32 or 64 Bit Version of Internet Explorer

I just recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 and so far so good.

As part of that I got Internet Explorer 11; it’s version number is 11.0.9600.1634

The same version is in both Program files, which I thought was for 64-bit programs and Program files (x86). which I thought was for 32 bit. I have searched the web and all things I get says that it should say what it is when you click on About Internet Explorer. When I do so, all I get is the version number and (see above) a Product ID.

In IE 11, 32-bit program files are in the x86 directory, and 64-bit program files are in the normal program files directory. Starting with IE 10, on 64-bit system, both run simultaneously: a 64-bit host process and isolated 32-bit tabs with better security, regardless of which version of the program you run directly.

note that I have only used a beta version of IE 11, not the final release of it, so I will tell you what I know:

If you want 64-bit tabs on IE 10 you can simply enabled enhanced protected mode. on IE 11, you must enable a separate option labeled «enable 64-bit processes for enhanced protected mode». These options can be found under tools>internet options>advanced>security>

To our disappointment, task manager sometimes will not tell us if a process is 32-bit. If nessecary, you can instead use Sysinternals’ process explorer. Once you save it, you may want to make this modification to it:

Right-click the column headers at the top and select «select columns». Check «Image type (64 vs 32-bit)». You can also change this option at view>columns. Now you can keep a look out for whether IE is 32 or 64. I would also like to clear something else up that may be confusing: notice that some «iexplore.exe»s seems to be listed underneath an «iexplore.exe». These are typically known as child processes; processes started by another process. This way, you can differentiate between the tabs and windows.

Please note that process explorer is for advanced users, and I do not recommend using it beyond these directions.

Optional: I would like feedback as to how often IE uses 64-bit tabs. I had difficulty with it in the preview, and I want to know if the issue I’m referring to has been fixed.

It seems that it uses both, at least according to Process Explorer. I don’t know how to tell any more.

I am interested because my company uses Citrix receiver and all I get with IE 11 is a black screen.

But that’s a separate issue. Citrix says I have to use the 32 bit version, but if both are running, I’m lost. This is from Windows 8.1 with latest updates as of 1-6-2014.

After I posted that reply, I discovered the same thing using Process Explorer.

I was resistant to install IE 11 on my real Win7 computer. When I finally tried it, I found out that, at least on Windows 7, it works exactly the same as it does on IE 10. I later found out that the Windows 7 version of IE 11 is free of other bugs as well, some of which people say still persist in the final release of IE 11 on 8.1.

I found this all very frustrating. Why wouldn’t I want to know what mode this hybrid browser is operating in 32-bit or 64-bit mode

I honestly do not know what the IE 11 developers were thinking. Of course I want to know if its operating in 32-bit mode or 64-bit mode. I might want to test my JRE 64-bit runtime environment or my 32-bit versions separately. How do I do that ? By looking at system Internals?
Why not display a label when you are in one versus another mode!!

I also am trying to figure out what version of IE11 I have (32or 64bit)? My «about IE» is exactly as printed above. By all I read, because it does not explicitly say «64bit», I should be running 32bit. However, in all that I read, my program is listed with my 64bit programs and NOT under the (x86) program listing. So under this concept, I am running IE11 as 64bit. For reference, I am on win7 64bit operating system.

Ever since installing IE11, I have had various issue with it working properly. One of the things I was trying to check was my JAVA version. By default they download a 32bit, but I came across the fact that they also have a 64bit version. I am running the 32bit and if I should be on 64bit, then this could account for some of my IE issues. But I don’t want to download the 64bit unless I am sure I am running the browser in 64bit.

If you go to Microsoft download center, it does not make any distinction between 32 or 64. Just has a download button to click on and it begins its process. Then if you go to a more extensive download page, there is a link for downloading IE11 and then I saw another link that specifically said IE11 64bit. My update to IE11 was done thru windows update and it was listed as priority to update. So I did the update but like I said, I don’t know what versions I actually have for sure.

In reading the other above material, I don’t know if I need to put a check mark in the Enhance Protect Mode to get 64bit or not. I don’t understand what the comments above are trying to say.

So I am looking for some help to clarify my questions based upon my comments above:

1. Am I running IE as 32bit or 64 bit?

2. In my reading, I get the impression that IE 11 runs both 32 and 64bit ( I don’t understand how? but)

but think I’m supposed to have the Enhance Protect mode checked. Is this correct??

3. Should I download the 64bit version of Java?

I really need some help on this as I cannot get a specific answer anywhere as to what I actually am running. My 1st paragraph details all the readings I’ve done and what I basically understand vs what my «about IE11» actually shows.

Can someone please help and clarify this for me.
