Vmware drag and drop linux

How to enable Vmware drag and drop on Manjaro VM

If you are using Manajro on VMware Workstation player and want to perform drag and drop feature to copy files and folders from host to Manjaro guest, then here are the steps to follow…

After installing Manjaro on Vmware Virtual machine, the first thing we would like have is the installation of VM tools, however, even after that sometimes we would face problem in sharing files or folder directly from host (WIndow, macOS, Linux) to Guest OS i.e Manjaro. Thus, first we have to install a tool and then need activate Vmblock service to make sure everything work smoothely.

Install Open VMware tools on Manjaro Desktop Linux

1. Open Command terminal

Just like Ubuntu, we can also use keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+T to open command terminal in Manjaro Linux . After that run system update command:

2. Install VM Tools on Manjaro Linux

Once the system update to its latest packages, run the below given command to download and install Open VM Tools on Manajro.

3. Enable Vmware Vmblock Fuse Service

Vmblock Fuse service comes along with Open-VM-tools that enables the Drag-and-Drop and Copy-and-Paste functionality on Vmware Workstation player or fusion, so that the user can transfer files from Host to Guest or vice versa.

4. Start Vmblock

To ensure it is working correctly check its status.

5. Restart system

Once all the steps above performed, restart your Manajro Linux Virtual machine to make the changes into effect. After that you will be able to transfer files with just drag and drop of mouse.

As far as I can tell there are no relevant preferences so I expect this issue is facing everyone on linux with this particular build of workstation (15.5.5) and to be honest my drag and drop hasn’t worked for a while so this could have been present in a lot of past builds. When I try to copy and paste into a vm it works fine but when I try to copy and paste out of a vm it never works. I noticed the error message I get in dolphin (kde) indicates that the file I’m trying to paste doesn’t exist and gives a path. It appears to me that vmware moved the temporary holding location for these files out of /tmp (because of tmpfs mostly likely,) so the temporary location is now in a hidden folder in my home directory. Unfortunately the host system reference to the file is being given as a relative path (without a dot,) and interpreted as an absolute path. This is probably a quick single line fix in the source code.

Hello. I have an Alienware 17 R5 laptop with Windows 10 Pro x64 installed. I recently installed VMware Workstation 15 Pro and then I installed Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon x64 as a new VM. Everything is fine and shared folders work, but, both copy and paste and drag and drop do not work, no matter the direction ( ie. to/from guest/host ).

I’m using VMware Workstation 15 Pro version 15.0.2 build 10952284 and I have the latest, I believe, VMware Tools installed with a version of 10.3.2-9925305.

In the VM’s setting under «Guest isolation» I have both «drag and drop» and «copy and paste» checked.

Copy/paste and drag&drop not working in VMware machine with Ubuntu

Suddenly copy/paste stopped working from/to Windows 8 host computer to/from ubuntu virtual machine. Ubuntu restart did not help. I tried command:

But got report I have newest version. Guest Isolation settings are enabled. What could be the scenario of fixing this problem?

I had the same problem and found that this can be fixed by executing the following commands:

  1. sudo apt-get autoremove open-vm-tools
  2. Install VMware Tools by following the usual method ( Virtual Machine —> Reinstall VMWare Tools )
  3. Reboot the VM
  4. sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop
  5. Reboot the VM, after the reboot copy/paste and drag/drop will work!

I tried the approach suggested by solution101 above, but it didn’t work for me. This is how I solved the problem:

  1. Open Terminal
  2. sudo apt install open-vm-tools-desktop
  3. restart the guest operating system

This seems to have fixed the copy-and-paste issue for me.

This is copied verbatim from a vmware community forum:

  1. Go into VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation
  2. UNCHECK bothcheckboxes (Enable drag and drop, Enable copy and paste) and click OK.
  3. Shut down the guest, and shut down VMware Workstation
  4. Reboot the host computer
  5. Run VMware Workstation but do not launch the guest yet.
  6. Go into VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation for the guest, and
  7. CHECK both checkboxes
  8. Power On the guest.

VMware Workstation 5.0

With the drag and drop features of VMware Workstation 5, you can move files easily between a Windows host and a Windows virtual machine. You can drag and drop individual files or entire directories.

You can drag and drop files or folders from a file manager, such as Windows Explorer, on the host to a file manager in the virtual machine or vice versa. You can also drag files from a file manager to an application that supports drag and drop — or from applications such as zip file managers that support drag-and-drop extraction of individual files.

When you drag a file or folder from host to virtual machine or from virtual machine to host, Workstation copies the file or folder to the location where you drop it. This means, for example, that if you drop a file on the desktop icon of a word processor, the word processor opens with a copy of the original file. The original file does not reflect any changes you make to the copy.

Initially, the application opens using a copy of the file that is stored in your temp directory (as specified in the %TEMP% environment variable). To protect any changes you make, choose File > Save As from the application’s menu and save the file in a different directory. Otherwise it may be overwritten or deleted by mistake.

To disable or enable drag and drop for a virtual machine

1. Open the virtual machine settings editor (VM > Settings), click the Options tab and select Guest isolation.

2. Select Disable drag and drop to and from this virtual machine to disable the feature. Deselect it to enable the feature.
