Apple’s support website (support.apple.com) provides instructions for restarting AMDS if iTunes cannot recognize a device. Apple recommends against disabling AMDS or any of the other background processes even when iTunes is not open. However, AMDS can continue running even when the Apple mobile device is not connected to the computer and its high CPU usage, as much as 50 percent, slows PC performance and can cause overheating in laptops. The Apple Mobile Device Service can be set not to start automatically through the Control Panel «Admin Tools/Services» option and only Started when the user needs to sync the device from iTunes and Stopped when finished. The CPU consumption problem may have begun with a compatibility problem between AMDS and iTunes 10.4. There are comments on Apple support forums which recommend reverting to version 10.3.2, including a workaround to get the older iTunes to recognize libraries created in the newer one. However, iTunes has reached release level 11.4 as of September 2014, and that approach may have become invalid. Apple has released a troubleshooting document for issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
