Microsoft Loves Linux

In a press and analyst briefing a few months back, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella put up a slide proclaiming “Microsoft ♥ Linux”. Wow! What a great slide and what a change for Microsoft! The trade press picked up on this slide in a major way, with a number of articles echoing this new approach to Linux and open source within Microsoft. And they’re right!

But you may ask “Why is Microsoft working with Linux and open source?”, or “What’s Microsoft’s plan going forward?”, or “What does ‘Microsoft ♥ Linux’ mean for me as a customer?”

At the core, “Microsoft ♥ Linux” is driven by what we’ve heard from you as customers. You run workloads on Windows. You run workloads on Linux. You run these workloads in your on-premises datacenters, hosted at service providers, and in public clouds. You just want it all to work, and to work together regardless of the operating system. We hear you, and understand that your world is heterogeneous. Bottom line, this is a business opportunity for Microsoft to offer heterogeneous support — both Windows and Linux workloads – on-premises and in a public cloud. Microsoft can add real value in a heterogeneous cloud.

It may come as a surprise, but Microsoft has been working with Linux for a number of years. System Center Operations Manager has offered Linux and UNIX monitoring since 2009. Drivers for running Linux guests on Hyper-V became widely available for a number of distros in 2010, and we even have drivers for running FreeBSD guests on Hyper-V. Microsoft Azure offered Linux VMs on “day 1” of the Azure IaaS general availability in 2013.

We’ve built a significant customer base that is using Linux with Microsoft products. Several hundred thousand Linux and UNIX servers in production usage today are managed by System Center, with the largest customers managing nearly 10,000 Linux servers. Customers such as Ancestry.com, Equifax, the United Kingdom government FCO Services, and Europcar operate Microsoft clouds on-premises running Hyper-V and System Center with many VMs running Linux. More than 20% of the VMs in Azure IaaS are running Linux. Azure is offering the HDInsight (Hadoop) service running on Linux in addition to running on Windows. And if you look more broadly, Microsoft offers key productivity software such as Office365, Skype, and RDP clients on Linux-based and BSD-based client operating systems such as iOS, Android, and Mac OS X.

What does this all add up to? Working with Linux isn’t new at Microsoft. In fact, Linux is already a sizable commitment for Microsoft that is now getting a higher public profile. We see executing on that commitment as a critical part of what we offer customers.

Linux in your datacenter

Microsoft is making huge investments in the foundational cloud technologies that are described in other entries in this blog series: Compute, Networking, and Storage. These investments are informed by our experience with the hyper-scale Azure public cloud. They are also independent of the guest operating system, so they work for both Windows and Linux. Great features like storage quality-of-service, network virtualization, and super-fast live migration using RDMA work for Linux just like they work for Windows. In the product development teams, when we envision and design new capabilities for the cloud foundation, we ask “How does this work for Windows?” and we ask “How does this work for Linux?” As a result, the Microsoft offering for on-premises datacenters is fundamentally heterogeneous, able to run Windows and Linux guests in a unified fashion.

Of course, some capabilities require the cooperation of the guest OS. For these capabilities, Microsoft developers write the Linux device driver code for Hyper-V and participate in the Linux community to get the code into the upstream Linux kernel at kernel.org. Then we engage with distro vendors like Red Hat, Canonical, Oracle, and SUSE to enable full support on Hyper-V for these distros that you are probably running. As a result, Linux runs great on Hyper-V!

We also invest in the management layer. We are announcing that the first version of Powershell Desired State Configuration (DSC) for Linux is now available. With DSC for Linux, you can do consistent configuration management across Windows and Linux. On Linux you can install packages, configure files, create users & groups, and set up services. DSC for Linux is also an open source project, available on GitHub.

