Catalina (macOS 15) is out, and LoTRO client does not work.

Just installed Catalina and as sure as rain, the LoTRO client does not work: The 64 Bits launcher works, but then it quits and that’s is the end of it.

Please reply if you have had different results.

Otherwise, my suggestion is to wait!

Looks to be a known thing with 32-bit support dropped in the new OS and the WINE software not available for 64-bit.

It’s really ###### that the only ones of us who found about this ahead of time are those of us who pay close attention to the forums or social media. The launcher had a single line announcement about it some days ago, but it was soon bumped out of sight by newer announcements. I can imagine that a lot of more casual players who simply like to play totally missed it, and went ahead with the Catalina update.

I did update my work computer, and sure enough, no more lotro.

I’ll hold off on updating my home computer for as long as I can, so I can continue to play the only game I ever play.

I do kind of understand their not wanting to support our hardware, but the whole thing was handled poorly, start to finish

The dedicated Mac player base has been flagging this for months, and it will not be practical or desirable for some of us to partition a drive in order to run Windows or hold off ever updating to Catalina and beyond. My workaround is to install Catalina on an additional volume and continue playing LoTRO on Mojave:

I agree that the communication could be a lot better. Only a small subset of players read the forums. A lot of Mac users are going to upgrade and be upset.

A solution is going to have to come from wine. That community seemed tied in knots about what to do last time I checked. It’s not a simple fix for them. I guess even 64-bit wine has 32-bit dependencies that can’t be straightforwardly replaced. Plus, their primary use case is making old stuff runnable, so most of their users need 32-bit.

LOTRO will not work until Wine is made all 64bit. To check the status on this go to this link:

Apple dropping support for 32bit apps was known for a very long time. Like years. Yet SSG dragged its feet on the transition and when they did they choose a framework (Wine) that didn’t support 64bits. On top of that they did the absolute minimum on warning their users about this issue. smh.

I am fortunate enough to already have a dedicated gaming pc. When they announced they would not have a native macOS client any longer I switched to lotro on windows.

Wine works fine on Catalina, provided you only try to run 64-bit Windows apps. The LOTRO Launcher is 32-bit (even though the client itself is 64-bit).

Well, yes, you could install Catalina on the new volume and migrate your work files over or work from your iCloud drive, but it’s also possible to do it the other way round, as I did, since LoTRO will be the only thing still running on Mojave after I update. I installed Mojave on the new volume and downloaded the game there. It took ages, but finally after confirming that it works , I updated to Catalina on the old volume and deleted LoTRO there.

(With an OS older than High Sierra, you could partition the drive but doing that is more fiddly than with APFS)

Thanks for that link, dansav, the article is actually quite encouraging.

I run a number of Windows programs on my Mac using Crossover, so I’ll be holding out hoping CodeWeavers does indeed solve the problems they’ve had getting Crossover to work on Catalina. I assume if they do that, we’ll eventually get a Wine-Catalina solution for LOTRO.

Now if only I could tell my Mac «Don’t ask me about updating to Catalina until I tell you I’m ready» *sigh*

Are there any hard to find folders or anything I need to root out after I delete lotro from my Catalina volume? Or just the easy uninstall process.
