In response to the question, «will my VST instruments work with linux?» the short answer is, «probably.» And generally, if one synth performs well, then other synths made by the same developer will probably work, too. With linux, the VST (Virtual Studio Technology) format is handled by a compatability-layer application called WINE, an acronym for «Wine Is Not an Emulator.» (The Wine website includes a wealth of information about the application itself, and includes the most recent release available for download and compiling, in case your system’s repositores have an older release.) With Wine installed, most of these VST instruments should perform fine in your preferred VST-plugin host. Currently available VST plug-in hosts for linux include: FeSTige (part of the KXStudio meta-packages), FSThost or VeSTige (included with the LMMS Digital Audio Workstation which is available in most repositories). Airwave is another interesting application for managing VST instruments. Airwave is a VST bridge that creates a VST instrument that can be used in linux VST hosts. And last but definitely not least, Reaper is a non-free DAW that hosts most VST instruments on the linux platform very nicely. Like Airwave, Reaper also requires installation of WINE.

Installing Wine

Once Wine is installed, go to the folder where your VST synth is located, and (if in .exe format) type in a terminal wine [yoursynth].exe to start the installer and install the .dll file. Once installed, make sure your plug-in host can find it.

My own VST synth testing

A while ago I helped build the LMMS Tested VST Database. I hope to do future testing and posting updates. (Wine and other associated files are available in many linux distros.)

The text file at the link below is the «old list» which I started a while back. Many of the synths in the list haven’t yet been added to the LMMS database but should still run fine. The instruments in the list were tested using FstHost and/or FeSTige. If neither synth ran correctly due to graphical errors, significant glitches or xruns, sluggish responsiveness or crashing, then that synth was marked as «failed.» As Wine is an ongoing project, it may be that previously failed synths are now running well under a new Wine version. (Occasionally, the reverse may also be true.)

Using VST Plugins

Virtual Studio Technology (VST) is a standard for software synthesizer and effect plugins invented by Steinberg (maker of the Cubase DAW).

To get started, here is a remarkable and very popular free synth from German vendor U-He: https://u-he.com/products/zebralette/

Download the Linux version and unzip it to your

/.vst directory. If the

/.vst directory doesn’t exist, you can create it.

One of the programs that can be used to run and manage VSTs is Carla. Here’s how to get it:

Install and Run Carla

Carla is available in Ubuntu Studio from 19.10 (The Eoan Ermine). It is also available in the Ubuntu Studio backports ppa from 18.04 (The Bionic Beaver). However, the ppa is now frozen for 18.04 and will receive no further updates.

Configuring and Using Carla

Once you build up a collection of VST plugins and have a number of projects, you should take advantage of the ability to save and restore a Carla rack combination, which can load several instruments at once. Your plugin rack will be saved with a file extension of .carxp. If you have a favorite rack configuration, or used certain plugins for a project, storing a rack is a great time saver. JACK configurations can be stored, too.

On the far right of Carla’s top menu, click «Configure Carla» to see the Settings pop-up window. Go to «Paths» and make sure «VST» is selected in the dropdown at the top center of the Settings pop-up. Add the full path to the directory you created earlier, unless it’s there by default. It might look something like this:

Also check the project path under Carla’s «Main» tab. Click «OK» to save your changes and dismiss this window. Finally, click the «+ Add plugin» button, and click «Refresh» on the subsequent pop-up window. Carla will search for Zebralette and any other VST plugins you’ve installed under the VST path. These may take a while to load, during which time it will look like Carla isn’t doing anything. If you get an error message, loading may have simply timed out — try it again a few times. When the plugin becomes available, it will also show up in JACK, where you can connect it to System and your MIDI controller. Check that everything works. Back in Carla, you can see the GUI for this and other VSTs by clicking the gear icon (white gear at top left the following screenshot).

Zebralette and other free VSTs may have been released a few years ago, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make fresh-sounding music with them. Always check out commercial offerings and/or consider a donation to the developer if you end up making heavy use of a particular plugin. Most have a PayPal tip jar. Carla’s wrench icon is important because it allows you to bind synth parameters like filters or the VCA rate to knobs on your controller, such as the modulation wheel. Just find the Continuous Controller number for a given knob, and set that as the CC# for a given parameter in the wrench’s pop-up window. Your controller’s manual will show the CC assignments. In the following example, the modulation wheel is CC# 1, and is being used to control the Hi-cut Frequency (circled in red).

Zebralette’s rich and varied sounds come from the ability to stack and draw custom waveforms. The Presets tab on this «morphing» synth is the third tab from the left on the bottom tier.

