Wakie Windows Phone app lets users ‘wake up’ with a new person every day

The Wakie app, which just launched for Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 today, give users a way to wake up each day with a new person. Before your minds go in a certain direction, the app has been designed so that it gives users a call on their phone with a real person each morning, with a different person on the call every day,

The app previously launched on Android and its creators claim that it has 1.5 million users worldwide who have already made 30 million calls. Here’s how the Wakie app works directly from the dev team:

Set an alarm for 7:00am and you’ll get a phone call from another Wakie member at 7:00am. The calls last just 60 seconds—you’ll hear a warning at 50 seconds, and the call is automatically disconnected at 1 minute. No awkward goodbyes, no long conversations—calls are quick and casual. You can also choose to wake someone up yourself, too!

It’s actually kind of a brilliant new way to meet people and is one of those ideas that you have to wonder why no one has though about this kind of app until now. Best of all, the app and its service are free.

How to Turn on Your PC with Your Android Phone Using Wake-On-LAN

Learn how to turn on your computer with your Android phone before you even get to your desk!

What’s the first thing you do when you get to your desk? Probably turn on your computer. Whether you tap your keyboard, move your mouse, or press the power button, you have to be at your computer before you can start it. Wouldn’t it be nice if your computer was ready to go?

Let us show you how to use your Android device to remotely power on your PC. Tomorrow, you can get to your desk with Windows already booted.

Before You Start

For this setup to work, your computer must support Wake-on-LAN (WoL). WoL is a feature of the motherboard. The easiest way to find out whether your computer supports WoL is to boot into the BIOS and check the power management settings. Press the correct key at boot (try ESC, DEL, F2, or F8), and your computer should enter the BIOS.

Once you’re inside the BIOS, look for the Wake On LAN setting and enable it. You’re likely to find this along with other settings related to power management or networking. BIOS options vary from computer to computer, so you might have to do some digging of your own.

If you cannot find an option for Wake on LAN, the following setup likely won’t work. However, you can still set Windows up to launch selected programs at boot.

The Quick & Easy Setup

If your PC does support WoL, your first step is to install Wake On Lan, a free Android app.

Next, we need to connect your Android device to your Windows computer using the app.

When you first open the app, it will look pretty bleak. Tap the + icon in the bottom right and follow the on-screen instructions to add your first device.

Once you follow the app’s instructions, it will search for devices connected to your local network. If many computers, phones, and tablets use your internet connection, the list can be confusing. The easiest way to identify your target computer is through its MAC address.

To find your computer’s MAC address, head over to your computer, press Windows key + R, enter CMD, and hit Enter. Then type ipconfig/all into the command prompt and press Enter. This command will reveal your computer’s Physical Address, a string of six two-digit numbers, also known as the MAC address.

Now return to the app and select the entry with the matching MAC address. Choose a nickname for the device and choose the appropriate Wi-Fi network.

Once you’ve added your computer to the app, it’s time to see if it works! Place your computer in Sleep or Hibernate mode (Start > Power > Sleep / Hibernate), and press the Wake button on the Wake On Lan app.

If it works, great! If not, you have two more settings to check.

The Nitty Gritty Setup

So, you’ve enabled WoL in the BIOS and set up the app as described above, and it still didn’t wake your computer? Try the following settings.

Enable WoL for Your Network Adapter

You probably haven’t set up your network adapter to accept a Wake-On-LAN packet.

In Windows 10, right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. You can also do a Windows Search for Device Manager. Navigate to Network Adapters, right-click the one you use to connect with the internet, and select Properties.

On the Power Management tab, you’ll find three checkboxes, including Allow this device to wake the computer and Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer. If they’re not already checked, do so. This should clear up any trouble that’s causing the Android app to malfunction.

Disable Fast Startup

WoL only works when you’re trying to wake the computer from Sleep or Hibernation. WoL doesn’t work with the default hybrid shutdown in Windows 8 and Windows 10. The simple solution is to turn off fast startup.

Open the Control Panel, search for Power Options, and select Change what the power buttons do. At the top, click Change settings that are currently unavailable, then scroll down and uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended). Finally, click Save changes .

Now put your computer to Sleep (Start > Power > Sleep) and try this again. Is it finally working?

Wake Windows

Once you have set up the Wake On Lan app, you can start your computer with the tap of a button.

