VBoxManage setextradata «MacOS» «VBoxInternal2/SmcDeviceKey» «ourhardworkbythesewordsguardedpleasedontsteal(c)AppleComputerInc»

Enabling Bluetooth in VirtualBox
VirtualBox guest OS doesn’t recognize Bluetooth adapter by default. Here is how to enable the built in Bluetooth adapter for Ubuntu guest on Windows host. OS and the version I used are below.
Host: Windows 10
Guest: Ubuntu 16.04
Here is the list of contents of this post.
Assumptions
There are some prerequisites before starting the steps.
- Windows PC with Bluetooth Adapter
- Ubuntu installed as VirtualBox guest OS and running on Windows PC
- VirtualBox Guest Additions installed on Ubuntu guest OS
Steps
1. Disable Bluetooth Adapter on Windows
1-1. Launch “Device Manager” (right-click on Windows icon at left bottom corner, then select “Device Manager”)
1-2. Disable Bluetooth adapter (right-click on your Bluetooth device and select “Disable device”)
2. Launch Ubuntu Linux
2-1. Launch “Oracle VM VirtualBox”.
2-2. Select your Ubuntu guest and click on “Start” icon on “Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager” window.
3. Enable Bluetooth Adapter on Windows
3-1. Go back to Device Manager, enable the Bluetooth adapter. (right-click on the Bluetooth device and select “Enable device”)
4. Enable Bluetooth Adapter on Ubuntu (Guest)
4-1. In “Oracle VM VirtualBox” window, select “Devices” > “USB” from the top menu bar.
4-2. Then, select Bluetooth adapter to enable.
5. Verify
5-1. Check if Bluetooth is enabled on Ubuntu by typing the command below.
If everything is fine, you should be able to see something like below. Be sure it says “UP RUNNING” (Line 4 in the example below).

Apple Bluetooth
by rukqoa » 14. Jan 2009, 17:48
I have a MacBook. They have built-in bluetooth adapter. However, when in virtualbox, they do not seem to work.
1. The control panel does not have a «bluetooth devices» option.
2. There is no «service» called bluetooth or anything similar.
3. I have turned off bluetooth in mac.
4. It gives me this error:
Code: Select all Expand viewCollapse view USB device ‘Apple, Inc. Bluetooth USB Host Controller’ with UUID
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
HostUSBDevice
Interface:
IHostUSBDevice <173b4b44-d268-4334-a00d-b6521c9a740a>
Callee:
IConsole
I conclude that bluetooth must still be used by mac, even though i have turned it off.
Is there a way to..
1. Disable bluetooth in mac temporarily.
2. Make VirtualBox steal the bluetooth from mac.

I have your same problem and i have found what is the prblem (not the solution, too ).
The problem is among VirtualBox tickets ( http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/2372 ) and regards the daemon blued (that handle bluetooth device) that is always active; if you kill it, it respawn .
Is here a manner to kill this daemon?
Probably if it could be possible il could be more useful implementing bluetooth functionality on VirtualBox using the daemon interface.
Hi

P.S.: Please contact if someone find a solution.

Try:
sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.blued.plist
To reload:
sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.blued.plist

Dear users,
I’ve just join this board only to answer this topic, I hope I could help you.
I need to develop under J2ME and use bluetooth api. Under Mac OSX is very diffucult to find all the tools to develop in j2me. expecially for bt api. so the better way is to virtual a windows system in which I install all the tools needed to develop under mobile java. my problem is to let nokia virtual phone talk with bt stack of win. or better Virtual Box to use BT stack of my MAC OSX. reading your post I tried some configuration.
the better is:
start your Virtual machine (you can’t use BT now because it returns an error, os x is using BT stack again).
turn off your internal bluetooth card from the OS X menù.
plug in a BT USB key, now OSX start bt automatically and you cannot turn it off via GUI Command on your OS.
Go to Virtual machine and click on the bottom icon of usb devices (with your guest os active).
Now you can see two USB BT devices and one of them is free. I don’t know exactly what it is, but when I clicked on one of them, Win on my guest os start to find a BT device and install it. Now I can use BT on a guest os.
I hope that I could be clear to explain the way, don’t esitate to write.
Bye

I tried this, but I still get the «in use by someone else» error.

I found a way to get the integrated BT-module to work within VirtualBox, but it is a little bit complicated. You have to unload the Apple Bluetooth-Daemon as well as some kernel extensions. Fortunately, this does not require a reboot!
To accomplish this, you need to be logged in as superuser (root) in the terminal.
To unload the Bluetooth-Daemon, type
Code: Select all Expand viewCollapse view launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.blued.plist
Afterwards, try to unload the AppleIOBluetoothHCIController kernel extension, via
Code: Select all Expand viewCollapse view kextunload -b com.apple.driver.AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController
This might not work when the AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController is still referenced by another kernel extension. If unloading fails, type
in terminal to find out which other kernel extensions refer to the AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController. Unload all these kernel extensions via kextunload (in my case on my MacBook 13″ I also had to unload «BroadcomUSBBluetoothHCIController»), then try unloading the AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController again.
Afterwards, run VirtualBox and select the Bluetooth-Module from the USB-devices menu. It should now integrate into the VM and can then be used within Windows. Windows does not recognize that it is a BT-Module, so you have to install the Apple Bootcamp drivers.