Our enterprise management functionality in System Center Operations Manager, Configuration Manager, Virtual Machine Manager, and Data Protection Manager manages Linux right alongside Windows so that you can have a single systems management infrastructure for your heterogeneous datacenter. We’ve taken System Center management beyond just the Linux operating system, and into open source middleware such as Tomcat, JBoss, Apache Web Server, and MySQL. Also, we have extended our hybrid services to include Linux — for example, Azure Site Recovery between on-premises datacenters (or service providers) and Azure.

Linux in Microsoft Azure

As we’re doing for the on-premises datacenter, Microsoft is making huge investments in the Azure public cloud. Again, our goal is that everything in Azure works for Linux VMs just like it works for Windows VMs. Capabilities like the huge “G” series VM sizes, Premium Storage, and Azure Backup for VMs are available for both Windows and Linux, as is a range of extensions for custom scripting, regaining access, and OS patching. Some capabilities, such as integration with Docker, Chef, and other open source projects, are available to you on Linux before they are available on Windows.

Azure offers a range of enterprise-ready Linux distros in Azure: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, openSUSE, Ubuntu Linux, Oracle Linux, and Core OS, as well as community distro such as CentOS. Or you can upload your own custom Linux image.

If you are consuming Azure services, you want flexibility to access those services from a Windows computer, or from a Linux or Mac OS X computer. For starters, you’ve probably used the Azure portal, which is an HTML5 web application that works in browsers running on Windows as well as browsers on Linux and Mac OS X. But as your usage progresses, you may want to integrate Azure into your operational processes. On Windows, Powershell is the primary scripting and automation interface. For Linux and Mac OS X (and Windows), Azure offers a node.js-based package of commands for scripting and automating the full lifecycle of Azure services.

In Azure datacenters, Microsoft personnel are now operating PaaS services based on Linux as well as services based on Windows. The HDInsight (Hadoop) service is the first to be available on Linux, and it makes good business sense for other services using “born on Linux” open source projects to just run on Linux rather than being ported to Windows. Internal tools for monitoring, diagnosing, patching, and meeting compliance requirements have been extended to include these Linux-based services.

Why I love linux.

Why i This is my story of how I fell in love with the Linux operating system and why I keep using it.

At school, a student interested in learning new stuff for his small business asked me: «What is Linux? And why do you use it?». I did not expect anybody at school to ask me this question since my classmates usually are quite in love with Windows. I did not know what to say or what to respond with. I gave him a dumb history lesson about open source and free software. After this long speech, he quickly lost interest in what Linux was and quickly changed the subject after I was done.

Not only did I lose his interest but I felt a bit hung up on the fact that I can’t even explain why I love Linux. This blog post will explain my love for Linux.

How i started

A few months after I started using Linux on that server I experienced some difficulties with my laptop. It would lock up when booting into Windows 7. At the beginning, I did not experience this problem often but as time went on it would happen more and more and more. It drove me to the point that I tried installing the newer Windows 8 on my old laptop but as you might expect Windows 8 was not compatible with my laptop.

At this point I was desperate, I could not use Windows 7 without having boot problems and I could not use Windows 8 cause of driver problems.
In this desperate time a normal user might write off his laptop and go and buy a newer model but somehow I did not do so. But I installed a fancy new Linux distribution called ‘Elementary os’ alongside a Windows 7 partition.

Why did I keep using it?

To my surprise most of the applications I used on Windows for my day to day programming where available. Not only that I loved that most installs where one apt-get command away. For the programs that were only for Window’s, there were good replacements that worked fine enough for me.

The operating system felt so snappy and responsive on the same machine where Windows 7 dared not to go faster than a snail.

The reason i stayed using linux

Not only that but when you learn Linux you gain the most valuable computer knowledge that most other operating systems hide away. How your computer works. This is the main reason I love Linux.

Linux does not hide stuff. If something goes wrong you will get a clear and understandable error, It does exactly what you tell it to do and nothing else and it’s customizable beyond belief.

But even if you don’t want to know how your computer actually operates it’s a great operating system. I bet you can do most stuff you do on your Windows computer day to day on a modern Linux distribution.

