Linux for developers
Develop applications on the most popular Linux for the enterprise—all while using the latest technologies.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the world’s leading enterprise Linux platform, now optimized for development.
What is Linux?
Linux® is an open source operating system (OS) and IT infrastructure platform created as a hobby by Linus Torvalds in 1991. In the world of operating systems, Linux has the largest user base, is the most-used OS on publicly available internet servers, and the only OS used on the top 500 fastest supercomputers. Because the source code for Linux is freely available, there are several different distributions, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (Red Hat’s flagship product) and Fedora Linux, a community project founded by Red Hat to develop a desktop version of Linux.
Software developers create apps and services inside Linux containers that let them code once, then run their code virtually anywhere. All containerized apps contain some part of a Linux distribution. You want to make sure that all of the pieces in your container, including the Linux base, are identical between environments so you don’t have to spend your time patching and backporting.
Use enterprise-grade containers to develop in a hybrid world
Part of the beauty of Linux containers is that they are hybrid by design. That means you can code locally, test in the cloud, and deploy anywhere that Linux containers will run. Most Red Hat developer components are available with dockerfiles, or distributed as Linux container images on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (for local dev) and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (local, on-line, or public cloud dev). This means that wherever you develop, test, and deploy, you’re using the same development stacks, on-premise to virtual to cloud. To help you get where you’re going faster, the Red Hat container catalog gives you access to certified, trusted, and secure application containers.

Red Hat training & certification
Find answers to your questions about Red Hat® training and certification offerings, how to maximize your investment in training and certification, and the best way to create a skills path that matches your needs.
Find out how the learning team is here to help during the COVID-19 crisis
How has COVID-19 impacted in-person training and certification offerings?
Red Hat wants to ensure the safety of all students and training personnel. In response to the new coronavirus (COVID-19), we are mandating the use of masks within all in-person training and testing locations. This policy applies to all students, instructors, and examinees, regardless of local municipal guidance or requirements pertaining to the wearing of masks. Failure to comply with this policy will result in individuals being denied entry into testing and training facilities.
You can still build skills without traveling through our remote exam, on-demand video classroom, and online learning formats, which offer the same content and labs as our classroom-based courses. Our preliminary exams, which are designed to gauge skills and demonstrate progress toward proficiency for certification, can also be taken virtually.
What if I’ve already purchased a course or exam?
Due to social distancing mandates, we are giving our students, customers, and partners full flexibility to cancel and reschedule any previously scheduled classes or exams.
For people whose individual exam eligibilities were expiring from June 1, 2021 through September 30, 2021, we have extended 90 days. People who have been previously extended but have not yet consumed are receiving an additional 90 days.
All certifications have been extended until October 1, 2021.
Please contact our certification team if you have other questions about exams and certifications.
Are there any special rates or discounts available during this time of limited training and certification locations?
Yes, we have created a number of opportunities to help students and employers maximize their learning investments during this time:
- We have free training courses designed to give you a preview of our robust learning options. Browse all of our free courses to find training that will suit your needs.
- If you’re a Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA®), you can level up your Kubernetes skills with a 50% discount on the new Red Hat Kubernetes certification exam or the Red Hat OpenShift I: Containers & Kubernetes (DO180) course.
We also have discounts that vary by geography, so please check with your local teams to determine which promotions may be available to you.
Pursue certification wherever you are
With our new remote exam offerings, you now have options to validate your skills virtually while still being able to test at your location, at a testing station, or in a Red Hat classroom.

What are the terms of unique exams and unique retakes?
Certification exams are not included in the basic tier of Red Hat Learning Subscription. Exams are included only in the standard tier and developer tier. A standard subscription provides five first attempts for five different exams and retakes for two of these. For example, you could take the EX200 Red Hat Certified System Administrator exam twice and the EX300 Red Hat Certified Engineer exam twice, and you still would have three first attempts at three different exams left. Let’s say you needed two attempts to pass the EX200 RHCSA® exam but passed the EX300 RHCE® exam in one attempt. You would have three first attempts at three different exams left, plus you could retake one of those if needed. Renewing your subscription does not extend your first year’s exams, but instead it gives you a new set of five exams and two retakes.