Any parameter can be bound to a given CC number. Multiple parameters cannot be assigned to the same CC number. Settings can be stored and recalled.

It’s not difficult to find free VSTs, but here are two sites that have hundreds, if not thousands of free plugins: http://vst4free.com which sorts by name, rating, and last added (in addition to giving a random list when you first roll up on the site) and http://vstplanet.com. Note that not all freeware uses legally-obtained samples. Additional reviews of some VST plugins appear in the appendix.

Do know that many VSTs are built for Windows, which requires the WINE Windows emulator and a plugin bridge. A part for that process may be added to this section at a later date. Be sure to use the latest version of WINE.

Using Windows VST Plugins on Linux

Thanks to the combined work of Torben Hohn, Kjetil Mattheusen, Paul Davis and a few other developers, it is possible to use Windows (that is, plugins in VST format built and distributed for the Windows platforms) on Ardour running on Linux.

However, doing so has three substantial downsides:

• It requires a special build of Ardour that is fundamentally very different from normal builds
• Support depends on Wine, a Windows «emulator»
• As usual with plugins, a crashing plugin will take Ardour down with it—and crashes in Windows VST plugins are more likely when used in this way

The dependence on Wine makes it almost impossible for the Ardour project to support this feature. Wine’s functionality generally improves over time, but any given release of Wine may behave worse with some or all Windows VST plugins. It may even just crash Ardour completely.

Step back and think about what «using Windows VSTs» really means: taking bits of software written with only one idea in mind—running on the Windows platform—and then trying to use them on an entirely different platform. It is a bit of a miracle (thanks largely to the incredible work done by the Wine project) that it works at all. But is this the basis of a stable, reliable DAW for a non-Windows platform? Getting Ardour on Linux to pretend that its really a Windows application running on Windows?

It is understandable that there are many outstanding plugins available as Windows VSTs and, that in many cases, no equivalent is available for Linux. If a workflow is so dependent on those plugins, Ardour should be used on Windows (or potentially used with an actual Windows VST host running inside of Wine). If the effort can be made, a better environment can be obtained by using a normal build of Ardour and exploring the world of plugins built to run on Linux natively. This covers LADSPA, LV2 and Linux VST formats, and even some outstanding proprietary plugins such as those from Loomer.

A Plea To Plugin Manufacturers

Please consider porting your plugins so that users can enjoy them on Linux too. Several other commercial plugin developers have already done this. You can choose between using «Linux VST» (which is what Loomer and others have done)—you will find toolkits like JUCE that help to make this fairly easy—or using LV2 format which is ultimately more flexible but probably requires more work. We have users—thousands of users—on Linux who would like to use your plugins.

С помощью NanoHost пользователи могут превратить любые плагины в независимые самостоятельные инструменты. При этом использовать в качестве standalone-инструментов можно даже те плагины, в которых изначально не предусмотрен подобный функционал. Tone2 обещают, что показатели задержки при работе с плагином будут минимально возможными, а загрузка плагинов очень быстрой. При этом сигнал на выходе плагина можно записать: NanoHost умеет записывать сигнал в формат. WAV, благодаря чему пользователи могут использовать свои импровизации в любых проектах.

Tone2 NanoHost распространяется совершенно бесплатно, при этом для скачивания VST-хоста не нужны регистрация на сайте, подписка на рассылку, лайки в социальных сетях и любые другие действия. Более того, NanoHost даже не надо устанавливать: программа распространяется в виде исполняемого файла и может работать с флешки, CD-диска или любого другого внешнего накопителя. В качестве вишенки на торте стоит отметить поддержку 32-битных плагинов — можно достать любые старые инструменты из своего архива и снова свободно ими пользоваться.

Единственное, что нужно сделать после скачивания и запуска NanoHost — указать программе на каталог, где хранятся плагины и дождаться окончания сканирования. Бесплатный VST-хост распространяется в виде файла запуска для Windows и Linux (Wine). Получить больше подробностей о VST-хосте и скачать NanoHost можно на официальном сайте Tone2.

Напомним, что ранее компания IK Multimedia запустила раздачу мощного басового синтезатора Syntronik Bully, эмулирующего звучание Moog Taurus. Ранее сайт Pianobook опубликовал большую коллекцию виртуальных библиотек пианино и роялей, созданных пользователями сайта. Каждый инструмент работает через сэмплер Native Instruments Kontakt, поэтому воспользоваться ими как отдельным самостоятельным инструментом через VST-хост не составит труда.