Why do I use it?: It has all the programs I need on a day to day basis it’s customizable and I love tinkering with it. I’m currently running the Arch Linux distribution wich lets me customize my operating system to a point I feel very comfortable using it very quickly.

Get LÖVE

Download the latest version of LÖVE from the website, and install it. If you’re on Windows and don’t want to install LÖVE, you can also just download the zipped executables and extract them anywhere.

To find out which version of LÖVE is installed, run the following command:

Making a Game

To make a minimal game, create a folder anywhere, and open up your favorite text editor. Sublime Text is a pretty good one for all operating systems, and it has Lua support built in. Create a new file in the folder you just created, and name it main.lua . Put the following code in the file, and save it.

Running Games

LÖVE can load a game in two ways:

  • From a folder that contains a main.lua file.
  • From a .love file that has a main.lua file in the top-most directory level (aka root)

Windows

ZeroBrane Studio, Sublime Text, Notepad++, and SciTE allow you to launch the game from within their code editors.

Otherwise, the easiest way to run the game is to drag the folder onto either love.exe or a shortcut to love.exe. Remember to drag the folder containing main.lua , and not main.lua itself.

You can also launch the game from the command line:

You can create a shortcut to do this; simply make a shortcut to love.exe, right-click on it and select «Properties», and then put the command line you want in the «Target» box for the shortcut.

On Windows, there is a special command-line option which will attach a console to the window, allowing you to see the result of print calls (equivalent to setting t.console=true in conf.lua or running lovec.exe (since 0.10.2)):

Mac OS X

On Mac OS X, a folder or .love file can be dropped onto the love application bundle. On the Mac Terminal (command line), you can use love like this (assuming it’s installed to the Applications directory):

Android

As long as you have LÖVE for Android installed from the Play Store or another source and assume you didn’t download/use the «embed» suffix flavor, the following methods will work:

  • Transfer your game folder to /sdcard/lovegame where main.lua is found at /sdcard/lovegame/main.lua . Then run LÖVE for Android. In Android Marshmallow or later, you have to grant LÖVE for Android storage permission (will be prompted).
  • Transfer/download a .love of your game to the device and click on it. Most file explorers will run the .love using LÖVE for Android. If it does not you can install ES File Explorer which will. If you use Dropbox, you can use that to open .love files. May not work in Android Nougat or later due to some changes.

In order to run LÖVE for iOS, it must first be compiled and installed. To do that, you’ll need Mac OS X, Xcode 7 or newer, and the LÖVE for iOS source code downloadable from the home page.

  • If the include and libraries folders are not present in the love/platform/xcode/ios folder, download them and place them there. They contain the third-party library dependencies used by LÖVE.
  • Open the Xcode project found at love/platform/xcode/love.xcodeproj and select the love-ios target in the dropdown menu at the top of the window.
  • You may want to change the Build Configuration from Debug to Release for better performance, by opening the «Edit Scheme. » menu from the same dropdown selection.
  • Choose either an iOS Simulator device or your plugged-in iOS device in the dropdown selection to the right of the previous one, and click the Build-and-Run ▶︎ button to the left, which will install LÖVE on the target device after compiling it.

LÖVE on iOS includes a simple list interface of games that are installed (until you fuse a .love to it for distribution.)

  • To put a .love file on the iOS Simulator after LÖVE is installed, drag the file onto the iOS Simulator’s window while it’s open. LÖVE will launch if it’s not running already. If another game is currently active you may need to quit LÖVE for the new game to show up (press Shift-Command-H twice to open the App Switcher menu on the iOS Simulator.)
  • To put a .love file or game folder on your iOS device after LÖVE is installed, you can either download it with the Safari, or transfer it from your computer through iTunes when your device is connected: open iTunes, go to the iOS device which has LÖVE installed, go to the ‘Apps’ section and scroll down and find LÖVE, and add the .love file or game folder to LÖVE’s Documents section. On more recent iOS and Mac versions, you can use Airdrop to transfer your .love file from your Mac to where LÖVE is installed.
