What Does The Refresh Option In Windows Actually Do?

Until a few days ago, I, being a loyal Windows user from the time when I got hands-on my first desktop machine, believed that the Refresh option in Windows clears the system memory, making it clutter-free. But all my beliefs turned out to be false when I finally dug through the internet for the actual task performed by the Refresh option in Windows.

Windows Refresh Option – What’s the purpose?

What actually happens is that Windows has an auto-refresh feature inbuilt by Microsoft, which enables the screen to display the changes made to a folder–even desktop is just a folder for your operating system–either by you or a third-party application or if you want to re-align the folders on your desktop.

Sometimes, the auto-refresh option fails to display the change on your screen. So, you have to manually do it yourself by clicking the Refresh button in the context menu. I would like to tell you that no miracle happens when you click the refresh button. It won’t make any changes in the performance. Your Windows machine won’t transform into a supercomputer.

Most people, including me, have developed a habit of constantly refreshing Windows for no reason. I have shifted to Ubuntu recently, and I find myself searching for the Refresh option in the context menu, but it is nowhere to be seen because most Linux-based operating systems don’t have it. However, one can install tools like xautomation to get the same effect.

One thing to note is that you shouldn’t confuse it with the Refresh feature that appeared in earlier versions of Windows 10. The feature allowed users to reset their PC without deleting data.

Anyway, it seems like a daily ritual for most of us; our hands involuntarily keep pressing the F5. And some of us even overcome our laziness and refresh windows using a mouse, which is a tiresome job, though. So, try to get rid of this bad habit.

Talking technically, all the stuff you see on your desktop is a static frame. Let’s take an example of a movie — In earlier times we went to cinema theatres which used camera reels to project the movie on a white screen. Each reel had many images arranged in an order, and they were projected on the screen at a specific rate, i.e., 24 images/frames per second. You might’ve heard about the term FPS (frames per second); it’s the same thing. The human eye can’t distinguish if the FPS is 24 or above.

In current times, the same process is followed, but the photos are now saved in a digitally compressed file which is given an extension like MP4 or MKV. It makes the video portable, and we can open it on our computer.

So, consider a frame generated by your OS as an image. Frames are displayed on your screen one after the other giving you a feeling that everything is continuous. Each frame comprises of different UI (User Interface) components like background, icons, and their names. When each frame is constructed, all the components are placed on it, like first the background, then the icons and their names. The taskbar acts as a layer that is placed on top of the background.

If each component had to be placed in every succeeding frame, it would be a tiresome job for the hardware. So, to reduce the burden on the hardware, an optimization technique has been deduced in which only the components which are needed to be changed are marked as dirty and then recreated in the next frame. This reduces the load on the CPU.

The refresh option marks all the components of the screen as dirty, and the whole screen is recreated in the next frame and displayed on your monitor. That’s the prime job of the Refresh option in Windows.

So, feel free to press the F5 button the next time. But do decide whether you need it or not. Anyways, it’s your machine, and the Refresh option is free–press it as many times you want.

How do I refresh my desktop in Windows 10?

On Windows 10 and older versions, you can refresh your desktop by right-clicking anywhere in the empty space on the desktop. Next, select the third option from the context menu. Alternatively, as mentioned above, you can also press the F5 key to use the refresh option.

Refresh

A refresh may refer to any of the following:

1. In general, refresh is another way of describing reloading or updating what is being displayed or stored. For example, if you were on a web page, refreshing the page would bring up the most recent content published on that page. Essentially, you’re asking the site to send your computer the newest version of the page you’re viewing.

2. The refresh button, also known as refresh option, is a function of all Internet browsers. It is used to ask the browser to send you the most updated version of the page you’re viewing. See the browser page for additional information about this term and related links.

On a Windows-based computer, pressing the F5 function key or Ctrl + R refreshes a web page on all browsers. Sometimes, this is referred to as refresh key or key combination on the keyboard. In most browsers, there is a refresh icon that is an arrow that forms a circle. It is usually located to the left of the address bar.

Pressing the F5 function key can refresh the Windows desktop screen.

On a Mac, pressing Command + R refreshes the page you are currently viewing.

On a Chromebook, pressing Ctrl + R refreshes the page you are currently viewing. There is also a dedicated refresh button on the top row of keys on every Chromebook. It looks like a circular arrow, similar to the icon in an Internet browser.

What is a «force reload» or «hard refresh»?

There are some situations where a refresh does not refresh everything on a web page. In this situation, you can perform a force reload or hard refresh by pressing Ctrl + F5 .

What if refresh still doesn’t work after doing the above steps?

If refresh is still not loading the latest version of a web page, you might be viewing a remotely cached version of the site. For example, CDN services cache static content such as images and even sometimes web pages. It is also possible that a network proxy or your ISP is caching all or part of a web page. If refreshing the page is not loading the latest version of a web page, try the following steps.

  • How do I clear my Internet browser history?
  • See if the same web page loads properly in a different browser.
  • Try resetting the router by unplugging the power waiting a few seconds, and then plugging the power back into the router.
  • If you’re designing a web page or service and use a CDN, make sure to clear any CDN cache.
  • Finally, if you continue to have problems, contact the ISP to make sure the problem is not on their end.

3. Refresh is a term that describes renewing the screen contents on a CRT monitor. As the refresh rate increases, the image becomes clearer.

We recommended that anyone who still uses a CRT monitor to have it set to at least a 75 MHz refresh rate. Lower refresh rates commonly cause strain on the eyes. If you have a flat-panel display, you do not need to worry about the refresh rate.

4. When referring to computer memory, refresh is the recharging of DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips that allow them to keep holding the data they are currently storing. Memory refresh rate is commonly displayed as xK, where x is a number such as 2 or 4. If the memory has a refresh rate of 2k, it indicates how many rows it takes to complete the refresh. In our example of 2k, this means there are 2 thousand rows. The refresh cycle is a way of showing the time it requires to complete one row.

5. Refresh may also refer to a software utility developed to help improve the performance of how memory is handled on a computer.

6. When referring to a computer battery, refresh is an ability that allows NiCad batteries to reset the memory that stores their charge state.

7. Refresh may be used when describing erasing and reinstalling all of the software on a computer to make it like new.

Use onClick with window.location.reload() , i.e. :

Or history.go(0) , i.e.:

Or window.location.href=window.location.href for ‘full‘ reload, i.e.:

This works for me:

This really works perfect for me.

Only this realy reloads page (Today)

Others do not exactly reload. They keep values inside text boxes.

This might look funny but it really does the trick.

button that refresh the page on click

Use onClick button with window.location.reload():

I noticed that all the answers here use inline onClick handlers. It’s generally recommended to keep HTML and Javascript separate.

Here’s an answer that adds a click event listener directly to the button. When it’s clicked, it calls location.reload which causes the page to reload with the current URL.

just create the empty reference on link such as following

Or you can also use

Note: Change » » with the url of same page you want to reload. for example:
