Question: Q: How to access VPN which are having PPTP Protocol. on Mac OS Sierra

After upgrade to Mac Os Sierra on my Mac book Pro, I am not able to connect to VPN which I used to connect earlier.

I don’t want to use or purchase other tool. Please suggest me on this.

PPTP isn’t supported any longer in macOS. Use L2TP instead. I assume the VPN server you’re connecting to is setup to accept L2TP authentication.

The VPN doesn’t accept L2TP and it says «Shared Key is missing». There is no such Shared Key for the VPN. What to do?

Ask the owner of the VPN server to accept L2TP connections. You can’t setup PPTP on your client macOS Sierra Mac anymore.

The Shared Secret in your Mac’s VPN settings needs to be the same Shared Secret that is setup on the VPN server.

The L2TP settings should be:

PPTP is a very old VPN protocol which has been shown to have significant security weaknesses such that it can easily be hacked. As such no sensible organisation would use it any more and in order to help ‘encourage’ users to use common sense Apple have now completely disabled support for it.

If you know anything about WiFi you could consider PPTP to be the equally bad equivalent to the ancient and also no longer supported WEP encryption standard.

It might just about be justifiable for a home user to use PPTP still purely for the purposes of remotely accessing their own home systems but with the clear risk of being hacked. It is certainly not justifiable for any business or education or government organisation to use it and arguably doing so could render them liable to legal prosecution for being criminally negligent with regards to computer security under various countries data protection legislation.

Any IT Manager and their CEO, CIO or equivalents should be sacked for incompetence if they still use PPTP.

Настройка PPTP VPN соединения на macOS

Данная инструкция подходит для настройки PPTP VPN на Mac OS X версии 10.11 El Capitan и старее.

PPTP VPN соединение не поддерживается с версии macOS 10.12 SIerra и новее. Рекомендуем настроить OpenVPN соединение через Tunnelblick.

Зайдите в Системные настройки.

1. Убедитесь, что замок открыт. Если замок закрыт, то нажмите на него, чтобы разрешить изменения.
2. Нажмите Добавить.

1. VPN
2. PPTP. Если PPTP отсутствует в списке, значит вы используете macOS 10.12 Sierra или новее. В этом случае рекомендуем настроить OpenVPN соединение через Tunnelblick
3. Любое имя подключения

В разделе Мой аккаунт посмотрите список IP адресов PPTP VPN, а также Логин и Пароль VPN.

1. IP адрес PPTP VPN сервера
2. Логин VPN
3. Кодирование: Максимум 128 бит
4. Нажмите Настройки аутентификации

Введите Пароль VPN.

Отметьте Отправлять весь трафик через VPN.

Подключение к PPTP VPN на macOS успешно установлено.

В дальнейшем к PPTP VPN серверу можно подключиться из верхнего меню.

Настройка подключения VPN на Mac

Чтобы подключиться к сети VPN, необходимо ввести настройки конфигурации на панели «Сеть». Эти настройки включают адрес сервера VPN, имя учетной записи и другие параметры идентификации, такие как пароль или сертификат, полученные от сетевого администратора.

Если Вы получили файл настроек VPN от администратора сети, можно импортировать его для настройки подключения. Если нет, то настройки можно ввести вручную.

Импорт файла настроек VPN

На Mac выполните одно из следующих действий.

Дважды нажмите на файл, чтобы открыть настройки сети и автоматически импортировать настройки.

Выберите пункт меню «Apple»

> «Системные настройки», нажмите «Сеть», нажмите раскрывающееся меню «Действия» , затем выберите «Импортировать конфигурации». Выберите файл, затем нажмите «Импортировать».

Введите настройки VPN автоматически

На Mac выберите меню Apple

> «Системные настройки», затем нажмите «Сеть».

Нажмите кнопку «Добавить» в списке слева, нажмите всплывающее меню «Интерфейс», затем выберите «VPN».

Нажмите всплывающее меню «Тип VPN», затем выберите тип VPN-подключения, который Вы хотите настроить, в зависимости от сети, к которой Вы подключаете компьютер. Присвойте имя службе VPN, затем нажмите «Создать».