Unfortunately, this app won’t let you wake your computer automatically; for example, waking your computer based on a schedule or as your phone makes a connection with your Wi-Fi network. For the latter, try PCAutoWaker [No Longer Available], though note that the app hasn’t been updated since 2011.

Как устанавливать приложения и игры из XAP?

Для установки приложения из XAP, на Вашем смартфоне должен быть сделан джейлбрейк. Подробности можно узнать здесь.

Способ №1:

1. Установите Windows Phone Developer Tools
2. Откройте Application Deployment tool (Пуск-> Windows Phone Developer Tools -> Application Deployment) и следуете инструкциям.

Способ №2:
1 этап:

1. Установите Windows Phone Developer Tools
2. Скачайте и распакуйте архив с последней версией Tom XAP Installer
3. Запустите Tom XAP Installer.exe
4. Поставьте галочку около «Enable Tom XAP Installer» и закройте окно
   

Примечание: действия описанные в 1 этапе нужно выполнить только один раз. Желательно не удалять и не перемещать Tom XAP Installer.exe

2 этап:

1. Подключите устройство к ПК
2. Запустите Zune
3. Проверьте, что устройство не заблокировано (т.е. открыт начальный экран)
4. Скачайте приложение в .xap
5. Откройте его
6. Нажмите Install и дождитесь окончания установки
   

Способ №3:

1. Скачайте и распакуйте архив с последней версией Homebrew Windows Phone 7 Market
2. Откройте XAPDeployX.exe
3. Выберите куда вам необходимо установить XAP (Windows Phone 7 Device — Устройство, Windows Phone 7 Emulator — Эмулятор)
   
4. Нажмите Browse и выберите XAP, который вам необходимо установить и нажмите Открыть. Также вы можете просто перетащить XAP на программу, не нажимая кнопку Browse.
   

   

5. Нажмите кнопку Deploy
   

Преимуществом третьего способа можно считать отсутствие необходимости устанавливать Windows Phone 7 Developers Tools. Также, есть альтернативный вариант выполнения третьего шага — в Homebrew Windows Phone 7 Market нажмите Options и выберите «Register filehandler». После данной операции вы можете просто открывать XAP файлы в проводнике, Homebrew Windows Phone 7 Market будет запускаться автоматически.

Загляните в Marketplace – виртуальный магазин Microsoft, предлагающий приложения, игры и другие развлечения для Вашего телефона. Многие приложения и игры в Marketplace бесплатны, остальные можно опробовать до покупки.

Прежде, чем Вы опробуете или купите приложение или игру
— Используя Ваш Windows Live ID, войдите в службу Windows Live для получения доступа к сервисам Windows Live, Zune и Xbox LIVE.
— Установите программное обеспечение Zune для синхронизации приложений и игр между Вашим ПК и телефоном.

Загружайте приложения в Ваш телефон

1. Чтобы начать, нажмите на значок Marketplace
2. Нажимайте значки приложений.
3. Двигайте экран влево или вправо, чтобы увидеть наиболее популярные, новые или связанные приложения, а также для доступа к категориям. Когда Вы найдете нужное приложение или игру, нажмите на нее.

   Вы найдете Ваши новые приложения в Списке программ (App list) (сдвиньте экран влево от Начального экрана (Start)). Вы найдете Ваши новые игры в хабе Игры (Games) (на Начальном экране (Start) нажмите Игры (Games) и сдвиньте экран влево к коллекции).

   Ищете определенное приложение или игру? Войдите в Marketplace и нажмите Поиск (Search).
   

Загрузите приложения на Ваш ПК

1. Подключите Ваш телефон к ПК используя usb-кабель.
2. На Начальном экране (Start), нажмите Все программы (All programs), затем нажмите Zune.
3. Если Вы не вошли, нажмите Войти (Sign In), затем войдите, используя тот же идентификатор Windows Live ID, который Вы используете на Вашем телефоне.

• Если Вы приобрели Ваше приложение в Zune в то время, как Ваш телефон не был соединен с ПК, приложение будет загружено по беспроводному соединению в течение 24 часов. Если Вы впоследствии подключите Ваш телефон к Вашему ПК, загрузка будет продолжена по беспроводному соединению.
• Marketplace может быть недоступен в Вашей стране или регионе.
