Circular update with libutil-linux

Updating my system results in the following and I cannot get it to go away. I cannot remove any package because the package that needs to be removed has lots and lots of dependencies. Also saying no to the package that has a conflict ends the update. How do I fix this?

pacman -Syu util-linux-libs util-linux:

WorMzy I installed it using pikaur I guess. About a year ago and have had no problems since. A bit of a weird question, there is not a lot of ways to install packages lol (do not comment on that, then you are wasting everybodys time).

Install util-linux-selinux 2.36-4 and util-linux-libs-selinux 2.36-4 in the same transaction before the update or add systemd to the list of variant packages to replace.

If you’re going to replace low-level packages like this, you really need to be building them in a chroot and adding them to a local repo. You are also responsible for keeping them up to date.

With the questions you’re asking, I would strongly advise going back to the official packages.

Install util-linux-selinux 2.36-4 and util-linux-libs-selinux 2.36-4 in the same transaction before the update or add systemd to the list of variant packages to replace.

Thanks for the tip, it fixed it! Finally someone who does not come up with unproductive comments such as «where did you install the package» or random quotes of my comments!

[SOLVED] Cant sudo pacman -Syu

Hello,
so when i try to run pacman -Syu
i get

when i choose yes, i get

and when i choose no i get

and when i choose yes there i get the could not fully load metadata error.
So what can i do that i can upgrade (-Syu) my system?

I don’t believe the renaming of libutil-linux is related to the problem with python-pygments. Fix (reinstall) python-pygments first then upgrade.

Did you try again (after some time, say 10minutes — 3 hours)?

Sometimes it can happen that a mirror is not in sync / in the middle of a sync when you do your upgrade, and IIRC then you can see errors like this (EDIT: about metadata. Skunktrader is right in that the problem has nothing to do with renaming of libutil-linux). After it has properly synced, and you try to upgrade again, the upgrade should pass.

If that doesn’t work, you could try to change your mirror.

If that *still* doesn’t work, I suppose you could try pacman -Syyu. That is rarely needed to resolve any problems and should be run rarely (with two «y»‘s). Someone will correct me if this is unnecessary / bad idea!

skunktrader, reinstall you mean remove and install the package?

So that doesnt work
also sudo pacman -U cant find or read the package, even if pacman -R found it.
Wild Penguin, yes i tried again. Yesterday it also didnt worked.
pacman -Syyu is the same error as the first.
im going to try another mirror

Unlikely, that was literally just a package rename with no functional change whatsoever. But if you think it is the cause, check your pacman cache for the old package, and maybe heed that warning and do a reboot.

The running kernel was 5.8.9.arch2 when you tried gparted again? (uname -r)

5.8.9.arch2-1 fixes the issue; and I still have the same terminal output as @latgarf.

Strange. this «\xe2\x97\x8f» string seems to represent a UTF-8 character, corresponding to unicode U+258F. [1]