Протокол L2TP — это расширенная версия протокола PPTP, который используется интернет-провайдерами для поддержки VPN через Интернет.

Протокол IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) является набором протоколов безопасности.

IKEv2 — это протокол, который настраивает сопоставление безопасности в IPSec.

Введите адрес сервера и имя учетной записи для VPN-подключения.

Нажмите «Настройки аутентификации», затем введите информацию, полученную от администратора сети.

Если Вы получили соответствующие указания от администратора сети, нажмите «Дополнительно» и введите дополнительную информацию, такую как параметры сеанса, настройки TCP/IP, DNS-серверы и прокси.

Introduction

PPTP VPN is no longer supported on macOS Sierra and High Sierra and that is just fine, because there are some security issues. What is not fine that in corporate environment the inertia is so big, that this can take years to stop using PPTP VPN.

So you have basically 4 options:

1. change your job
2. use some of third-party software for example shimovpn (€49)
3. use my custom made PPTP VPN for mac (☕️)
4. DIY (free)

PPTP VPN ON MACOS SIERRA AND HIGH SIERRA IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE

DIY Solution

Here is video tutorial reproducing following steps.

I’m going to cover the third one here and its quite simple. Open terminal and create file with name of your vpn server in /etc/ppp/peers/

If you get error, because the peers folder doesn’t exist, create it with mkdir /etc/ppp/peers command). Then edit this newly created file

Copy paste and fill your details

And finally run pppd deamon

If you get PPTP error when reading socket : EOF just try run the command again, or comment out the the line with ms-dns 8.8.8.8

Alternatively you can create this file anywhere and run it as

Automator

You can automate it with Automator. Just drag and drop “Run AppleScript” from left pane. And insert following line:

Now save it to Application folder and you can run it as regular app. It will ask you for administrator privileges every time because it runs pppd command. When you run it you can see little gear in you status bar indicating VPN runs and get error prompt any time VPM fails.

If you want to have nice shiny app that let you connect to VPN and that you can control from menu bar, instead of writing commands again and again in terminal, you can download this one for price of 1 coffee.

After you download, you have to right-click and open to run it.

Hi. for this diy script, I added it to automator and ran it from applications. It worked and the VPN connection was made. While it’ running, the gear remains spinning, then when I stop it, the connection remains. Is there a way to stop it manually, or add to the script to stop the connection when I stop the script? I tried killall pppd and with sudo as well. Thanks!

i have a problem with pptp, on windows works without problem, but on mac when operator router address is same as gw on vpn it wont find any remote address.

Can this be fixed in your script?
As i said on windows works without problem.

I just bough the App (v.1.1.1), it works to connect to my VPN, but I have two requests: could the icon change color or otherwise indicate that the connection is made? Also, would it be possible to have an option in the App to disconnect the VPN? Right now I have to start Terminal and kill pppd manually. I see in the App’s menu a toggle button, when I click it, it becomes “waiting…”, and once the connection is successful, the button reappears, still in an “off” state, yet I can connect to my VPN resources and the Log shows that the connection is successful.

I am running Mojave with the latest security patch (10.14.6 with Feb. 2020 patch).

And now it works (icon becomes black, toggle switch goes to green, toggling it again disconnects). I moved the app file to the Applications folder, maybe that was what was missing? Looking good for now, thanks!

For Catalina, the only thing we found to work is VPNTracker.com for $99 per year. (Comes with free 3 minute access 🙁 so you can check it works) You have to be able to enable MPEE? MPPE? encryption on your VPN Router. Maybe better to get a cheap VPN router that supports L2TP/IPSEC…. Anyhow, they use a custom module to add back the pptp functionality.

Hi, I bought the app a few days ago – Is it possible to set up split tunneling with this app? When I connect to the VPN I can access the VPN resources, but I can’t access the internet.

I’ve downloaded the software – it said it was trying to install a helper agent, asked for my password which I input. Running the app does nothing and doesn’t bring up any window? 🙁 OS Sierra 10.12.6
