NDI Scan Converter
NDI Virtual Input.
NDI Studio Monitor
NDI Studio Monitor.
NDI Virtual Input
VLC Media Player
Studio Monitor.
NDI Tools.

Make Any System a Media Player with NDI ®
August 16, 2018 by Kane Peterson and Chuck Baker
Sometimes a production needs additional media available and perhaps playing full time and in a loop. Having a Windows system set up with VLC Media Player, Kane Peterson’s VLC SyncPlay app for VLC Media Player, and the NewTek NDI ® Tools Pack, available by free download, can fulfill this need.
Download links for these items:
The above is the recommended order for acquiring and installing these applications on the system.
VLC SyncPlay is simply an app and does not have an installer. The app allows you to select one or more clips, and assign them to be played in VLC Player to an NDI output stream. You unZip the archive, and place the app anywhere you choose for convenient use. In the video, Kane places the app on the Desktop screen.
VLC Media Player is the most popular, powerful and flexible open source free cross-platform media player. The NewTek NDI Tools Pack is a free set of tools that provide video production workflow support that engages NDI, NewTek’s royalty free bi-directional IP technology for transport of video, audio, metadata and communications over standard networks. NDI is by far the leading IP technology for media transport for video production, deployed in hundreds of products in the hands of millions of users. For both of these toolsets, simply run the installer and follow instructions to complete the installation.
Once the moving parts are all in place, operation is easy.
- Open a folder with one or more videos in it.
- Select the videos that you wish to play.
- Drag and drop the selected videos onto the VLC SyncPlay icon.
That’s it. Each of the videos will be opened and played in a continuous loop in an instance of VLC Media player. Any NDI-aware device or application on the same network will be able to see and use the NDI streams as input.
Next Kane demonstrates how to use these NDI streams in TriCaster. He clicks on the Settings gear for an Input, and on the Source pulldown, the system playing the videos is now visible. When the system is highlighted, the videos being played by VLC Media Player are available to assign to the TriCaster input. Kane assigns one to the input.
Kane steps through assigning the other two NDI streams to inputs, and then we see all three playing in the assigned inputs, and ready to use in the production. As Kane notes, even more possibilities are available for adding a system equipped with VLC Media Player to a NewTek production system workflow — VLC Media Player offers some control options that NewTek systems can use via their macro command system. Examples are provided in the VLC Media Player documentation.
An example use case is suggested by the fact that NewTek’s All-IP live production systems TriCaster TC1 and NewTek VMC1 include the capability for multiple simultaneous outputs of different content. For a tradeshow or other events where there are multiple displays and a live production also in progress, the production system could easily play out multiple video sources such as described here to full-time displays in the booth, all while switching a live presentation and simultaneously sending that to other displays in the booth or elsewhere in the venue, and streaming to the internet as well.
We hope this video has been helpful for you. If you have suggestions for other topics you would like covered in a Facebook Live or NewTek Tip Jar Tutorial, please send us a message. We will see you next time.

VLC Media Player and NewTek NDI ® VLC Plugin
August 31, 2016 by Chuck Baker
These days one can very easily end up with a lot of media content in a lot of formats. Making that content conveniently available to your productions is something that NewTek NDI can help with, particularly in conjunction with a free utility called VLC Media Player for Windows, from VideoLan.
VLC can play pretty much any format, and has a host of useful capabilities; NewTek NDI VLC Plugin, supplied with the free NewTek NDI Tools Pack, converts VLC playback to NDI in real-time on a stock PC, making the content instantly production-ready for your NDI-enabled switcher and other production tools. Previously, special video output cards would have been needed to get this content ready to go into a switcher; now it just takes an Ethernet cable.
VideoLan’s VLC Media Player is a free download: **VLC Media Player for Windows Download Page **
Download and run the installer, and follow the onscreen instructions to install the VLC Media Player on your system. [Important Note: The installer default is to install 32-bit VLC Media Player; if you have a 64-bit system, make sure instead to select to install 64-bit VLC Media Player — NDI is about 4 times faster on 64-bit than it is on 32-bit.] For this tutorial we opted to have the installer place an icon on the Desktop, per the UI image below.
The NewTek NDI Tools Pack is a free download: NewTek NDI Tools Pack Download PageВ (registration required).
The file you download is an installer, “NewTek NDI Tools.exe”. Run the installer and follow the onscreen instructions to install the NDI Tools to your chosen system. Once installation is complete, the tools present on your system include the NewTek NDI VLC Plugin.
First, locate your VLC Media Player on the desktop and run the application. If you play a video at this time, you’ll note that the video is displayed in the player window. When we use VLC Media Player with the plugin, this won’t be the case — the video and audio will go to the network as an NDI stream.
Now, lets configure VLC to send video and audio to the NewTek NDI VLC Plugin. Locate the Tools menu and select Preferences.
On the Preferences panel, select Audio.
On the Audio Settings, drop down the selection list for Output module, and select NewTek NDI audio output.
Next, select the Video Settings.
On the Video Settings, drop down the Output options list, and select NewTek NDI video output.
Once you have completed this selection, click the Save button to save the preferences.
Next, exit VLC Media Player, and restart it.
Now, if you select a video and play it, you’ll see only the playback progress bar active in the VLC window. The video is playing to the network as an NDI stream. When we installed the NewTek NDI Tools Pack, we gave ourselves a tool that will let us quickly confirm this.
On your Windows Start Menu, go to All Apps.
Locate NewTek NDI Tools on the All Apps** *list, and click the arrow to dropdown the full list of NDI Tools. Select **NDI Video Monitor*.
When the NDI Video Monitor is running, right-click on the UI to get the selection list of NDI sources that are on the network. Your VLC stream will be showing as one of these.В Select it.
Now you should see the video that VLC is playing in the NDI Video Monitor window.
