Booting Slacko 6.3 on UEFI
Posted by jamesb

Booting UEFI difficult? Nah. Not at all. Let’s do this for Slacko 6.3 (32-bit).
- Make sure you have UEFI machine. Machines that comes with Win8 or recent usually okay.
- Get a blank flash drive. Format it as FAT32.
- Grab a copy of Slacko 6.3 ISO
- Grab a copy of Grub2 UEFI bootloader, from here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/packages/700/grub2-efi64-2.00-x86_64-1.txz . This is for 64-bit machine, if yours is 32-bit (extremely rare) then get http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/packages/700/grub2-efi32-2.00-i686-1.txz
- Extract the tarball from previous step, make sure you get a copy of grubx64.efi (or grubia32.efi) from inside the tarball and rename it to bootx64.efi (or bootia32.efi).
- On your flash drive:
— mkdir -p EFI/boot
— copy bootx64.efi (or bootia32.efi) and put it under EFI/boot
— Extract the contents of Slacko 6.3 ISO and put the following files to the root of the flash drive:
— on the root of the flash drive, create a new file named «grub.cfg» and fill it with the following text:
You can run Slacko64 6.3 in the same way. Your success with other Puppies may vary, but the process is generally the same.
PS: In my (qemu) test, mouse doesn’t work. But this is something I’m sure Mick can fix later 🙂

About Slacko
Slacko Puppy Linux is an operating system for your computer.
An operating system is the base software in your computer which is responsible for booting your computer and managing all the resources including, but not limited to, the hardware and peripherals, memory and programs. Microsoft™ Windows, Apple™ Mac OSX and Ubuntu™ Linux™ are examples of operating systems.
Slacko Puppy is built from the Woof-CE build system originally developed by Barry Kauler, the creator of Puppy Linux, now maintained by a community team. It is compatible with the binary packages of Slackware 14.1. This is the last release in the current series. It features the recent 3 (LTS) and 4 series kernels and comes in i686 (32 bit) «slacko» and x86_64 (64 bit) «slacko64» versions.
Slacko boots straight to a usable desktop and incorporates an improved firstrun wizard which allows you to set your locale for language, timezone, keyboard and display then goes straight into a connection wizard to get you online via your choice of connection type. Slacko supports many wired and wireless network connections, dialup with externel modems, cell phones and 3G modems.
The latest Firefox-38 ESR browser is included for a full featured browsing experience. Adobe Flash Player is downloadable with the GetFlash tool, available from Menu > Internet. If you don’t like Firefox there is a choice of other browsers from the Puppy Package Manager. Once you have saved a Puppy session, you have the choice to download the «devx», which is the Puppy compiling environment comprising of gcc, the GNU C compiler, and all development libraries for included programs. The full kernel source is also available from the SFS downloading tool in case you need to compile a particular kernel module.
Once you have finished a Puppy session you can save it or not. Saving can be done to a variety of media, the choice is yours. It is all taken care of at power down. You can install Puppy so you can boot off your hard drive, CD/DVD drive, USB drive or you can even boot over the LAN network with some extra packages.
There is a huge variety of PET (Puppy Extra Treats) packages in the Puppy Package Manager to cover almost any need, There are also several SFS packages for very large programs whch are easy to install with a special tool which takes care of installing them.
Puppy uses JWM as it’s window manager, an extremely lightweight tool and combined with ROX Filer makes for a snappy and extensible desktop. You can easily change themes and wallpapers and there are several gtk themes, JWM themes, Icon themes and wallpapers included.

List of Mirrors
Mirrors
These are the Puppy mirrors from which you can get Slacko.
Which file to download?
In the «List of Mirrors» above choose a location that is reasonably close to your geographical location. On clicking one of those links you are presented with a number of files. Puppy is distributed in ISO image format represented by the .iso file extension. That is, it’s an image of a CDROM which can be burnt to CD or DVD. There are 2 files that have that extension. Click one and your browser will offer to download. Save it to a location on your hard drive.
There are 2 other important files for new users to consider. These are the .md5.txt files which open in the browser revealing a long string of code. This is the «checksum» which is a digital signature. When you download the file and it is complete it is recommended to test the checksum. In Linux this is done by the commandline with the command md5sum.
which is exactly what the slacko-6.3.2-uefi.iso.md5.txt file contains. If there is not a match you will need to redownload the iso file. Be sure you have the correct md5.txt for your particular iso file. There are 3rd party tools available for Windows that perform the same action in a GUI. I recommend WinMD5free, which is of course freeware.
Once you have the iso image you can either burn it to a CD/DVD or transfer it to an USB stick so that you can boot your computer. In Linux any of the many CD/DVD burning tools will do but make sure you burn it as an image.. not data! For windows we recommend Imageburn (direct link). To transfer to a USB stick you need to use the Linux dd utility. Please search the web and read the manual for dd as if it is used carelessly, data loss can occur.

Read the full changelog
Puppy Linux «Slacko» edition is an open source Linux distribution based on the avant-garde Slackware Linux operating system. It provides users with a minimalistic computing environment suitable for low-end machines and computers with old hardware components.
Distributed as Live CDs for PAE and non-PAE systems
It is distributed as two Live CD ISO images, one that supports the 32-bit PAE (Physical Address Extension) specification, and another one tailored for non-PAE x86 hardware platforms. Keep in mind that this distro is not suitable for 64-bit architectures.
Boot options
There is no boot menu on this edition of Puppy Linux and it has been designed to automatically boot the live environment in 5 seconds. However, experienced users can press the F3 key before the medium boots to access advanced help menu and set up specific boot options. On the other hand, novices should press the F2 key to access a basic help screen.
The live session will load in about 2 minutes on a low-end computer, and it will present users with a quick setup screen that allows them to configure the screen resolution, network interfaces, hostname, firewall, system language, hardware clock, as well as keyboard layout and num lock.
Simple and user-friendly desktop environment
The desktop is quite simple, providing users with a single taskbar on the bottom edge of the screen, from where they can access the main menu and launch applications, interact with the system tray area, switch between virtual workstations, and manage active applications.
Default applications include the Sylpheed email client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Transmission torrent downloader, Pwsget download manager, gFTP FTP client, XChat IRC client, mtPaint image editor, Viewnior image viewer, InkLite vector editor, and ROX-Filer file manager.
Bottom line
Overall, Puppy Linux “Slacko” proved to be a very fast and optimized Linux operating system. We strongly recommend it to all of you who want to revive an old computer or laptop and don’t want to spend any money during the process.

Yes, but what does it look and feel like?
First thing first
Puppy Linux is not a single Linux distribution like Debian. Puppy Linux is also not a Linux distribution with multiple flavours, like Ubuntu (with its variants of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc) though it also comes in flavours.
Puppy Linux is a collection of multiple Linux distributions, built on the same shared principles, built using the same set of tools, built on top of a unique set of puppy specific applications and configurations and generally speaking provide consistent behaviours and features, no matter which flavours you choose.
There are generally three broad categories of Puppy Linux distributions:
official Puppy Linux distributions → maintained by Puppy Linux team, usually targeted for general purpose, and generally built using Puppy Linux system builder (called Woof-CE).
woof-built Puppy Linux distributions → developed to suit specific needs and appearances, also targeted for general purpose, and built using Puppy Linux system builder (called Woof-CE) with some additional or modified packages.
unofficial derivatives (“puplets”) → are usually remasters (or remasters of remasters), made and maintained by Puppy Linux enthusiasts, usually targeted for specific purposes.

Questions?
It has been said that the best experience of Puppy Linux is not from the software itself, but from the community that gathers around it.
