
If no error occurs, follow the second step.

Option #3: Install Tor from development branch

If you are an advanced user and you want to install Tor using the development branch then this method is for you.

Step #1: Add Tor project repository to sources.list

You need to add a different set of lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:

Step #2: Add GPG keys, keyring and install Tor

Then run the following commands at your command prompt:

Now Tor should be installed!
If no error occurs, follow the second step.
Note: This release will provide you more features but it contains bugs too.

Option #4: Build and Install Tor from sources

If you want to build your own debs from source you must first add an appropriate deb-src line to sources.list.

You also need to install the necessary packages to build your own debs and the packages needed to build Tor:

Then you can build Tor in

Now you can install the new package:

Step #2: Downloading and Running Tor bundle

Download the Tor Bundle from here,
https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en
Download the architecture-appropriate file above, save it somewhere, then run one of the following two commands to extract the package archive:

or (for the 64-bit version):

(where LANG is the language listed in the filename).
Once that’s done, switch to the Tor browser directory by running:

(where LANG is the language listed in the filename).
To run the Tor Browser Bundle, execute the start-tor-browser script:

This will launch Vidalia and once that connects to Tor, it will launch Firefox .
Note: Do not unpack or run TBB as root. (though in Kali Linux, it doesn’t make any differences .

How To Install Tor Browser In Kali Linux

Tor is free software and an open network. Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. You can read more at TorProject.

How To Install Tor Browser In Kali Linux Using Apt

  • Open a terminal window
  • Run apt-get update
  • Run apt-get install tor torbrowser-launcher and select Y at the prompt

Now you’ll have a new Tor Browser application in the Applications menu under Usual Applications and Internet. This shortcut will only work if you’re not running as the root user. See the instructions below if you’re running Kali as root.

How To Install Tor Browser In Kali Linux Manually

  • Download the Tor Bundle from here: Tor Bundle Download
  • Download a package called torbrowser-launcher which can be found here: GitHub – TorBrowser-Launcher
  • Download the architecture-appropriate file above, save it somewhere, then run the tar command to extract the package from the download directory: tar -xvf tor*
This command assumes this is the only file in the directory that starts with “tor”.
  • To run the Tor Browser Bundle, execute the start-tor-browser script from the directory you just extracted: ./start-tor-browser.desktop

This will launch Vidalia and once that connects to Tor, it will launch Firefox.

How To Run Tor While Logged In As Root

If you’re running Kali Linux as root, you might get an error saying you can’t run Tor as root. Some website will tell you to edit the launcher script, but that is not the recommended method. Instead, follow the instructions below to add a new non-root user.

You can create a new user and configure Tor to run as that user even though you’re logged in as root. To do so, run these commands from Terminal:

  • adduser —home /home/toruser toruser (or whatever username you want to use)
You’ll be prompted to create a password, but you don’t really need to save it unless you want to actually login as this user. Fill in the other prompts as needed.
  • You’ll need to run xhost si:localuser:toruser from Terminal to get the new user listed in xhost.
  • To run Tor as the new user, use this command from Terminal: sudo -u toruser -H torbrowser-launcher

You can also edit the Applications menu shortcut, but it’ll require another app to get installed:

  • Run apt-get install alacarte from Terminal
  • Run alacarte from Terminal after the app is installed
  • Browse through your Applications menu under Usual Applications >Internet and find Tor Browser and click Properties
  • Edit the command box and change it to sudo -u toruser -H torbrowser-launcher %u
  • Click OK and Close

If you’re running the latest version of Kali that uses XFCE as the default desktop environment then you can’t use alacarte to edit the application menu. Instead, navigate to the Usual Applications folder and Internet. Then right-click on Tor Browser and edit the command entry to be sudo -u toruser -H torbrowser-launcher %u .