VB 5.0.14 disables bluetooth on OSX 10.11.3 host
Reported by: | esLivingston | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | other | Version: | VirtualBox 5.0.14 |
Keywords: | OSX bluetooth | Cc: | |
Guest type: | all | Host type: | Mac OS X |
Description
VB 5.0.14 disables bluetooth on an iMac running OSX 10.11.3 thereby preventing the use of the wireless keyboard and trackpad. Hence the loss of control of both host and guest!
The only(?) way out of this is to force a reboot of the system using power switch.
This is not a problem with VB 5.0.10

Not enough information. At which point is bluetooth disabled? My guess is that you established a blank USB filter which matches to every USB device and as soon as you start your VM, the bluethooth USB device is passed to the guest and not avilable for the host anymore.
comment:2 Changed 6 years ago by kai_m_becker
Same here. The reason is indeed an empty USB filter which «steals» the complete Bluetooth of the (Mac) Host, although it was actively connected to the Host OS. Previous versions of VirtualBox didn’t grab already connected devices; neither Bluetooth nor any USB.
Since empty USB filters are very convenient to «catch all» _newly_ connected devices, e.g. memory sticks, test hardware, etc. whose IDs are not known before, it would be nice to return to the previous behaviour, i.e. «don’t grab already connected hardware».

The same problem exists in the latest release (5.0.16) as tried today.
Apologies for not providing more information sooner.
The bluetooth keyboard and trackpad are disabled during the start-up of a virtual machine.
The comments by both frank and kai_m_backer about the existence of an empty USB filter are correct. I’ll try again without one. Thanks for the insight as to what the problem might be.
comment:4 Changed 6 years ago by esLivingston
re: presence of a blank USB filter. I still have now one present but disabled in the VM definition. This allows the VM to start-up OK with both bluetooth keyboard and trackpad working. Once the VM is running I can then enable the blank USB filter. This process allows me to run 5.0.16 OK.
It would be good if the blank USB filter behaved as it did in 5.0.10 as kai_m_backer recommends.

Hello,
I have almost the same issue on iMac 14,1 (late 2013) and iMac 17,1 (late 2015).
But this bug DOES NOT appear on iMac 11,3 (mid 2010).
The diference between this iMacs is Bluetooth version – the old one has Bluetooth 2.1 and the newer one has 4.0 and 4.1. See attached Bluetooth spec from iMac 14,1 (late 2013).
My symptoms:
I have USB keyboard and Bluetooth mouse, so when I launch any VM –> Bluetooth mouse stop work but when I press Cmd+Q, I can save VM state and quit Virtualbox. In this case Bluetooth mouse became active again several seconds after VirtualBox quit.
Affected Virtualbox versions:
5.0.12 r104815 – is the last working version
5.0.14 – 5.0.20 – is buggy versions

comment:7 Changed 5 years ago by frank
erben.fr, to me it seems that your USB mouse / bluetooth mouse (probably also attached via USB) is passed to the guest. Do you have some kind of USB filter active for your VM?

The current version(5.14) of VB appears to interfere with Bluetooth in a couple of ways. I have a late 2014 Mac Mini with Core I7 CPU running El Cap. The first and most obvious is when when system awakes from sleep mode the BT keyboard doesn’t work (mouse and track pad work normally) The keyboard enters random letters into the loggin box usually with multiple letters per key press. The only way to fix this is to remove the batteries from the keyboard, then reinstall them and reconnect. I have tried multiple keyboards and and external BT adapter and it makes no difference. The second problem is that I can’t stream music over BT reliably. Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it sounds like the music is at a low bit rate from the bottom of a well with random volume adjustments. I assumed I had a hardware problem and return the Mac to Apple. They could find any problems but reinstalled the OS. At that point everything work perfectly. However as soon as I installed VB things when haywire again. I’ve given up the BT keyboard. The streaming now mostly works, but when I start up VB it goes back to the 8bit-in-the-well sound for about 10 seconds, then returns to normal.

@Pingumann
I have a 10.11.6 host running 5.2.4+ and I’ve never had that problem. Gather all the information requested in » USB basics and troubleshooting», » 8. Asking for help», ZIP them in a single file and post it here.
Actually it would have been better if such discussions take place it the forums, but here is fine I guess.
