While the door may be the first place an intruder tries to enter your property, the next in place they’ll test is the windows.

Unfortunately, windows by their very nature aren’t as secure as a hard timber door.

But because windows offer snapshot into your home-life and they put all your valuables and precious things on display, they represent a tantalising opportunity to your average burglar. After all, everything inside seems just out of reach.

That’s not to say that there aren’t measures you can and should take to improve security around the perimeter of your home.

Why are windows the home’s Achilles’ heel?

Believe it or not, just over half of all forced entries are through a window.

Windows make a very an inviting prospect for intruders because they tend to be hidden behind greenery and fences, and of course, they’re usually weaker than doors.

In older homes especially, would-be thieves are very much aware that many homeowners neglect to install locks on the windows or keep them consistently closed and locked when they leave the house.

Single- and double-hung windows

Then while the window is locked, the hardened steel-locking bolt stops either sash from being opened. You can also get keyed sash locks that take the place of normal lever fasteners.

Sliding windows

Because of their narrow leading edge, you should use a key-lockable bolt that’s been specially designed to mount on the sash.

A small hole drilled in the frame lets the bolt pass through, blocking any movement and stopping the entire sash from being lifted out of the frame by a thief. Most brands use either a push bolt with a lock and key or a key to activate the bolt.

Glass louvre windows

Glass louvre windows of yesteryear can pose a security problem as few have locks and they’re easy to break. If you have old louvres on the ground level it could be wise to invest in a security grill or bars to prevent break-ins.

Old fashioned louvres are less secure and should be upgraded.

Modern louvres are far more secure. Most come with key locks and the new design means that when closed, the glass overlaps, removing the opportunity for someone to lever the louvres open, as is the case with old louvre windows.

Awning and casement windows

Both of these window styles can use keyed sash bolts. They body is fitted into the sash and uses the bolt to lock into the frame. For awning windows there are also chain winder locks available.

Lockable winders

Lockable winders are designed to completely replace the basic locking unit you find on most windows. The winder locks the window in any position – completely frustrating a thief who thinks they can use a slightly open window to their advantage.

To save you having to replace your entire winder unit, you can auxiliary lock instead that fits alongside the standard winder.

A few final tips on window security

• Love your giant TV?
  So do thieves – don’t leave valuables on display. Close the blinds.
• Live above ground level?
  You should still lock upstairs windows and doors.
• Have window panes in your doors, or side light windows?
  Make sure your lock is not so close to the window that someone can break the pane, reach around and unlock the door.

How are louvres used?

Louvre installation and sizes

Louvres don’t require any particularly complex installation, although they do come in different sizes and configurations, normally designed to conform to standard window sizes. Some of the variables you’ll need to consider include:

• what materials your louvres will be made of
• what colour your louvres will be
• what sorts of mechanisms will be used to open and close them
• how wide the louvre blades will be
• how high the louvre blades will be
• how many louvre blades you’ll have per bay (i.e. how many in each rows of louvres)
• how tall your louvre bays will be
• how many bays of louvres you’ll have in each configuration (e.g. two bays = two rows, four bays = four rows)
• whether your louvres will need weather stripping to kee the elements out

Where a particular configuration of blades doesn’t fit perfectly into the allotted space, a fixed, non-standard sized blade is often installed at the top of the bay to fill the difference. Louvres should be constructed and installed to adhere to the Australian Standard AS 2047-1999, Windows in buildings – Selection and installation.

It’s worth noting that louvres are pretty easily compromised from the outside if they’re left open. A firm push will normally dislodge the blades and allow people to break in, so depending on where they’re being installed, adding some bars or security screens may be a good idea.

Maintenance tips

Another advantage of louvre windows is that they’re far easier to keep clean than many other types of windows. Both sides of the louvre blades can be cleaned from inside, which makes them a practical choice for elevated or multi-storey houses.
